  1. My husband thinks it's funny to pronounce the "j" in there. Nobody else ever thinks so though. My dad asks for corn "torteelias". *cringe* My mom ordered "crewsonts" for croissants. I didn't do well with French but I do know how that is pronouced.
  2. OMG! The "alot" one really got me. I even looked it up at dictionary.com thinking I was missing something. It's not a word. I saw someone on a yahoo message board claim that it was and explained why. When I made the comment to my mom that I couldn't stand seeing this, she replied quite hotly, "Well... You don't KNOW. Maybe it IS a word!" In...
  3. I make this for my daughter and myself. It's enough for two so there would be leftovers. Start with a can of turkey, including the broth. Dump it in a pan (I use a large, deep, skillet). Add a spoonful or two of sweet rice flour (depending on how thick you like your gravy). Heat through, stirring. Serve over mashed potatoes. For my husband, I do...
  4. I am eating this now and it's soooo good! I started with Ener-G rice pizza shells. Topped with olive oil and baked. Cooled slightly then covered with some really good hummus, sliced tomatoes, white onions and Kalamatta olives. Can't wait to make this again! I like it so much I might have it for a bedtime snack. Mmmm...
  5. My friend says supposingly. She also says seen when shen means saw.
  6. Sorry to hear that! We have a store near here that sells prepared food, both self serve and behind the case where they serve you. They are good to label the ingredients, but all it takes is one person to use the tongs or spoon from one thing on another and then whatever it is, is cross contaminated. I've seen it happen. Asked for roasted potatoes and...
  7. This time of year I hear a lot of people talking about punkins. Yesterday, a woman who uses this pronounciation recommended to another woman that she eat rooterbaygers (rutabagas) instead of potatoes. She also mentioned something about the casseen (casein) pronouced "cayseen" in some sort of cheese. My daughter is currently driving me nuts with what...
  8. My one SIL is notorious for being slow with pretty much everything she does. Her favorite saying is, "Give me two minutes. TWO minutes!" She will then hold up two fingers for effect. I have come to learn that when she says and does this, it is going to be a good hour before she gets done with whatever it was. I no longer accept lunch dates with...
  9. Daughter was watching Rachel Ray yesterday. I hate it when she says "yummo"! Was on another forum and kept reading about the "ordainments" on this woman's Christmas tree. I don't know if she was making a joke or what. On many forums I have seen people confuse the words "wandering" and "wondering". I've seen that people went to the store and "baught...
  10. Interesting! My friend suffers from this. Her dad was a celiac. AFAIK she hasn't been tested for celiac but she has been told to change her diet and she refuses to do so. Alas, she has some other medical conditions and each one calls for a different diet. Because of this she just gave up and decided to eat whatever she wants. Sad. but I don't think...
  11. It's true that we are surrounded by gluten but that doesn't mean you have to ingest it. Yes, every time you dine away from home or eat food that you didn't prepare, you run the risk of someone not understanding the diet and/or cross contamination. That's a given. There are things you can do though. De-gluten your home. That means replacing various...
  12. What brand of rice milk? Rice Dream contains gluten. As for Wendy's, that food could have easily been cross contaminated.
  13. Yes, that was the one! Sadly it has peas in it.
  14. Nucoa margarine (stick) is made of soybean oil with no dairy. Benecol is soybean with no dairy. I've heard tell there is a Fleshmans (sp?) that is the same but I've yet to find it. I have seen some with soybeans in it which we can't have. I can't remember the name.
  15. My friend had this. Her dentist told her to try a fluoride free one and that did the trick.
  16. I think the bean soup is a wonderful idea although that might not be so good for the summer. You could do bean enchiladas, topped with strips of pepper and onion. I make vegan "refried" beans by cooking the pinto beans with some chili powder and onion, then partially mashing with a potato masher. I like a bit of chunkiness to mine. You could use these...
  17. I don't think diabetes in and of itself is considered a disability. I have diabetes and am disabled but I also have fibromyalgia, psoriatic arthritis, venous insufficiency and neuropathy caused by diabetes. More recently was diagnosed with gastroparesis. All these things add up.
  18. My daughter likes the Ener-G Tapioca.
  19. I made my Grandma's recipe for Cherry Jazz before they came out with Betty Crocker. I think I used Namaste Yellow cake and it's a double layer. I used a layer of cherry pie filling (2 or 3 cans). Then I sprinkled on the cake mix and drizzled with a cup of melted coconut oil because of a dairy allergy. Otherwise you could use butter or margarine. Mix...
  20. Ooh! Where did you find the Theo? Thanks!
  21. Bread is really the tough one for me! If it were me, I would just do without it. As a diabetic myself, bread is something I don't eat often. Still, it is nice to be able to grab a quick sandwich every now and then. At first, I bought a bread machine and tried all sorts of recipes and mixes. If something came out good once, it never did again. The...
  22. Sometimes you can't get people to understand. If I were you, I'd bring my own turkey and maybe the whole meal. What else might she do?
  23. I found this quick to fix recipe in a magazine and made my own variation of it. I put it together the day before and then baked it when we wanted dinner. 1 can Mexi Corn (I couldn't find so used Southwestern Corn) 1 can Creamed Corn 1 pound ground beef 1 small onion, chopped Prepared mashed potatoes (4 or more servings) Nucoa Margarine (or...
