  1. Yes, it is something to be very concerned about and all Celiacs should follow a strict, gluten-free diet. If you have any interest in being healthy in your later years, it is wise to take this condition seriously and eat well. Having said that, it is also important to learn to eat gluten-free without developing a fear about gluten in general. I would strongly...
  2. You are correct in that Starbuck's now has their own brand of soy milk. I contacted them and asked at my local Bucky's because I trust them....they know me and my gluten issue well! It is 100% gluten-free and it could be that there was a CC issue that got you or you are sensitive to another ingredient in the Starbuck's soy milk. I have never reacted to...
  3. There is no such thing as a borderline Celiac....that's like being told you are borderline pregnant! What probably happened is you haven't done enough damage to really spike your blood levels yet so consider yourself lucky. You are starting to show damage so it's time to cut out the gluten! With 3 diagnosed relatives, it's a no-brainer. Welcome to...
  4. I hear what you are saying because, as we speak, my father is slowly dying from celiac disease and neither he nor the rest of my dim-witted family seem to care. He has been diagnosed recently with beginner dementia and I totally believe it's all from undiagnosed celiac disease. He looks like the poster child for it, as did I, and I think he is too confused...
  5. This article is extremely interesting and a good read BUT I one small issue with Dr. Fasano. He states in this piece that sticking perfectly, over years, to any diet for medical purposes is notoriously challenging. For such reasons, diet therapy is an incomplete solution. Sorry, but I totally disagree. There are many Celiacs who just take it all in stride...
  6. A quality issue? What does that mean? Maybe the gluten stuff didn't taste good to non-Celiacs after eating the gluten-free cake? I think it may all boil down to a liability issue. Even when a company does a great thing and offers a gluten-free snack, there will be those Celiacs who find some kind of imaginary problem and threaten to sue. There are...
  7. It all depends on your age. I was 45 when my cycle stopped completely, after 7 years of wonky, irregular periods. FYI, my mother was 36 years old when her cycles stopped, never to return. I did not go to doctors about it because they were too busy harassing me about screening tests to actually listen to what I was saying. I knew I did not have cancer or anything...
  8. To give you gluten-free food for thought.....in Peter Green's book on Celiac Disease, he clearly states, and I admit it surprised the hell out of me, that those with DH can touch gluten without a DH reaction. Any other reaction is an allergy, not an intolerance. A person has to ingest gluten for the autoimmune reaction to occur and then the reaction erupts...
  9. The ONLY coffee, non-flavored, that would be a problem are ones you generally only see in Europe. Regular, brewed coffee can contain barley or other grains. It's common practice in Europe and why, when traveling there, you should only drink latte's and cappuccino's.....no brewed coffee served in urns on the breakfast table! There is a coffee substitute...
  10. I also take thyroid hormone as I am hypothyroid. I take a good regimen of vitamins and minerals also so am set with that. I wonder what my teeth would be like if I didn't! Funny enough, my teeth look great....they are nice and straight. It's the gums that are not good...the support structure. I have bone loss in the jaw due to celiac disease but that seems...
  11. No where does it say in any post here that the Type 2 diabetic deserved to die! The poster just pointed out that anyone who is obese is more likely to be suffering from Type 2 diabetes, which is a totally different animal than Type 1. It is NOT an autoimmune disorder. No one is preaching either...they may have gone slightly off topic but that's about it....
  12. I cringed when you referred to Celiac as a disability as I do not and never will consider myself disabled. Airlines are not required to accommodate anyone with a medical issue with regards to food. They aren't even required to feed you at all. Diabetics, generally, do not get special meals either. I think the airlines that have them on long haul flights are...
  13. The problem I have with your first statement is there is very little hidden gluten in food products. The reason people think so is because they don't know what is in food, and most people don't today unless they have a major food issue. My mother argued with me that there was no wheat in white bread and was very adamant about it! I asked her what she thought...
  14. I was gluten-free for about 3 days before I had the blood work done and it didn't make any difference.....I still tested ridiculously high. Be aware that testing on a 2 year old is unreliable as they may not have had time to develop antibodies to gliadin at such a young age, believe it or not. I still think it good you made the effort but if it comes back...

    ARCHIVED Glutened At The Dentist

I much be truly lucky then to have such a well versed dentist in Celiac! The point I was trying to make is that the vast majority of products do not contain gluten and I have done my homework. That is why I was wondering if many here actually are sensitive to other ingredients in these products? Sometimes other sensitivities can mimic a gluten exposure...
  16. I know this is an older thread that has been revived but I am amazed at the rudeness here and the lack of understanding of how a Celiac reaction works. TFAG was 100% correct in her reply...you cannot have a Celiac reaction from touching gluten, it has to be ingested, period. If there is a topical reaction, then that is an allergy issue but I'm sure the whole...
  17. Mono and di-glycerides are fats so should not have any gluten in them. I have not had any problems ingesting these. There are a lot of mistakes with on-line lists and I am not sure why these would be included.
  18. Thank you! I am not against immigration at all, if people come here and work hard to pay their legal way. I live in a state that has been heavily hit with illegal immigration and it has touched me personally so I have strong feelings about it. If this country wants to have money to become a strong nation again and have funds to help those who truly need assistance...
  19. May I ask what the prep is for the pill endoscopy? Do they look at the small intestine only or does it still snap away throughout the whole colon? I ask because I was diagnosed through blood work and refused the biopsy because I was so sick at the time of diagnosis I couldn't face the prospect of having them shove a tube down my throat. I had a phenomenal...
  20. Are you sure we don't have the same mother? Your statement had me rolling on the floor with laughter, even though the reality of not having a great relationship is nothing to laugh about. I SO feel your pain!
  21. You certainly are going about it the right way! Most doctors would give that advice.....to tighten up as much as you can and then have any excess tissue removed. I think anyone who loses that much weight and puts so much effort into it deserves a little nip and tuck if needed. You are very inspiring!
  22. Hmmm...no, I'm not sure what you are getting at. I stated fact. Italy is the same way. All socialist countries have more "offerings" for the masses but it's solely due to the fact that they pay taxes at a far greater rate than Americans do so have more social programs. Personally, I like the way we do things in the States except for the following.........
  23. UK is a socialist country and the food really isn't free......they pay much higher taxes than we do here in the States so have more programs for aid. Ditto for Canada. I really don't have any good news on that front and can feel your pain. It's obscene what I spend on food every week! I just keep telling myself I eat better than everyone I know and take no...
  24. Your experience is probably very common and it mirrors the reactions I get from my own immediate family, so do not think you are alone. In fact, I have become a little estranged from my family because of it and that fact doesn't bother me at all. It took healing on my part to realize how dysfunctional the rest of them are! I had the gene testing done...
  25. I am not a huge sugar or starch person either and it has not made a big difference in the problems. I am sure it has helped things from getting too bad as I shudder to think what would happen if I ate a crappy diet to boot but there isn't going to be any miracle cure with this, unfortunately. Having Sjogren's is one of the biggest contributors to dental...
