Use "Low Gluten" Communion Wafers

Well, I did communion today with a new "low gluten" host...and the worse side effect I had was a little upset stomach which could possibly be psychosomatic. Anyway, it was different from the ones I HAD been using by EnerG in that 1)it was 0.01% wheat, and it was actually "legal" by Canonical Law.

I haven't really got much of a choice so I'll keep an eye on my belly the next few days. Hopefully no ill effects, I am loving being able to go back to church and feed my spirit without getting sick after. Also, they had doughnuts in sunday school and they didn't give my sons class any because of my allergy- they wanted to make sure it was ok to give HIM some! I really felt blessed to have someone understand and want to be sure not to cc me (oh yeah, and he DID get his doughnut :) )

Sounds like you have a great parish! Good to know about the low-gluten hosts. Like I mentioned in the other thread, I'm fortunate enough to be at a parish that consecrates enough wine for everyone, but in future I can't expect that at other parishes.

That was my communion post (thanks for all the responses btw). I just was going to update that it was a Big Mistake to try communion. I was pretty sick and anxious for about 3 days...3 days I could not afford out of my week. We are in the process of getting a new pastor so I'll just hang out and see if we can come up with a new system when he/she signs on. In the meantime, I personally don't feel spiritually left out for not taking communion. It's just a little awkward refusing it and I hate explaining to people why I don't take it. ("It's just a little bit...it shouldn't hurt you." This from my Dr. Sister in Law this weekend. She still thinks if I'm not diagnosed celiacs then I should be able to re-introduce wheat. *sigh*).

I'm glad you found an alternative. Hopefully the upset stomach was all in your head. And I mean that in the nicest possible way. Hopefully that's not coming across as condescending at all.

srall, I hadn't realized how much more difficult it would be in a Protestant church until I attended my husband's uncle's memorial service (Congregational-UCC). I wasn't planning to receive communion there anyway, but if I'd wanted to I couldn't have since all of it was done by intinction. There wasn't any option to simply sip non-CCed wine. At least in my Catholic parish only the priest's chalice has a piece of the bread placed in it. The chalices given to the parishoners are just consecrated wine.

Since you're not restricted by Canon Law (as we Catholics are)to use bread made from wheat, could you bring rice wafers and have them blessed on a separate plate and then just not dip them in wine?

I DID bloat up last night...I looked about 5 months pregnant (and I am very thin so it was a shock). But I feel ok this morning and the bloat is gone. I will try it again next week just to check it out again. It makes me SO nervous that I ate something that SAID "Ingredients: Wheat starch, water". Augh.

Many Protestant pastors will find a way to work with you if you are a church member. We have an extra church service at 8 o'clock in the morning - it is very small - only a dozen or so people usually show up, and we have only gluten-free bread at that service. I love my pastor :) I believe they also make gluten free available to a celiac choir member at the main service.

He is not just a psychiatrist.  He is also a neuroscientist.  And yes, I have already read those studies.   I agree with benfotiamine.  This is short term while glutened/inflammation occurs.  As I had already mentioned, these symptoms no longer exist when this phase passes.  And yes, I know that celiac is a disease of malnutrition.  We are working with a naturopath.

Please do more research before you settle on nicotine. Dr. Paul New house is a psychiatrist.  His latest study involves the effect of nicotine patches on Late Life Depression which has reached no long term conclusions about the benefits.   Effects of open-label transdermal nicotine antidepressant augmentation on affective symptoms and executive function in late-life depression https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39009312/   I'm approaching the subject from the Microbiologist's point of view which shows nicotine blocks Thiamine B1 uptake and usage:   Chronic Nicotine Exposure In Vivo and In Vitro Inhibits Vitamin B1 (Thiamin) Uptake by Pancreatic Acinar Cells https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26633299/   While supplementation with thiamine in the form Benfotiamine can protect from damage done by  nicotine: Benfotiamine attenuates nicotine and uric acid-induced vascular endothelial dysfunction in the rat https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18951979/   I suggest you study the beneficial effects of Thiamine (Benfotiamine and TTFD) on the body and mental health done by Dr. Derrick Lonsdale and Dr. Chandler Marrs.  Dr. Lonsdale had studied thiamine over fifty years.   Hiding in Plain Sight: Modern Thiamine Deficiency https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8533683/ I suggest you read their book Thiamine Deficiency Disease, Dysautonomia, and High Calorie Malnutrition.     Celiac Disease is a disease of malabsorption causing malnutrition.  Thiamine and benfotiamine: Focus on their therapeutic potential https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10682628/

Thanks for your response.  Everything you mentioned he is and has been doing.  Tobacco is not the same as nicotine.  Nicotine, in the form of a patch, does not cause gastrointestinal irritation.  Smoking does. He is not smoking.  Please do your research before stating false information. Dr. Paul Newhouse has been doing research on nicotine the last 40 years at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Im so frustrated and still getting the run around trying to reprove my celiac disease which my past primary ignored for 25 years.I understand that theres a ray of medical that doctors are limited too but not listening and telling the patient ( me) that im not as sensitive as I think and NOT celiac!Correction Mr white coat its not what I think but for cause and affect and past test that are not sticking in my medical records.I get sick violently with foods consumed, not eating the foods will show Im fabulous. After many blood draws and going through doctors I have the HLA- DQ2 positive which I read in a study that Iran conducted that the severity in celiac is in that gene.Im glutenfree and dealing with related issues which core issue of celiac isn't addressed. My skin, right eye, left leg diagestive issues affected. I have high blood pressure because im in pain.Im waisting my time on trying to reprove that Im celiac which is not a disease I want, but unfortunately have. It  has taken over my life personally and professionally. How do I stop getting medically gaslight and get the help needed to bounce back if I ever do bounce back to normal? I thought I was in good care with " celiac specialist " but in her eyes Im good.Im NOT.Sibo positive, IBS, Chronic Fatigue just to name a few and its all related to what I like to call a ghost disease ( celiac) since doctors don't seem to take it seriously.

@Martha Mitchell, your reaction to the lens implant with gluten sounds like it could be an allergic reaction rather than a celiac reaction. It is possible for a celiac to be also allergic to gluten as it is a protein component in wheat, barley and rye.
