You can soak the ener-g bread in a mixture of eggs/vanilla/cinnamon/sugar. I mean, really let those bread slices soak. Then make french toast with them. I'd imagine you could soak those shingles for a few hours in the fridge. I'm sure they wouldn't fall apart! Anyway, hate to hear someone's wasting expensive food...even if it is that crappy bread.

Excellent thread! Has helped narrow down my online shopping list for my trip to California! Was wondering how to work out which products to order I know here in Australia there are products out there that I also wouldnt feed my dog - dont know who buys them but they keep making them (or maybe they are the same ones still sitting on the shelves for months on end?).

Any recomendations on preferred online shop? Have looked at gluten free mall, gluten free pantry so far. just found another post (from Bean i think) with links to shop by diet and allergy grocery search. They look good and will also allow me to get dairy free as well as gluten free.

Hey, the ENER-G pretzels are good.  Give them a try.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Yea...they taste like regular pretzels. I was never a big pretzel person, but if you like pretzels in general, you'll like these.

BabySnooks Rookie
Hee Hee - I've had a brick of ener-g bread in the cabinet since I've been diagnosed (a month or so) - I was always afriad to open it...  I figured any bread that will last over a year can't bee too tasty...  Now I think you've convinced me to just toss it! :)

I didn't care for the Pamela's Pecan cookies - kind of a cardboardy aftertaste and dry as the Sahara.

I'm going to try making up a pizza with gluten-free dough (forget the brand) tonite for the first time...  Wish me luck... :)

Jim, try Mi-Del pecan cookies, they are quite good. I think all the breads suck, though, even the most expensive ones that others rave about. I no longer look forward to breakfast except for the coffee.

Greetings..

Ditto again on the ener-g bread. I no longer waste my $ or expectations on gluten-free breads.

Potato pasta....looked, smelled, and tasted like I cooked the box instead. Even my garbage disposal flinched!

Bad luck with cookies except for Kinikinnick...the others are either bland/dry or chewy but taste like play-dough. Don't need 'em anyway!

My staple....reece cups, sangria and chips and salsa (gee, and I wonder how I gained 60# )

Hang in there, everyone...we've got eachother!!

Hey - lisawil - where in Cali are you going to be?

We have Whole Foods stores all over here and Trader Joe's also has some good stuff. Thier gluten-free sausage is tasty! The Bay area and San Diego also have alot of health food stores that carry good gluten-free stuff. I wouldn't worry about finding food in California. I don't know about online stores yet, I'm still working my way through local chains, but the Kinnikinnick donuts I got at Whole Foods were AWESOME. I do have a case of Bart'sBeer on its way too. MMMMMMM....Beer.

This is a riot! I have to add mine.

All time worst:

1.EnerG harvest loaf- my brillo pad tastes better (not that I've been chewing on it, but when faced with a choice, I'd eat a sponge with pbj over this poop)

2. EnerG brownies- chocolate sponge at the low low price of 7. 00 (there seems to be a theme here).

3. My first experiment at making chocolate chip cookies with gluten-free flour. They didn't taste too bad but in no way resembled cookies. I have since stuck to peanut butter cookies.

Top three gluten free:

1. Chebe pizza crust- OMG. Heaven!

2. Tinkyada penne pasta - another OMG!

3. Glutino cinnamon raisin bread- Wow!

4. OK so beer isn't food but bard's tale Dragon sorghum lager. Those guys take the cake!

Top three foods that have no gluten anyway:

1. Snickers ice cream bars (yesss!)

2. Starbucks Frappucinos (I am not a big fan of supporting big corporations but mt local coffe shop's similar beverage has gluten in the mix)

3. Peanut butter!

I was sitting here eating dinner...ate a cookie for dessert...and just about barfed.

Seriously, I can't get the taste of this dam* cookie out of my mouth. <_<

It's Enjoy Life "soft baked chewy chocolate chip cookies"...OMG, yuck!

Ha ha, this is great.

What are those lemon flavored cookies that come in the black rectangular box? Yum....they taste like lemon Rolaids.

Oh well, at least I have my Breyers Ice Cream....

Lauren M Explorer

Worst:

(1) Ener-G Tapioca Bread - just plain non-edible

(2) Hol Grain Rice Crackers - looks and tastes like corrugated cardboard

(3) Notta Pasta - slimy

Favorites:

(1) Amy's gluten-free meals - they are all so good, esp. the lasagna and the mexican meals!

(2) Hol Grain brownies - the company redeemed themselves when I tried these!

(3) Arrowhead Mills pancake mix - cinnamony - my family likes it better than regular pancakes

(4) Trader Joes toaster waffles

(5) Puffins Honey Rice Cereal

(6) Mi-Del Arrowroot cookies (just like animal crackers, I swear!)

See, there are a lot more good ones than bad ones! Really I haven't found most of the gluten-free products I've tried to be THAT bad, I just miss my old favorites :(

misskris Apprentice

Thanks for the warnings guys! I was about to try some of these products, but I will save my money and stick to what I know...veggies and meat! Mmmm.

My top 3 worst pics:

1. Bobs Red Mill flours - Garbanzo bean BARF!

2. These chicken nuggets I tried from whole foods, don't know the name, but I don't even think there was chicken in there. Just some mushy corn filling?! SO gross!

3. LaChoy soy sauce - ok for cooking but OMG disgusting for sushi!

My faves:

Quinoa spaghetti with my chunky vegetable sauce! Just gotta watch those noodles - no overcooking or it's mush.

Tinkyada penne - oh how I love thee! Makes the best cold pasta salads - I made one today with mayo, green onions and cracked pepper. Even hubby liked it!

PAMELA'S BROWNIE MIX!!!!! I used this mix for my wedding cake! LOL! When I make brownies, I throw in chocolate and peanut butter chips or walnuts - whatever I have. Always SO good. Hubby begs me to make these - and he's not gluten-free.

Also Pamela's Baking Mix - makes great biscuits and pie crusts. Even worked for dumpings in chicken broth. A little pricey tho. It's a once-in-awhile thing since we're on a budget.

Other naturally gluten-free things that I love:

Soups and stir frys - I make a lot (We're big veggie people)

Dried beans (lotsa protein - works well on a budget)

Squash "pasta" - I bought a spiral slicer and it makes the squash, zucchini, etc come out in "noodles" I steam for about a minute and toss with butter and fresh grated parmesan cheese. YUM!

jimbo Newbie

I did that!! It was actually really good - now at least I have something to use it for besides a doorstop! (I tried toasting it with lots of buitter & jelly & was still horrible.

BTW, my gluten-free-pizza crust ended up in the garbage! (after I picked off the topings, of course)

Well going gluten-free was pretty hard and I've only found a few things that I really like.

Here are the ones I can not choke down:

1. I know many people disagree but I do not like any of AMY's things. They all seemed mushy and tasteless.

2. Nana's cookies are disgusting!

3. I am not a big fan of Mrs. Leepers mixes- all of the gluten-free boxed mixes I have tried have been awful.

I love Tinkyada pastas, and Kinninnick breads and Envirokids products.

Also, natural peanut butter (chunky) MMMM.

Which whole foods did you get the kinnik stuff? My first stop will be whole foods and trader joes in san francisco and pleasanton. Later in the trip i know of whole foods in san diego, wild oats and henrys marketplace in fullerton, la and las vegas. After reading the recomendations of the kinnik bread and donuts i want to get some but am wondering if online is the best way (i can have it delivered to my cousin in Livermore at the beginning of our trip) however with travelling around for 4 weeks, i will need more during the trip and wont be able to keep it frozen. Any further suggestions would be great. Many thanks

I think all Whole Foods have some Kinnickinnick products. They are in a frozen food section. You can also order from Kinnickinnick.com, but shipping is $10 so I order lots at one time. There are many WHole Foods stores in California, but we don't have the fresh bakery stuff that they have on the East Coast, yet.

pixiegirl Enthusiast

Our Whole Foods in Hingham, MA has all the fresh baked goods, so do the ones in the Boston area and they have had them for months. However they are often sold out or close to sold out but if you ask at the bakery they will go in the back and get them (they usually have extra in back).

