Just Diagnosed, Constant Tingling Pain In Left Hand...? Allergies?

Hello everyone!

Well this is my very first post here, and I am glad to have found this site! A little background on me. I have a six year old son who has Type 1 diabetes and through routine bloodwork for that, was found to also have celiac. He has no symptoms of celiac, but the biopsy confirmed the sky-high blood test numbers. About 5 years ago I suspected that I may have celiac and had my blood tested and it was negative. I continued to have all kinds of symptoms. I ignored it and moved on assuming that it couldn't be celiac. So after my son's biopsy 2 weeks ago, I asked them to retest my blood. This time if was very positive and also they found that I am very deficient in B-12. I went back to the doctor for a shot of B-12. They told me to pick up a vitamin B supplement and I have been taking a B-12 that melts under your tongue.

Now to my question (s)! :). Although I have dealt with mild tingling in my fingers for the last several years, it has suddenly got much worse. Since right after the B-12 shot (in my left arm) my left hand has been killing me. All day and night there is tingling and an icy cold/burning pain. It even radiates up past my wrist. Could this be a reaction to the injection? Will it go away? Is there anything I can take to help with the discomfort? And also, should I go back to see my family doctor about this and if so, what can they do? Is there another doctor or specialist I should see?

Another thing I am hoping you can help me with, is how do food allergies come into play with celiac. Along with the blood test for celiac, they also tested for food allergies and it was noted I am allergic to pork..? I have been eating it my whole life, I never knew. Although since my sons blood test about 8 weeks ago we have been eating gluten-free, I still keep having bad days of diarrhea, cramping, headaches, and complete exhaustion. I realized I have been putting bacon bits on my baked potatoes and wondered if that could be the culprit? Sorry if that's a dumb question, I just can't figure out why I still feel like I'm being glutened when Im so careful.

Thank you so much for reading through all of this and any advice you can give!! :)

Hi Annie. I am new here but I have a few thoughts for you. First, congrats on being gluten free. As you have probably read, there are many afflictions that can be attributed to celiac. However, there are also many that are not. Sometimes I think to many people think all their issues will resolve by going gluten free. I believe this is a misconception because of research finding links (in some people) to other medical conditions. I'm not saying this isn't the case only stating that celiac is not a catch all. If it were me, I would get a referral to a neurologist who can have very simple tests ordered that can identify and nerve damage or a neurological issues. See where that takes you. We should always question medical issues we have and do our best to resolve them. Resting on our laurels helps nothing. I sincerely hope you figure out what's going on. Be Well.

You have only recently been diagnosed and it does take some time to heal. The low B12 is likely the cause of the tingling in your hands but since it has gotten worse after the shot call your doctor about it and see what they say. Personally I would give yourself time to heal before seeing a neuro. If the issues don't resolve in a few weeks then do explore other possibilities.

Is your home gluten free? If not be sure you have gotten a new toaster for just the gluten free members of the family. You would also need a new strainer and things like condiments, nut butters etc need to replaced for just the gluten free eaters. You also cannot bake or cook with flour for others safely. IF others eat bread or cakes it is best to have them come into the house premade.

It is also a good idea to drop dairy products until you are feeling better. I hope things get better soon and do check out the Celiac 101 thread in the Coping section and the home page info on safe and unsafe products. If you have any questions don't hesitiate to ask.

the worsening tingles may be healing. Make sure you have enough potassium in your diet.

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply, everyone! I really hope it's just part of the healing process, it's so annoying and painful at times. I will look at getting some potassium also.

What happens if you accidentally eat a food that you are allergic to? Do you have symptoms of glutening...?

Thanks again!

Hi, did you ever get a diagnoses for this pain? Coincidentally, I also recv. a B-12 shot recently and I am experiencing the SAME almost exact symptoms. I too assumed it was from a sensitivity even though ive felt it before..just not in such as way. Its way more painful now. It seems to get worse with my wheat intake. Is it possible that BOTH the B-12 shot combined with the wheat creates some sort of extra toxic mix? I love the energy the shots give me but this hand. arm leg stuff...its not too great! What do you think since you have probably been back to the doc. since your last post?

I have a tomato allergy and red food coloring does not like me. Things seem to "pop" up once a major culprit is removed.

Have you been tested for celiac? If not make sure you stay on gluten until that is done and do get tested ASAP. Celiac can cause nerve issues beyond the ones caused by B12 deficiency.

How I think that allergies can be created by Celiac. I think that the small intestine gets damaged. Perhaps it even gets deteriated enough so that food stuffs leak out. The body discovers these particles and attacks them as foreign. They do not belong there. The body is designed to make antibodies which attack these particles anywhere in the body. . Then when you take in food with the same particles the body will attack.

I have trouble with nausea. It often starts when I’m anxious about something (home repairs, sick dog) but continues long after the home is repaired or the dog is healthy again. When it happens I eat less and lose weight.  My gastroenterologist suggested ginger or peppermint tea. I don’t know if that will work or not because I haven't had the problem since she suggested it.

Hello  I'm not sure what to think . Seems no matter what I do I get sick. I had some yogurt with only 2 grams of sugar and is labeled gluten free ...the strawberry version seemed to really set me off My jaw is burning as well as my stomach and my feet.  Horrible pain..plus acid reflux and nausea... sensitivity to touch pain. ..yikes !! I don't know if it's from the lactose in the yogurt or if I'm getting an ulcer  This condition can make you question yourself quite a bit.  Then if you are not sure the anxiety comes 😞 Does any of these symptoms sound familiar to anyone? The neuropathy is quite intense.  What do you eat or drink after this happens  Open to suggestions  Thank you

Of course my son is on a 100% gluten free diet.  I wish his symptoms were not debilitating as there are right now.  He cannot work, even when a miniscule of cross contamination occurs.  It's not just GI distress, but intense fatigue, brain fog, depression, anxiety, insomnia, etc.  It's literally neurological inflammation.  Not to be taken lightly here.  We have sought out many other possible ways to cope during this window of time (8 months!!!!)  without success.   AN-PEP does not help and seems like studies on this are not well researched.  So, we are trying this out because research shows some promising results.  And, all participants showed no cravings afterwards, no signs of addiction.  The patch is different than the oral route such as smoking, vaping, gum, pouch, etc.

Have you tried AN-PEP enzymes, for example, GlutenX (who is a sponsor here)? A lot of research has shown that it can break down small amounts of gluten in the stomach, before it reaches the intestines. It might be a better approach than risking nicotine addiction, and the questionable research around this. I also hope that he’s trying to be 100% Gluten-Free.

Hi all  I was diagnosed Coeliac a few years ago and follow a gluten free diet. The list of foods that I can eat without a problem grows shorter on a weekly basis. [I also have diabetes and asthma also].  BUT the reason I am posting this is because I seem to struggle with nausea quite a lot, which is really quite debilitating, and I was wondering if others suffer from nausea, even if following a gluten free diet.
