  1. If you live in an area with a lot of Jewish people, you might be able to get a brand called Mother's. I have only heard about it and not tried it. But I have also heard that it tastes terrible. They put out a regular margarine, but this is not it. It is one made only for a certain Jewish holiday. Forgive me for not knowing the details better. I am not...
  2. Coconut oil is wonderful on toast. I don't add any salt to it. Daughter loves it with cinnamon and sugar on top.
  3. Wish I could find some here. Whole Foods is too far away and my health food store can't get it.
  4. Can't get the Coconut Bliss here. I've tried. They can't produce enough of it to supply the demand. Dangit.
  5. Olive Garden does have a gluten free menu. No pasta on it though.
  6. Eek! I just looked it up because I've bought the carrot cake kind for my daughter before and don't recall her getting sick from it. But sure enough... Soy protein! I wonder if this is something new that they recently added? Some sorbets are free of dairy, gluten and soy. We get Sorbetto. It's locally made so might not be available everywhere. Dell...
  7. Enjoy Life makes soy and dairy free chocolate chips. You can get Halloween molds and make chocolates that way.
  8. The boxes in my area still say that they contain gluten.
  9. Egg replacer is not the same thing as egg substitutes such as Egg Beaters. The ingredients of the Ener-G brand are: Potato Starch, tapioca starch flour, leavening (calcium lactate [not derived from dairy], calcium carbonate, citric acid [corn derived]), sodium carboxymethylcellulose, methylcellulose
  10. My daughter loves chicken and noodles. I start by using my huge non-stick skillet. I then cook some chicken breasts cut in small pieces in a bit of olive oil. I then add a chopped onion and some sliced carrots and celery and if I have them, a handful or two of frozen peas. After stirring together, I add enough sweet rice flour to coat it all and then...
  11. I usually don't use recipes for soup. Instead just using whatever I happen to have handy. So it never comes out the same way twice. My last batch was super yummy because the onions I grew in my garden this year are really sweet. I started with a couple of medium onions. I chopped them fine (daughter doesn't like large chunks of onion) and carmelized...
  12. You also have to be careful about cross contamination even if what you are eating is gluten-free. There are cones and the scoop may not be cleaned carefully. Daughter has a dairy allergy so we don't do ice cream, but we did find some dairy free sorbet on a day trip. I worried about cross contamination, but she didn't get sick from it.
  13. Shouldn't be a concern for gluten, but might be a concern if you can't have dairy. The coloring is usually free of dairy but the candies aren't.
  14. Not safe. I fell for that one when daughter was first diagnosed. Lady at the health food store insisted it was safe because when sprouted, it becomes a "live" food. And that may be. But it's still wheat or spelt or whatever grain it is. Daughter got really sick from the stuff.
  15. I guess I am lucky in that I don't like most fair food or what I would consider junk food. I am always on the lookout for good fresh vegetables. Found celery sticks at a wings place, but not sure they would sell them to you by themselves. What I do is pack a large purse with things I know are safe for my daughter and I (both have food allergies) to...
  16. Yep. I don't have celiac, but I can't do any of the sugar alcohols except for the occasional piece of gum. They are a laxative.
  17. That is soooo cool! And the kind of cake my husband would like. Heh! When I was a kid, I used to make meatloaf in a pie pan, then cut it in wedges and serve it with a scoop of mashed potatoes on top.
  18. I must say I love the Nacho Chreese. To me it tastes just like the real thing. But the powder? Nope. Too mustardy for me. Daughter loves it though. I make pizza for her with it and grilled Chreese sandwichs.
  19. First off, I must say that book sounds sort of wacky. Second, I agree that you need a proper diagnosis. My daughter has food allergies including wheat and gluten. Sometimes allergies can cause similar symptoms to celiac. But if you have a gluten allergy, you have to eat the same way. The first thing we did was take a good hard look at any prepared...
  20. I just tried this and I love it! I was a bit hesitant due to mixed reviews that I'd read about it. Normally we eat some nutritional yeast on top of our pasta. Taste is good but texture leaves something to be desired. Well, this stuff solves that problem. Alas, it is the texture that my daughter is complaining about. Hmmm... It's made of walnuts and...
  21. I've been buying the Tyson cooked chicken legs. Oddly there is no broth in those but there are natural flavorings. Daughter hasn't gotten sick from them, but she has a gluten and wheat allergy and not celiac. She is very sensitive to gluten though.
  22. Chicken sometimes is plumped up with broth and then has modified food starch or wheat added to keep the broth from seeping out. Alas, I've found it is safer to order a burger patty at fast food places than it is chicken in any form. Not that Arby's has burger patties. I've checked their menu and see nothing safe for us to eat except perhaps for the potato...
  23. I did the same thing. What I learned was that I can make somewhat big soft pretzels using a mix. I can't make little crisp pretzels.
  24. When my daughter was first diagnosed, I bought all sorts of flour and tried to make my own mixes. I wound up spending a lot of money and throwing out a lot of flour. Now I just buy the Bette Hagman's mix already made up. I find that works for most things. I also buy sweet rice flour for making gravies.
  25. Glad it worked for you. Wouldn't work for us because of our dairy and egg allergy. I don't make meatloaf very often because it seems like such a pain to do. The last couple of times, I made a recipe that I found online that called for oats. I used gluten free oats and I processed them to a powder in the food processor before using. The recipe called...