Am I the only moron that tried what Whole Foods considered bread. The praire bread is by far the most disgusting thing I've ever eaten in my life.

And then ofcourse there was the Amy's frozen mac n' cheese. YUCK!! (however I agree the cheese enchiladas are pretty good).

I've tried several bars and have yet to find one I like, but the Larabar by far was the worst. I couldn't even swallow the one bite I took.

ruddabega Apprentice

I haven't ventured far into the gluten-free packaged foods world... I'm scared! I mostly cook at home for myself.

It sounds like Ener-G bread is horrid, but I like my rice bread... it's sweet! Maybe that's just me. I eat "Food For Life" bread. Brown Rice, Almond and Fruit, and Pecan and Fruit are all excellent (I think.)

Worst thing I've had so far.... That's easy!

I was diagnosed a month before my 17th birthday. My mom decided to cook me a nice gluten-free chocolate birthday cake, our first venture into the gluten-free baked-goods world. It tasted like a just-cleaned hospital room! It was horrid!!!!! I ate the frosting though. :)

elonwy Enthusiast

I had my second major YUCK today. The first was trying to make Buscuits from Arrowhead Mills gluten-free Baking mix. It was like eating sand.

Today I tried to make DeBoles Rice Shells & Cheddar. It started out well, I've been having good luck with Rice pasta, but then I noticed some of the shells would NOT come off my stirring spoon. I drained , then returned and tried to open the cheese packet. This chunky block of white stuff thunked out. I figure its been on the shelf for a while. So I start stirring. And stirring. And stirring. And then I start smooshing and whacking. Nothings making the chunks go away. Then I think : before I put any more effort into it, I should taste it and see if its edible. bleeeech.

I don't know what they put in the sauce, but its not cheese.

I dump it and the pasta won't come off my pot!

I had to use a sponge to get it off my sponge!

The wierd thing is - I like thier Rice spaghetti - it came out yummy.

Anyway, I'm going to eat some Amy's enchiladas now, cause I love Amy's stuff. Especially the brown rice teriyaki bowl. Yum

I also like PAmelas Pecan shortbread from Whole foods, but i like crumbly cookies, so they work for me.

The rice bread I bought ( it in ziploc now I forget the name) freaked me out at first but if its toasted its really yummy, so I just toast all my bread now.

Kinnikinick donuts, mmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I have more than three:

1. Low Carb Flour Wraps by Don Pancho - eating these tortillas was like chewing up tasteless cardboard.

2. Plain Bagels from Sterk's - they tasted like flattened, stale crackers.

3. Anything by Ener-G Foods - aspartame causes more intestinal cramps.

4. Any pretzels I've encountered - always sweet rather than salty, and they have a strange texture

5. Lushus Lemon Bumble Bar Organic Snack Bar - crispy dirt

6. Original Sponge Cake from Sterk's - this was both soggy and rubbery.

Anytime I try bread products, I always seem to be disappointed. Baked sweets often turn out well, though.

Guest BellyTimber

I prefer Ener-G tapioca bread to white rice bread (they have brown also which I haven't tried) & I can't get the tapioca any more.

It's easy to liven up bland products but it can be a shock at first how bland they are, or gritty, or whatever,

My life was changed by a sandwich toaster I bought from a colleague for 4 pounds.

I like what I cook and bake, I lost confidence but hopefully shall regain it once the OT has helped me set up a usable 'kitchen'.

To my mind a 'duff' product is the new Vogel's breakfast cereal being heavily plugged in the UK, it has about 30 different ingrdeinets including mostly soya, is shapeless, colourless and tasteless (...)

I love puffed buckwheat (from Big Oz).

terri Contributor

Okay, my three worst:

Hol-grain rice crackers - UGH!!!!!!!!

Namaste Pizza crust - YECH!!!!! GROSS!!!! GAG!!!!

Ener G Tapioca Bread - even the dog wouldn't touch it!!

My favorites:

Mr. Ritts ryeless rye bread

Kinninnick Pancake mix - better than Aunt Jemima's!

Kinninnick cookies - ginger ones and the lemon cranberry ones

Boomi bars - carry one with me at all times!

