I will be staying in Vancouver, BC from August 23-31 in the Oceanside Hotel on English Bay a couple blocks from Stanley Park. Can anyone tell me where in the downtown and Stanley Park area I can find restaurant personnel who speak celiac?? I'm also casein and soy intolerant, but don't like spicey food. So I usually go to steakhouses and order simply grilled meats and vegies or Mexican restaurants. I'm scared of oriental restaurants (except PF Chang's) because of the soy. Any ideas from anyone in the Vancouver area or anyone who had a successful gluten free vacation in Vancouver??

Since we're driving, we can take many gluten-free/df/sf supplies, but I may need to restock while there. SO where are there good suppliers of gluten-free foods in the Vancouver area?

WOW!! THANKS A HEAP, KAREN!!

We're staying in the Oceanside Hotel 2 blocks from Stanley Park on English Bay. Which of those restaurants are in the Stanley Park area? Of course we'll travel all over Vancouver and can try the others, but we might want one close to our hotel the first night. Also WHERE is the Whole Foods? I really depend on the Whole Foods in Seattle, so I'm thrilled to hear Vancouver has a Whole Foods. Are any of the other shops you mentioned in the Stanley Park area or nearby Robsonstrasse area? Is there a Vancouver area celiac support group phone number or website which I could contact for info while I'm there or before I leave? Thanks again.

You are very welcome for the help I love helping other Celiacs if I can. I also had good luck at Moxies (Open Original Shared Link) restaurant just recently there are a couple in Vancouver here is one that might be close to where you would be 808 bute street. The manager and chef came to my table to help me order I had a great meal including dessert. Also red robin worked for me here is one 803 Thurlow Street. The Whole Foods is in The Park Royal Shopping Ctr Village at Park Royal 925 Main Street West Vancouver. There is a Capers on Robson at 1675 Robson Street. There is a Choices Market at 1202 Richards Street. The Vancouver Chapter of the Canadian Celiac Association's website is at Open Original Shared Link it is in the process of being updated but if you email them with any questions they will help you out with your stay in Vancouver.

Thanks again, Karen.

Red Robin?? I would never imagine I could get a gluten, dairy, soy free meal there!! My husband would be sooo pleased ... OOPS! He's also committed to avoid gluten (which relieved his arthritis symptoms though he's never been tested for celiac disease) just to eliminate kitchen cross contamination. I'm not sure he could resist a burger and those great RR onion rings. What did you order at Red Robin?

I'll check out that website and locate all your suggestions on my Vancouver map.

there is a new awesome Gluten Free Cafe & Bakery on the North Shore! (close to the sea bus on North Vancouver side) It's called Mountain Top Cafe & Bakery, at #103-1124 Lonsdale, North Van, ( beside the NS Credit Union). They have everything- muffins, breads, buns, pastries, pies, paninis, pizza even sausage rolls. Their phone number is 604-960-9605. I usually phone them to place my order and get 10% discount on pre-order.

Thanks, Jane. I'll add that to my list of great recommendations! I also contacted the Canadian Celiac Association, Vancouver branch and someone there gave me a huge list of restaurants, locations and contact numbers. I noticed that most of the restaurants seem to be breakfast and lunch spots (muffins, sandwiches). We usually eat breakfasts and lunches from purchased 'picnic' foods during tourist activities, to save time and money, but those recommendations give us more lunch choices. With my additional dairy and soy intolerances, finding a safe dinner type restaurant will be challenging, but I have a long list of restaurants to choose from. Unfortunately we decided to postpone our vacation, due to too many previous commitments we would miss or need to reschedule. However, a close friend lives in the Vancouver area, so we'll be there soon enough. Thanks again to everyone who posted recommendations!

Just to add, I was recently in Victoria and had a great experience with the restaurant Re-Bar. The staff were very helpful and double checked everything for me. I highly recommend it if in the area.

Hello everyone. I am Elena and am 38 years old. I suspect I have a gluten intolerance even if my celiac panel is ok. I have the following symptoms : facial flushing, Red dots not bumps în face, bloating abdominal distension, hair loss, depression anxiety even with meds and even bipolar. Fatigue extreme to the point of not being able to work. All of these after I eat gluten. Could I have non celiac gluten sensitivity? Thanks anyone else with these symptoms?

Hi Everyone,  I do appreciate your replies to my original post.   Here is where I am now in this journey.  I am currently seeing a Naturopath.  One thing I did not post before is that I take Esomeprazole for GERD.  My Naturopath believes that the decrease in the gastric acid has allowed the yeast to grow.    She has put me on some digestive enzymes.  She also put me on Zinc, Selenium, B 12, as she felt that I was not absorbing my vitamins. I am about 5 weeks into this treatment, and I am feeling better. I did not have any trouble taking the Fluconazole.

I'm sure it's chemically perfect. Most of them taste lousy!

Hi @JulieRe.  I just found your post.  It seems that I am also experiencing thrush, and my doctor believes that I have fungal overgrowth in my gut, which is most likely candida.  I'm seeing my GI doctor next week, so I'm hoping she can diagnose and confirm this and then give me an antifungal treatment.  In the meantime, I have been working with a functional medicine doctor, doing a candida cleanse and taking vitamins. It's already helping to make me feel better (with some ups and downs, of course), so I do think the yeast is definitely a problem for me on top of my celiac disease and I'm hoping my GI doctor can look into this a bit further.  So, how about you?  Did the candida come back, or is it still gone following your fluconazole treatment?  Also, was it awful to take fluconazole?  I understand that taking an antifungal can cause a reaction that sometimes makes people feel sick while they're taking it.  I hope you're doing better still !

I'm so sorry you're going through this—the "gluten challenge" is notoriously brutal, and it's awful to deliberately make yourself sick when you've already found the answer. For the joint pain, many people find that over-the-counter anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen can help take the edge off, and using heating pads or warm baths can provide some direct relief for the aches. For the digestive misery, stick to simple, easy-to-digest foods (like plain rice, bananas, and bone broth) and drink plenty of water and electrolytes to stay hydrated. It feels like the longest month ever, but you are doing the right thing to get a clear diagnosis, which can be crucial for your long-term health and getting the proper care. Hang in there; you can get through this! This article, and the comments below it, may be helpful:
