ARCHIVED Should I Not Eat These?
hathor replied to whattodo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you still have symptoms upon going gluten free for a period of time, I would first eliminate casein if I were you. That seems to be the most common other intolerance. I wouldn't eliminate things unless you don't yet feel optimal & want to experiment. In that case, you would either eliminate one thing at a time and see if there is a response, or... -
ARCHIVED Confused About Enterolag Results
hathor replied to lapsy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Where did you find out this information? I have a subtype 6 and a subtype 5. I don't know that I have any pain, sleep or mood issues (more than anyone else ), but I have always been prone to headaches. I also have a lousy sense of balance and have had bouts of a balance disorder called Mal de Debarquement Syndrome. But I'm dealing with the one by doing... -
ARCHIVED Just Got Results And What's This Double Dq Thing You Talk About?
hathor replied to LynneM's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Do you mean what genes you have? You can find that out by swabbing the inside of your cheek. I did that through Enterolab. They also did stool testing showing my intolerance to casein, egg, soy, & yeast, in addition to gluten. They don't test for anything else. I'm on my own trying to figure that out ... -
ARCHIVED Mesa Sunrise Flakes Breakfast Cereal Recalled
hathor replied to larry mac's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I emailed the company. This is their answer: "Thank you for your email. This is currently only isolated to Mesa Sunrise product in the UK with the code date of 12MAY07 to 14MAY07. It is different cereal then that made for the U.S. market. The batch # is the same as the freshness date located on the back of the bag upper right hand corner. We... -
ARCHIVED Lab Results
hathor replied to pedro's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Nearly everyone in the US has gluten intolerance or celiac genes (only exception, some of Asian heritage). One-third have the celiac genes. Obviously more is involved in having a problem than simply having these genes. If it were me, I would test when there are symptoms. That is the way my kids have decided to handle it (they are old enough so it... -
ARCHIVED Test Being Done And Worried
hathor replied to whattodo's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Let me amend what I just said to say that I think that many diseases can be effectively helped through proper diet and exercise. But you aren't going to get many doctors to tell you about that, or that even know. Their training is all about drugs, surgery, and the like. At least with celiac/gluten intolerance, doctors don't have any treatments to throw... -
ARCHIVED Test Being Done And Worried
hathor replied to whattodo's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The way I see it, I would be more worried about having a disease for which there is no effective treatment, just palliative drugs or treatments (like practically all other diseases). If you have celiac, you go gluten free & your body repairs itself and you can be fine. Yes, there are some who don't heal completely, but I believe they are in the minority... -
ARCHIVED Confused About Genetic Testing Results
hathor replied to DebW's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Might I suggest your husband going gluten-free for a period of time & see how he feels. There are so many symptoms for gluten intolerance; he just may not be aware of what it is doing to him because, to him, this is how he always feels. I remember getting my Enterolab result back for soy. I never noticed any reaction from soy. I went off it and a... -
I can't recommend any vitamins right off hand. I found a nice combo at my local coop and it even says it is vegetarian & doesn't contain gluten, casein, soy, or yeast. But it turns my pee a bright yellow & I'm not so sure about that Do NOT trust the labels to tell you if they contain something. Look for affirmative statements that they do...

"Casein is in everything dairy, at least as far as I know." I've read that ghee is so clarified you just have fat & no milk protein left. I know I've never had any problems at Indian restaurants (once I stopped eating all their yummy breads ) I was trying to find something definitive online, but failed. I guess my google mojo isn't working...

Yes, I really like the tortillas. I have a freezer full of them. -
Lactose intolerance means you have a problem digesting milk sugar. Casein intolerance means your system is having an immune response to milk protein. As you can see, I was tested for the latter. According to Enterolab and other sources I've read (although there isn't as much on this as for gluten intolerance), continuing to eat casein if you are intolerant...

ARCHIVED Do You Get Symptoms After Eating Casein?
hathor replied to SUZ42's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Yes. Next question Since you show an Enterolab result of casein intolerance, you shouldn't be so surprised that you had a reaction. I was having only tiny bits of casein for some time since I was mostly eating vegan. OK, I would eat out & the veggies or the pasta sauce would have a little butter, cream, or cheese I didn't expect. I wouldn... -
ARCHIVED Left Doctors Appointment Feeling Perplexed....
hathor replied to Islandgirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Gluten intolerance causing IBS (not that I've ever heard of that one) would call for the same diet as celiac. Whatever your blood tests say (here's hoping that your doctor ordered all the ones you need -- sometimes they don't and your doctor doesn't sound that informed), you actually do have an "official" reason to avoid gluten. As if your positive response... -
Followup information from Nature's Path about Mesa Sunrise cereal (boy, did they get back to me quickly ): "Thank you for your email. How can you tell the batch you have? This is my favorite cold cereal. I looked at what I have and there are no batch numbers anywhere I can see. The notice raised more questions than it answers. Are all batches tested at some point & this one failed? Or what this a random catch? The first time the cereal has been tested? If one batch has problems...

OK, I'm confused. What is salad cream then? I took a guess that it was what we in the US call salad dressing. I guess not

ARCHIVED Just When I Thought I'd Figured It All Out
hathor replied to hathor's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
A little more research -- Someone elsewhere also mentioned that sometimes dried fruit is dusted. But why wouldn't the law require this to be listed in ingredients? Besides the list I posted said never to eat dried fruit, not to check it out or make sure it isn't dusted with flour. (Wheat flour would seem a poor choice for this since wheat is a common... -
ARCHIVED Just When I Thought I'd Figured It All Out

I was researching something else & found this list of what is allowed, to be questioned, or not allowed on a gluten free diet. It is from the University of Rochester Medical Center: Open Original Shared Link It includes dried fruit, canola oil, & cooking sprays as items to be avoided. Huh? Other than the cooking sprays that include flour... -
What kind of Bush beans did you have? Some aren't gluten-free. Open Original Shared Link What was in the refried beans besides beans? I guess it comes down to whether you react to plain, unseasoned beans or whether something added to the beans is what is causing you problems. I can't offer any more assistance than that; you have to keep track &...

Some people have an intolerance to any legumes. Others react to selected ones. For instance, I react to soy and noticed a similar reaction to something with lupin flour (seems to be Europe's up-and-coming addition to foods -- it was in an imported gluten-free pasta I tried). But I don't react to lentils, beans, peas, or peanuts that I can tell. Actually...

Did you check the ingredients of the salad dressing? Is this the way you react to gluten? Other than that, you may be noticing now an intolerance to either casein or soy. Sometimes other intolerances become noticeable after one is gluten-free for a bit. But if you've been having casein and soy without problems recently, it probably isn't that. Or...

ARCHIVED Travel/language Cards?

Here are free cards in 38 different languages: Open Original Shared Link -
I thought Hard Rock had withdrawn its gluten-free menu. I saw that in a Clan Thompson update. There is a DCCeliac Yahoo group with frequent discussion of different restaurants. Open Original Shared Link I searched the archives; no one has mentioned this place.