Marys Gone Crackers - caraway flavor

There are a lot of yummy options for us that are naturally gluten-free like UTZ potato chips and Skippy crunchy peanut butter and Bumble Bee's new prime tuna that is not packed in soy or vegetable broth. ;)

AHHHHH...well, never tried it as a bread--only as pizza, which is the best I've tried thus far.

Hi !

This afternoon I went shopping and spied a new brand of gluten free beer. I almost danced in the aisle at this discovery and could hardly wait to get home, stick it in the fridge and enjoy after my tasty gluten-free dinner. Much to my disgust  it was really really really nasty and it cost a fortune. Will stick to red wine in future !

Hi everyone,

Newbie here. :) I live in Dallas, TX and we have Whole Foods here. They have several breads and desserts that I think are the best gluten-free things I've ever tasted. They have blueberry muffins, chocolate chip walnut cookies, and peanut butter cookies to die for. Prairie Bread and Tomato Basil bread are good, but only if toasted. Cornbread is good too, if a little crumbly. Another one that's good is Mi-Del's Arrowroot Cookies - they do taste just like animal crackers. I crush them up in a food processor and use them to make "graham cracker" crusts.

Some interesting articles regarding the use of Zinc Carnosine to help heal gastric ulcers, gastritis and intestinal permeability. I would consult a medical professional about it's use. https://www.nature.com/articles/ncpgasthep0778 https://www.rupahealth.com/post/clinical-applications-of-zinc-carnosine---evidence-review https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7146259/ https://www.fallbrookmedicalcenter.com/zinc-l-carnosine-benefits-dosage-and-safety/

He is. Which makes everything even more difficult. I’m not a believer in “staying for the kids” but I have nowhere to go and it’s not just me, it’s me plus my babies. We live in a beautiful place, lots of land in the country and me and the kids love the place we’ve called home for their entire lives. But Im seeing that he’ll never change, that my kids deserve a happy healthy Momma, and that staying in this as is will be the early death of me. Then I look at the scars covering my entire body…this disease and the chronic stress I’ve been enduring for years that tell me I’m no longer beautiful and no one will ever look at me with interest again. I try self care, try to give myself grace so I can just start loving myself enough to gain strength but the slightest sparkle in my eye and skip in my step attracts his wrath and it all comes crashing ten fold. Life is just absolutely railing me from every single direction leaving me wanting to wave that white flag bc I don’t feel like there’s much hope no matter what happens.

