Phyllis28 replied to fatcat11188's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was diagnosed at 20. I agree with AliB you have two choices. Eat gluten and be sick or eat gluten free and be well. For me the choice was easy - eat gluten free and be well. There is plently of good gluten free food to eat. Your social life does not need to change but you will have to do some preparation and planning. Strategies are eat before... -

Phyllis28 replied to ckmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
taweavmo3, your daughter might be eligable for an IEP (Individual Education Plan). My son was in special education and had an IEP. The school is required by law to follow the IEP and parents. I had to get a letter from the doctor requesting my son be placed in Special Education. If she is not eligable for an IEP follow cruelshoes suggestion of getting... -

ARCHIVED School - I Need To Vent
Phyllis28 replied to ckmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have no idea if this will work or is even an option but I'll toss it out anyway. Is it possible that the teacher can send out a flyer saying something like" "Due to allergy concerns parents are not allowed to bring food for the classroom unless at least 5 days advance notice is given. Any food brought in without advance notice will not be accepted... -

Below are the names of some of the long term stay hotel brands Residence Inn by Marriott TownPlace Suites by Marriott Extended Stay America Hiton has a brand equivalent to Residence Inn but I can not remember the name of it. I usually only go as far as finding out what my food choices are. If none of the choices appear safe I quietly bring in my own food without asking permission.

My husband has been diagnosed as Pre-Diabetic. He is also on medicine for high blood pressure and high cholesteral. His doctor has recommended the South Beach Diet. Has anyone done this gluten free? The majority of this is easy to do gluten free but the starch foods though still limited are many whole wheat. I have already replaced the white rice...

ARCHIVED Traveling/vacations With gluten-free Diet?
Phyllis28 replied to todzwife's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The major grocery stores in Orange County do not carry much in the way specialty gluten free foods. You will find Kraft and Hormel products but no baked goods or gluten free cereal. There is a WholeFoods in Tustin and a Henry's in Costa Mesa. Both are about a twenty minute drive without traffic from Disneyland. The same drive at rush hour is about 4... -
ARCHIVED Chicken
Phyllis28 replied to dbmamaz's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You might consider removing the gluten from the kitchen. I live in a gluten limited household, basically bread and cereal. The gluten food is kept outside the kitchen in what I call a 'Sandwich Making Station". It contains a small refrigerator, a micorwave and a large kitchen cart along with kitchen utentsils, plates, bowls and flatware. It also contains... -

ARCHIVED Freezer Recipes?
Phyllis28 replied to Mandy F.'s topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Not all chicken broth is created equal. You have to read the ingredients on the can or box to determine if it is gluten free. I ,personally, only buy chicken broth that is labeled Gluten Free, usually the boxes (not cans) of chicken broth are marked gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Roommate Issues Pt 4
Phyllis28 replied to num1habsfan's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
If you have not already done so, cancel any services (Phone, utilities ect...) in your name or your parents name effective on the day you move into your new apartment. Notify your roommate that she will need to arrange to have these services to continue. -
ARCHIVED Help My Son's Broken Spirit
Phyllis28 replied to nattrail's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son had an IEP from the middle of second grade all the way through high school. The squeeky (but nice) wheel gets the attention. Keep checking with them on the status. The very few times I was unable to resolve a problem with the school I called the Special Education coordinator at the district office. Hope everything works out. -

No advice, just sending hugs. -
If you want to get tested, one option is to find a new doctor, if possible. One way to do this is to contact the celiac support group and ask them for recommendations. Another option is to speak with your mom about not getting tested at all and simply going gluten free.

ARCHIVED Borderline Results Again. Should I Get Biopsy?
Phyllis28 replied to FlourShopGirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It is your choice to try the diet and skip the biopsy or have the biopsy. In order to have a biopsy for celiac you need to continue eating gluten. One advantage to the biopsy is that the doctor can check for other problems while doing the endo and possibly do a colonoscopy at the same time. I never had a biopsy, a positive response to the diet was... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Beer
Phyllis28 replied to elye's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I brought home Red Bridge beer one day even though I have never liked beer. My gluten eating husband liked it enough to drink it in place of his Bohemia until the six pack was gone. -
ARCHIVED Freezer Recipes?

I freeze spegetti sauce over Tinkyada brand rice pasta or ricie on a regular basis. I have frozen chili over rice pasta and rice pasta. Grilled chicken also does well in the freezer. I defrost it and the chicken cold. -

I have also had sinus trouble for many years. I do not have allergies. I agree with Jersyangle that one of keys is to keep the sinues clean and clear. I do this by taking two hot steaming showers a day to maintain them. If they flair up I take many of the steps Jersyangle does. Hope you feel better soon.
