  1. On the tax deduction issue, we were overjoyed when I was first diagnosed that we would be able to deduct the extra expense, we had been spending a lot out of pocket even with good insurance. I was diagnosed at the end of the year and started squirreling away those reciepts. However at the end of the next year at tax time we found that our usual 17 grand...
  2. Wegmans. They label everything that is safe and I have never had a CC issue with any of their stuff. Make sure you get a new dedicated toaster and if you plan on doing gluten-free baking it is not a bad idea to get new baking pans, or use tin foil. The other thing I can not do without is my powder free non latex gloves, I buy them by the box at my drugstore...
  3. Hi Belinda, I am glad you have a definate answer on the DH. On the query about how rare it would be for both parents to be celiac, in my families experience it is not rare at all. I have 2 children, the children have natural fathers as different as you can get. My oldest child's natural father is Castillo Spanish, grandparents straight from Spain...
  4. I also have hypermobile joints but it is from something called Ehlers Danlos. You may want to get evaluated to see if that is the root cause of the hypermobility. The main reason to check is because while being hypermobile is not usually a problem for much other than sprains and strains, Ehlers Danlos has other features in the skin and internal organs...
  5. Heinz distilled white vinager is derived from corn but many are not, just the word vinager in a label means it has to be derived from apples. I react to distilled grains the same as I do gluten foods, not all do, so I make sure to call the company to make sure that the grain in the vinager is corn or wood derived and not wheat.
  6. Maybe not but barley malt is a VERY common item in 'natural flavors'. The choice is of course up to the individual but if a company gives a CYA statement IMHO there is a reason for it. Recipes are considered by many companies info that they do not want other companies to have. If they use barley malt as a flavoring they don't need to tell us, they just...
  7. I had severe DH from childhood. I was a constant oozing mess. After going gluten-free it actually took about 2 years for the outbreaks to stop. For me even the smallest amount of CC would cause new blisters or a reactivation of any that had almost healed. This lessened after about 6 months when a light bulb went off in my head ( I didn't have the folks...
  8. There sure is a connection, what you just did here was a very valid way of diagnosing a gluten problem. It is how I was finally diagnosed after a lifetime of misdiagnosis. What you did was a gluten challenge, it was positive and she does have a problem with gluten no matter what the blood tests say.
  9. "It upsets me so much in this forum when newbies are given info that is not necessarily good info. They think the moderators are God and would never give them bad info. Mods are just people like the rest of us. You do not need any special qualifications to be a moderator and quite often, it shows. Too many mods are overbearing and feel their advice is the...
  10. First off I hope RKB will continue to post. He is a knowledgeable person who could actually help a bit in getting other doctors more knowledgeable and I pray that the nasty responses that he has gotten from a few of the folks here do not scare him away again for months. One thing that has not been mentioned in this issue is this- We are now a global...
  11. Although the company states it is gluten free if you go to the companies website they make it clear it isn't. Kyo-Dophilus with Enzymes SUGGESTED USE: Take one capsule for adults (1/2 capsule for children under four) with a meal twice daily. For infants, sprinkle 1/2 capsule in food or juice. Supplement Facts Serving Size ...
  12. To me that is the scariest part of trying to eat processed food, and the reason why I don't anymore. For those of us who suffered under the US health 'care' system for years mostly gluten free is not gluten free enough. What is even more frightening in this country is that most are not aware that any OTC or script med DOES NOT fall under the guidelines...
  13. Just a quick note, thanks so much for the list. They can be quite helpful but I need to add a word of caution. The lists are accurate for the day they are made, product lines change. The reason I mention this is because I called the Oil of Olay company just a week or two ago. They now state that the only skin lotion they make that they now consider gluten...
  14. I hope everything goes well for you both. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
  15. Yes you do need to be concerned. The biggest risks are the toothpastes and the numbing agent they use before they give you novacaine. Meds are not covered under any of the FDA labeling guidelines, and this applies to the dental products they will use also. Good luck, I have not had dental work done since diagnosis that did not make me sick for 3 weeks...
  16. I may have read this and the 2006 version of the same thing wrong but if I am understanding it wheat is of course an allergen and must be listed. The same is not being said for gluten. What they are trying to do, and actually have done now is to define what is gluten free for the purpose of labeling. Not to make companies declare gluten ingredients but...
  17. Yea me too. Then I couldn't figure out why I would get drunk and a hangover from nonalcoholic beer. Duhhh.
  18. I thought it might be helpful to post a link to the most recent guidelines by the FDA for food manufacturors. There are a couple things we celiacs need to note, the most important being that while wheat is considered an allergen gluten is not. Just because wheat is not listed does not make it safe for us. Also take particular note of numbers 16 and 18...
  19. One way to find out is by trying the diet for a few months, very strictly. I had neuro problems since childhood. Was thought for a bit to have MS. After 6 months gluten-free many of the neuro issues had resolved. After 5 years I still have some residual damage that is permanent but have regained the use of my legs and hands. I still tip over a lot but...
  20. Too many I think. My GI doctor said a week or so ago that even the newest testing is still very hit and miss. In addition many doctors will call a low positive a negative. My DH and my DD both had very low positives. The doctor told my DD that she was not celiac yet but was showing changes on the endo, scalloping and changes in the mucosal lining. Then...
  21. Thats why I look for the least processed products available. You can look for the least ingredient yogurt, my Wegmans brand has "pasturized lowfat milk, nonfat milk and pectin" thats it. I just throw some in a blender with a banana and some other fruit. Makes a yogurt smoothie in seconds with all the good bacteria and flavor you could want.
  22. Why, because it is additive and because they want the yogurt thick and creamy.
  23. Thanks for posting this. Hopefully the folks who put so much faith in the FDA will read and absorb.
  24. Have you done a gluten-free trial? Sometimes that is the best way to tell if gluten is a problem. There are a number of folks who are celiac but still have negative blood work, that can delay diagnosis for a long time. A gluten-free trial and challenge may be more informative for you. You don't need a doctors permission to try living gluten-free to see...