Hi, I was recently diagnosed with Celiac and dermatitis herpetiformis after years of suffering without answers. I lost my mind. I lost my job. I lost so much time. I lost Me. Conventional doctors are opulent come near me and the one who did sat across the room, misdiagnosed me, pumped me full of steroids which collapsed my entire hip for 6 months. So without answers I began my holistic journey. Fast forward a couple of years and still struggling with a mysterious whole body itchy, crawling “skin hell”, perfect teeth now deteriorating, thick hair now thinning rapidly and no more than a day or 2 at most relief….An acquaintance opened up a functional medicine practice. Cash only, I found a way. Within a month tests clearly showing my off the charts gluten allergy/sensitivity as well as the depletion of vital nutrients due to leaky gut and intestinal damage. dermatitis herpetiformis was more than likely what I was experiencing with my skin. I was happy. I thought this is easy, eat healthy Whole Foods, follow the diet restrictions and I finally get to heal and feel confident and like myself again very soon! 😔 Supplements are very pricey but I got them and began my healing. Which leads to the other major issue: not working, stay at home Mom of young kids, entirely financially dependent on my man of 7 plus years. He’s never been supportive of anything I’ve ever done or been thru. He controls everything. I’m not given much money ever at a time and when he does leave money it’s only enough to possibly get gas. His excuse is that I’ll spend it on other things. So my “allowance” is inconsistent and has conditions. He withholds money from me as punishment for anything he wants. Since being diagnosed, he’s gained a new control tactic to use as punishment. He now is in control of when I get to eat. He asked for proof of my diagnosis and diet bc he said I made it up just to be able to eat expensive organic foods. Then after I sent him my file from my doctor he then said she wasn’t a real doctor. 😡. I go days upon days starving, sometimes breaking down and eating things I shouldn’t bc I’m so sick then I pay horribly while he gets annoyed and angry bc I’m not keeping up with all the duties I’m supposed to be doing. His abuse turns full on when I’m down and it’s in these desperate times when I need his support and care the most that I’m punished with silence, being starved, ignored, belittled. He will create more of a mess just bc I’m unable to get up and clean so that when I am better, I’m so overwhelmed with chores to catch up that the stress causes me to go right back into a flare from hell and the cycle repeats. I’m punished for being sick. I’m belittled for starving and asking for healthy clean water. I’m purposely left out of his life. He won’t even tell me he’s going to the grocery or to get dinner bc he doesn’t want me to ask him for anything. I have no one. I have nothing. Im not better. My supplements ran out and I desperately need Vitamin D3 and a methylated B complex at the very minimal just to function….he stares at me blankly…no, a slight smirk, no words. He’s happiest when im miserable and I am miserable.  this is so long and im condensing as much as I can but this situation is so complicated and disgusting. And it’s currently my life. The “IT” girl, the healthy, beautiful, perfect skin, perfect teeth, thick and curly locks for days, creative and talented IT girl….now I won’t even leave this house bc Im ashamed of what this has dont to my body, my skin. Im disgusted. The stress is keeping me from healing and I think he knows that and that’s why he continues to keep me in that state. He doesn’t want me confident or successful. He doesn’t want me healed and healthy bc then how would he put the blame of all his problems on me? This journey has been hell and I’ve been in Hell before. I’ve been killed by an ex, I’ve been raped, robbed, held hostage, abused beyond nightmares but the cruelty I’ve experienced from him bc of this disease is the coldest I’ve ever experienced. I’ve wanted to give up. Starving and in tears, desperate…I found a local food pantry in our small town so I reached out just saying I had Celiac and was on hard times. This woman is blessing me daily with prepared gluten free meals, donations, educational info, people who know this disease and how they manage life and the blessings just keep coming. But it’s overwhelming and I feel like I don’t deserve it at all. He just glared and I know he’s going to sabotage it somehow. I don’t even know what to do anymore. I’m so broken and just want peace and healing.

@Colleen H   I am just curious,  when you were tested for coeliac disease, did the doctors find out if you had any deficiencies? Sometimes muscle pain can be caused by certain deficiencies, for example, magnesium, vitamin D, calcium, and potassium.   Might be worth looking into having some more tests.  Pins and needles can be neuropathy, again caused by deficiencies, such as iron and B12,  which can be reversed if these deficiencies are addressed. In the UK where I live we are usually only tested for iron, B12 and vitamin D deficiencies at diagnosis.   I was very iron anemic and supplementation made a big difference.  B12 was low normal, but in other countries the UK's low normal would be considered a deficiency.  My vitamin D was low normal, and I've been supplementing ever since (when I remember to take it!) My pins and needles definitely started to improve when my known deficiencies were addressed.  My nutritionist also gave me a broad spectrum supplement which really helped, because I suspect I wasn't just deficient in what I mention above but in many other vitamins and minerals.  But a word of warning, don't take iron unless blood tests reveal you actually need it, and if you are taking it your levels must be regularly monitored because too much can make you ill.  (And if you are currently taking iron, that might actually be making your stomach sore - it did mine, so my GP changed my iron supplementation to a gentler form, ferrous gluconate). Lastly, have you been trying to take anything to lessen the pain in your gut?  I get a sore stomach periodically, usually when I've had too much rich food, or when I have had to take an aspirin or certain antibiotics, or after glutening.  When this happens, I take for just a few days a small daily dose of OTC omeprazole.  I also follow a reflux or gastritis diet. There are lots online but the common denominators to these diets is you need to cut out caffeine, alcohol, rich, spicy, acidic food etc and eat small regularly spaced meals.   When I get a sore stomach, I also find it helpful to drink lots of water.  I also find hot water with a few slices of ginger very soothing to sip, or camomile tea.  A wedge pillow at night is good for reflux. Also,  best not to eat a meal 2-3 hours before going to bed. If the stomach pain is getting worse, though, it would be wise to see the doctor again. I hope some of this helps. Cristiana
