Really Hacked Off At Kinnikinnick Foods.

To all who may have noticed, Kinnikinnick Foods has just reformulated their personal 7" pizza crusts into a square shape. That is hardly a big deal. I could even deal with the fact that they thinned out the crust big time, and charged the same amount of money for only 4 crusts. The big deal was when I wolfed it down and then realized upon looking at the packaging that they have QUADRUPLED the amount of calories in one crust. 496 calories, to be exact. I sorely wished I hadn't eaten it. After sauce and cheese, it weighed in at over 600 calories.

The old round crust was nice and thick, came in a package of five, and was a reasonable 123 calories per crust. WHY OH WHY DID THEY CHANGE IT?!?!?! I know they have a new dedicated facility and had to adapt the new crust to the new machines, but did they really have to change the recipe THAT MUCH?

This gluten-free thing is hard enough without trying to maintain a clothing size in the low single digits. So many of the gluten free breads, rolls, etc. are incredibly high in calories, and most of the time I try to avoid them. But if I am going to waste 600 calories on a gluten free pizza, it is going to be from the pizzeria in town that makes it sinfully good and not on some crappy frozen crust.

I am getting really tired of this. :angry:

Oh, I did call. Left two messages. Never heard anything. :rolleyes:

And--get this---a "serving size" is 248 calories. HALF of a personal-sized pizza. Who is just going to eat ONE HALF of a tiny pizza? "Gee, I'm FULL!" Sorry, don't think so.

The last package I had of the round Kinnikinnick crusts had 280 calories per crust. I believe they came 4 or so crusts to a package and the serving size was for 8 servings in a package, which would be half of a crust.

ETA: Sorry, the serving size is for 70 calories per 1 slice, 16 slices in a package, which would make each crust 280 calories.

If you have that big of a problem with their product, simply don't buy it. And if you cannot control how many calories you are consuming that is your own fault. Other companies besdies kinnikinnick do sell gluten-free Pizza Crusts.

Dude! It's a rant! Chill!

Sure you can buy pizza crusts elsewhere, the point is that these have gotten more caloric, which wasn't very nice.

Dealing with all of this can be incredibly frustrating, I sympathize.

Here's my remedy when all the frustrations get too much, I rent a movie that is real tear jerker and have a good cry.

By the way, many people have problems with Kinnikinnik, perhaps this is a hidden blessing. :)

Well my point was that they haven't quadrupled in calories - they haven't even doubled in calories. Not sure where the OP was getting the calorie information on the 7" round crusts because it isn't accurate.

123 calories per crust is way too good to believe.

WOW....that was extremely rude! Actually, I do a very good job of controlling how many calories I consume; it is the reason I wear size 2 jeans, and why I will NEVER be buying these pizza crusts again. Good grief. Can't a person rant on these forums? You should think more carefully about what you post before you hit "send".

To the person who had the calorie information on the old crusts, I checked my package and I think the label is wrong. It still says "123 calories" for one serving, which equaled one crust. I kind of thought it would be too good to be true as well, but I figured the package was correct. I went back to the store this week and they still had the old crusts, but they had new labels with the information you quoted plastered on to the old label. It must have been a typo. AGH!

Still, 280 calories for one crust was still a pretty good deal. ;)

What other brands do people recommend that are tasty and not 500 calories a crust? I'd love to have my Saturday night splurge back! Thanks!! :)

The Kinny pizzas are not really all that out of line with the calorie counts of regular pizza. Here is a link to the calorie counts of gluten pizzas. If you like their crusts there is no reason not to splurge occasionally if you did on gluten pizza before.

Also the old crusts were 123 calories per serving with each crust having four servings.

The way I look at it, pizza isn't really a diet friendly food. If I were on a calorie restricted diet, I wouldn't eat it, period.

I use the Ener-G rice crusts. The personal size. We don't eat them very often.

But the 123 calories before was definitely not 'per crust', but 'per serving', which no doubt is smaller than one of those crusts. also, I haven't tried the new crusts (again, because they're just so damn expensive, and I usually just use one then the rest get all moldy and crumbly in my fridge), but they definitely appear to be bigger than the original round ones. maybe just eat half? 600 calories is absolutely a reflection of it being more than one serving of bread. Or make your own. I use namaste mix, divide it into portions and stretch it super thin so I can taste the toppings rather than the dry bready gluten free crust action going on.

Kari, You should store them in the freezer and keep them frozen until you are ready to use them. I like to have pizza maybe once a week and while they are pricey I figure 8 bucks comes out to $2 a crust so even with the toppings it's still cheaper than takeout pizza. I usually freeze the leftover pizza sauce in a plastic bag so that it is very thin and I can just break a bit off for my pizza and not have to buy a new thing of sauce for each pizza.

