  1. Sounds like your doctor was as stupid as mine was. My periods stopped before I hit forty, I started having hot flashes etc. and asked to be tested to make sure my body had not hit an early menapause. My doctor insisted that it wasn't possible because of my age. To make a long story short it was celiac that caused my reproductive system to shut down, it...
  2. "Snickers is gluten-free? I think you may have just made my day." Yep unless they changed recently. My DD wrote her entrance essay for college on the joys of eating a Snickers bar, she really makes a production of it and the very involved removal of layers she would do in the process. It was a great essay on finding a little bit of joy early in...
  3. You need to be very careful with teas. I only use ones that say gluten free on the label. Celestial Seasonings makes a number of gluten free teas and will label the ones that are gluten-free. Many teas especially herbal and flavored teas are not gluten-free so please make sure they are safe.
  4. I have both. I was diagnosed with diabetes last year during a glutening episode. At that time my doctor stated that it was the autoimmune process that made me diabetic. My blood panels show that I am absorbing nutrients again so it wasn't the malabsrption in my case. I refused drugs and am at this point well controlled by diet. I haven't had a morning...
  5. In addition to the other great advice you have gotten I would like to say also that you don't know for sure what his gluten statis is yet. You may be surprised and find that he should be gluten-free also. After 4 years of gentle proding my supposedly asymptomatic DH was tested, he was, to everyones surprise, gluten intolerant also. His symptoms were very...
  6. Have you checked the ice cream? Many of them are not gluten-free.
  7. First you need to make sure you are really eating gluten free, are you consuming processed foods? If you are then you need to stop for a couple months and choose whole foods that are naturally gluten free. Have you checked all your meds, including OTC meds? Generic scripts can be risky make sure your pharmacist checks everything. Are you drinking alcohol...
  8. Welcome to the boards and the celiac family. The TTG is the newest and of all the tests the one that has the best chance of showing positive for celiac. This was positive for you. You do indeed need to be doing the gluten-free diet. It is not just the gut that is at risk for damage, all organs and the brain can be effected. Read as much as you can...
  9. Well you can look at it this way, now you know for sure and for certain that you don't want to cheat again. The repercussions can be too severe. I hope this is all that happens, with me I would be tied to the bathroom 2 days later and ready to kill everyone in sight, or me. Sometimes experience really is the best teacher. Hope you get over this quickly...
  10. I agree that it is a bit too early with everything else she has had going on. If you can put this off for a bit I would. She has been through a lot lately and IMHO needs some time to heal and relax. I would drop the gluten free crackers and toast for a bit and go with naturally gluten-free foods, things like stews thickened with potato, soups, fruits...
  11. White vinager is often grain derived. It can come from wood or corn also. Just the word vinager, in stuff made in the US is apple cider vinager. I am sensitive to grain derived alcohols and vinagers so I would avoid until I knew for sure what it was from but some seem to have no problem with them.
  12. In the earlier stages especially people will often have C or alternate between C and D. I have wondered if this is the body trying to make up for nutrient malabsorption by hanging on to everything it gets for as long as possible. If you have gluten intolerance or celiac the same area of your intestines that makes B12 and that is responsible for producing...
  13. Short qnd simple, you need to avoid both gluten and casein.
  14. I think your naturopath is right on that one. Celiac or Gluten intolerance is just that an intolerance, it doesn't have a histimine type reaction for most of us. I did not skin test postive for gluten as an allergan but I still have DH, a skin autoimmune reaction instead of a histimine one. The histamine reaction can be fatal short term, the autoimmune...
  15. It sounds like you may have a problem with gluten and that can effect the nerves. Have you been of the gluten-free diet? Do you take sublingual B12, if not get some and start on it. The type of pain you are talking about, escalating burning pain also sounds a lot like a nerve disorder that can set in after even a minor injury. I had it after a knee surgery...
  16. "I just feel so frustrated since both doctors (MacMaster Hospital) and the dietician (Shelley Case) all reinforced how important it is to have the biopsy to be properly diagnosed. Why would neither doctor refer me???" For some reason I manage to double post this when I added a bit on the edit. Sorry about that, It is early and I have not had that first...
  17. "I just feel so frustrated since both doctors (MacMaster Hospital) and the dietician (Shelley Case) all reinforced how important it is to have the biopsy to be properly diagnosed. Why would neither doctor refer me???" Because you did not need one. You should be thankful to these doctors. The 'Gold Standard' is now more of the 'Old Standard', there are...
  18. If you read my signature that kind of says it all. Try the diet, strictly for a bit no matter how the tests come out.
  19. All I can say is I wish we had known sooner with him and the entire family. He struggled so much as a child. He still has some problems as a young adult, but now they are more to do with never having learned how to socialize. He is high functioning, really would be clasified more as an Aspergers type, but most of the members of my family would also fit...
  20. I would, if he doesn't want to do one (and I don't know why he wouldn't) the person to ask next would be your ob-gyn.
  21. I would recommend that you give the diet a try. The blood tests are not infallible. My doctors going off my blood test results delayed my diagnosis for many, many long and painful years. My signature kind of says it all in that department. Up to 20% of us don't show up. I used to suffer from migraines a lot. Even when I didn't have the headache I...
  22. I am glad you now know and can get him feeling better. Having him come on the board is a great idea. I would not even ask him his screen name so he could feel he has the freedom to ask whatever questions he needs to. Having other kids to talk to could help alot. The more responsible he feels for his diet the better he may comply, if that is even an...
  23. Hello and welcome. I also suffered from the type of pain you refered to and like you my doctor attributed it to my extensive diverticuli and left it at that. I also was given antispasmotics along with a host of other meds. Gluten free the pain has disappeared. Didn't happen overnight but it didn't take months either. I saw a big difference within a couple...
  24. If there is a phone number on the jar you can call the company and ask. Many use McCormicks and the Durkee brand. Both companys will label gluten and if it just has the name of the spice(s) on the jar that is all that is in it.
  25. There are enough good gluten free hair dyes on the market so it just makes sense to use one that is. If I use a dye that has gluten, usually wheat germ oil, my hair falls out and I get a rash. I don't use a dye anymore, learning to like the gray streaks, but many do so you might want to post a query on which brands are safe. I used to use a Loreal Product...
