I agree that you should keep eating gluten and get tested if you can. The reason for the increase in symptoms after being gluten free is the antibodies flaring in response to you injesting what your body doesn't want you to consuming. Your body is letting you know in no uncertain terms that gluten is not something it wants. You don't have to consume a...

Do I have dermatitis herpetiformis?
ravenwoodglass replied to Christine-TD's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Thank you so much for posting this. I am another person who suffered for many, many years with DH that was misdiagnosed repeatedly. I developed DH about age 7 and suffered until my late 40's being told it was everything from 'poison ivy in my blood to atopic dermatitis to 'pickers acne. After a year or so gluten free I had clear skin for the first time in...- 7 replies

Low gluten ?
ravenwoodglass replied to bkelly79's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This does not sound like a doctor that knows much about celiac. If he does end up labeling you with 'IBS' please do get a second opinion from a doctor in a different practice. -
confused about test results
ravenwoodglass replied to abaiker's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you do have gene testing done be aware that most doctors only test for the two most common genes. There has been research that shows that other genes can also be associated with celiac. Not being positive for DQ2 or DQ8 is not a for sure that you don't have celiac. You have a good doctor to be checking for celiac. I was at one point thought to have... -
Did the doctor only take one biopsy? 5 or 6 from different areas should have been taken. That said it is quite possible to be celiac and only have one test come back positive. It is even possible to have none of the blood tests be positive and still be celiac. If you are done with all celiac related testing then give the diet a good strict try for at least...

Have you talked to your OB/GYN? I experienced hair loss after stopping the pill. I don't think that is unusual. I also lost hair after the birth of each child. If the loss is patchy you should see a derm but if it is a diffuse thinning this may be normal for stopping the hormones. It wouldn't hurt to maybe take a stress B for a bit.

confused about test results
ravenwoodglass replied to abaiker's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The test you had a very high positive with is specific to celiac. You don't have to be positive in all the tests to be celiac. If your doctor wants to do a biopsy then stay on gluten until that is done then start the diet strictly when that test is over. Welcome to the club you never wanted to join. Do check out the Newbie 101 thread at the top of the Coping... -
If you do get a convection oven do get a small muffin tin and paper cups for cupcakes. I got one when my big oven died and couldn't afford to fix it. I have found cakes come out better as cupcakes for me and I like to be able to freeze some for times when I don't want to bake but want something sweet. I like putting chocolate chips on them fresh out of the...

Do I have dermatitis herpetiformis?
ravenwoodglass replied to Christine-TD's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
You're welcome. Do be sure to read the Newbie 101 thread. There is a lot to do to stay safe and if you do have DH you may find you are very sensitive to even trace amounts. It is best to get tested if you can. You have only been gluten free for a couple of weeks at this point. If you stay gluten free and then decide to get tested farther down the road you...- 7 replies

Do I have dermatitis herpetiformis?
ravenwoodglass replied to Christine-TD's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
1.It is possible. It does sound like DH but a rash around the mouth can sometimes be caused by vitamin deficiencies. 2.You do have to be eating gluten for celiac testing. It sounds like you haven't been gluten free very long though and if you still have active lesions on the inside of your elbows and hands they might be able to biopsy. The biopsy needs...- 7 replies

You should go with a sublingual B12 if your levels are dropping. You may not be healed enough to get much benefit from a swallowed tablet. For the folate I would just go with a good multi. A liquid multi might be a good idea until your fully healed. Just make sure any supplements you take are gluten free. Wheat and barley grass can be included and the item...

Blood tests
ravenwoodglass replied to tali's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes it is possible to have celiac with only one or two positive tests. If your doctor wants to do an endoscopy then do stay on gluten until that is done. -
Welcome. You ahve gotten some good suggestions already. All I want to add is that if you are in a dorm do make sure you can have a convection oven. if they are not allowed normally ask your advisor to intercede and see if you can get special permission to have one. They put my daughter in senior housing her first year so she would have a kitchenette and...

Welcome. Anxiety, depression and brain fog can certainly be part of the Celiac spectrum of issues. You could have gotten glutened and be dealing with that and it can take some time for those neuro symptoms to resolve after you have been glutened. Do check out the Newbie 101 thread at the top of the Coping section to make sure that you are strictly gluten...

This needs to be taken to a higher court. Poor kid and I can only imagine how much the mother is suffering.

Biopsy today
ravenwoodglass replied to Jctb's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It isn't unusual for the small intestine to look normal even if the villi are in flattened. Did you have positive blood work and was it a complete panel? Hopefully the doc knew what he/she was doing and took more than one biopsy. I hope you get the results soon. -
I don't know if this is worth it for most folks. Do check with your tax pro before going to all the trouble of pricing non-gluten free and gluten free purchased the same day and doing all the calculations needed as well as saving the reciepts. It is written off as a health expense and only available if you are someone who itemizes. It may also set you up...

How Gluten-Free is Your Water?
ravenwoodglass replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
No. Personally that is not something I worry about. Kind of surprised to see this as I thought the FDA had ruled that items naturally gluten free like water, milk and eggs for example couldn't have a gluten free label. -
It can be a tough adjustment at first but you will get through it. She can still be carefree, she just has to be prepared. If she goes to a friends house have her bring snacks that are safe so if she gets hungrey she knows she has safe food. Keep stuff like UDI'S gluten free or Freshetta gluten free pizzas on hand so if her friends are having a pizza party...

Celiac and Type 2 Diabetes Meds
ravenwoodglass replied to HJL122's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
In addition to the great advice you have already gotten I found a book on the glycemic levels of foods to be a bit helpful. I refused Metformin and was told I would be able to use insulin when I needed to use something. Haven't needed anything yet. -
I wouldn't worry too much about the arsenic issue at this point. Just rinse your rice well before you cook it and maybe go with breads like those from the Grainless Baker. Do be sure to stay away from oats for now. Even the certified gluten free ones as some celiacs will react to them the same as they do to gluten grains. Wait till she is well healed before...

Please go to the Coping section and read the Newbie 101 thread. Any amount of gluten is going to keep the antibodies active and you want those reactions to stop. Unfortunately there is a lot to learn but that thread will help. You should start taking care ASAP. Ask any more questions you need and do be sure to have all other family members tested even if...