First of all, it's "Add Reply."

Second of all calm down, I was just stating the facts. And as already shown, two slices of regular pizza is roughly 500 - 600 calories. So it's not that much of a difference. Pizza is already known to be very high in calories.

WOW! You thought that was a rude statement?!?!? :huh: I realize you were in a rant but when you put your rant out in a public place, expect some feed back!

I used to be a size 2...when I was malnourished and wasting away from celiac disease. Now I am a "fat" size 4-6, which is much healthier for my 5'4" frame. I also do not worry about the weight gain, as it was needed, and maintain my present size by NOT BUYING fatty, high calorie food. I think you will find that most frozen pizza's are not exactly calorie wise foods anyway. It's perfectly OK to eat them once in a while and that calorie count shouldn't upset anyone eating them once in a while either. I tend to not buy them 90% of the time because they are nutrient empty foods or just not good enough, taste-wise, to waste my money on.

Gemini, please tell me your being sarcastic about the "fat" size 4-6. That is not fat. I am sure your aware. :D

These comments even in jest bother me because I see our young children in our society going to extremes and delevoping eating disorders because of statements like that. People have a tendancy to believe that size is everything and nothing else matters. As long as your healthy and take care of your body the number on your clothing does not define who you are nor what you do.

Schar makes a delicious gluten free pizza crust that is sold on the grocers shelf and not frozen (in boxes of two crusts sealed in airtight plastic wrapping). It is the best I've tried, similiar to the frozen Kini crust but a bit thicker and not crumbly at all.

It shows 130 calories and 3 servings per crust, so that makes 390 calories in one pizza before toppings. Honestly, not that bad considering how filling it is and if you're only indulging once a week or so.

I use Open Original Shared Link recipe (although I split the 2/3 c. sorghum flour into 1/3 c. brown rice and 1/3 c. sorghum) and spread it super thin.

It's still not super low-calorie, but it IS good and you could halve the recipe to make a smaller pie and lower the calories further.

      There are two gluten-related disorders that share many of the same symptoms but differ in nature from each other. One is known as celiac disease or "gluten intolerance". By nature, it is an autoimmune disorder, meaning the ingestion of gluten triggers the body to attack it's own tissues, specifically the lining of the small bowel. This attack causes inflammation and produces antibodies that can be detected in the blood by specific tests like the TTG-IGA test you had. Over time, if gluten is not withheld, this inflammation can cause severe damage to the lining of the small bowel and even result in nutrient deficiency related health issues since the small bowel lining is organ where all the nutrition found in our food is absorbed.  The other is NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity or just "gluten sensitivity") which we know less about and are unsure of the exact mechanism of action. It is not an autoimmune disorder and unlike celiac disease it does not damage the lining of the small bowel, though, like celiac disease, it can cause GI distress and it can also do other kinds of damage to the body. It is thought to be more common than celiac disease. Currently, we cannot test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out to arrive at a diagnosis of NCGS. Both disorders require elimination of gluten from the diet.  Either of these disorders can find their onset at any stage of life. We know that celiac disease has a genetic component but the genes are inactive until awakened by some stress event. About 40% of the general population has the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% develop active celiac disease. The incidence of NCGS is thought to be considerably higher.       I have always eaten gluten and never stopped until my recent episode. I started more wheat products as my Dr. requested for the Tissue Transglutaminase Iga Antibody. mye result Value <1.0 Value interpretation: <15.0 Antibody not detected > or =15.0 Antibody detected I do not understand any of it. After eating all that wheat product my body exploded with all sorts of symptoms. I stop gluten ASAP. I am still in the healing process. I started having issues after my surgery.

      Welcome to the celic.com community @Ello! You say you had a blood test for celiac disease after eating gluten for 2 weeks. Were you gluten free before that? Had you ever been officially diagnosed with celiac disease previously? You say the result of the blood test was 1.5. Can you provide the name of the test and the reference range for negative vs. positive for the test? I ask because different labs used different reference ranges so scores without a reference range aren't very helpful.

      Surgery was in April 2023 due adhesions wrapped around my small bowel which caused blockage and had to be removed. Adhesions were so badly entangled that Surgeon could not cut out them, so the resection was performed. July 2025 started having severe yellow diarrhea and sometimes constipation. Just had another episode and was tested for celiac. Blood test stated 1.5 after eating gluten for 2 weeks. Lipase level was 120. Having an CT scan to check the pancreas. I have never had any issues eating gluten and now I am so fearful that I might have celiac. Has anyone had a small bowel resection? I am 65 years old. UGGH! I am still feeling bloating etc.
