  1. Hi John, I used to have pain in my left side also, left and somewhat lower than the belly button area. I actually had that for years before going gluten-free. Then it took a while after going gluten-free for it to clear up. I figure that is part of the small intestine. I never had an endoscopy or colonoscopy so hard to say what they would have...
  2. Hi Quincy, I used to eat a lot of hummus myself. I have dome several elimination diets over the years and the garbanzo beans were a problem for me. I have tried them a few times since then but no go. Actually I don't eat any kind of beans very often anymore. I always consider beans an experiment now, not something that I expect will be ok for sure...
  3. You might have Hashimoto's thyroiditis. It can cause high and low thyroid hormones, basically fluctuating. There are tests for anti-thyroid antibodies. I don't see how your ear could cause low iron unless it leaks out when you tilt your head sideways? Funny doctor there. It sounds like you have malabsorbtion going on. If you are low on iron then...
  4. Hi Laxgirl, Welcome and welcome some more! There are acutally a whole slew of other auto-immune disease that people with celiac can get. That doesn't mean we will get them, just that the odds are higher for us. Celiac is an auto-immune disease and they like to cluster with other autoimmune diseases. But if you stay strictly gluten-free you...
  5. I eat the Food Should Taste Good chips and have no problem with them. But they do make some chips that are not gluten-free, so watch the ingredients. I only eat the olive chip and sweet potato chips myself, because they are GFCFSF. I think the multigrain chips are just that, and not safe for us. But I avoid soy so may have excluded them for that. ...
  6. Hi Cass, Yay, I don't have any plans to try the P. iodine. Although I saw a story today about a radiation leak at a nuclear plant in Cleveland, Ohio. I wonder why PO. Iodine caused anxiety for you? Maybe it bumped up your thyroid hormone production? Well, I know I have been low on iodine for a while now, because I got some iodized salt and...
  7. Hi Chili, So are your thyroid meds supposed to provide all your iodine needs or a large part or just some or your requirement? I guess the sea salt is not a good source of iodine, they say it has a limited mount of iodine right? Yeah, I can see you are walking a tight rope so to speak.
  8. Hi Cass, Thanks for responding. No wrong answer, just info gathering, trying to understand. So it sounds like you are on a hormone replacement therapy but also do take some iodine via the kelp? sounds like kelp is some pretty potent stuff, or can be. They say it can have a variable amount of iodine. I'll probably get some kelp myself this weekend...
  9. Thanks for replying Rose. I guess I should have mentioned it is a multiple choice poll, so there are no wrong answers. Good point about the symptoms being variable. One size does not fit all with people. Sounds like you would sort of fit the I take a thyroid suplement / hormones option. Too bad I can't spell supplement, oh well. I hadn...
  10. Ok, I started a poll! And I don't even have DH myself, so go figure. But I do have some thyroid issues and I know when I don't get enough iodine in my diet I feel like crapola. I pasted in a list of symptoms from the Mayo Clinic site below. I know when I don't get enough iodine in my diet that I get to feeling pretty lousy. And it seems...
  11. Hi, welcome to you also! Take a look around and ask questions if you want. There is lots of info in the pre-diagnosis forum and the coping with forums. you can use the search option to find threads on topics you want to read about. You can also use the find new content link at the top right of the forums t see threads with new posts.
  12. You can check out this thread on the gluten-free labeling summit next month in DC. Gluten free labeling Summit
  13. I haven't been able to do nightshades. I don't plan to try them anymore for that matter. I do fine without them so not a big issue to me anyway.
  14. Food allergies are different than food intolerances. Allergies are an IgE antibodie reaction. Food intolerances are IgA and IgG reactions, maybe some others too. So asking for food allergy tests won't detect food intolerances. There is no harm in getting both done though. There aren't many food intolerance tests available though. Enterolab does some...
  15. I think some people follow the gluten-free diet because of possible benefits related to autism. I don't think there is a proven link, but some people think it helps to be GFCFSF.
  16. Hi, I used to be a teenager just a few decades or more ago. welcome to the gluten-free world! There is an organization of support groups for celiac kids you could check out called ROCK. They might have a chapter near you. There are other celiac groups also like the CSA (Celiac Sprue Association), NFCA, etc. CSA has chapters around the USA...
  17. Hmm. that's why I haven't had my thyroid removed yet. I am concerned about the meds for it not being gluten-free. There is not guarantee they will make gluten-free thyroid meds available. I know I feel better when I use iodized salt, so my thyroid is still working at least.
  18. Z-Pizza has gluten-free pizza. I am sure there are other chains that have it but I don't remember them at the moment. You can also buy pre-made frozen gluten-free pizza crusts by Kinickinick to make your own pizza. Many gluten-free breads are kept in the freezer section because they usually don't have any preservatives and would go bad too fast on an...
  19. You can ask for a celiac antibodies blood panel. That is one test for celiac. I'd think I'd find a different doctor to do it though. Your doc doesn't sound very interested in solving your problems. The antibodie tests are about 70% accurate so there is a chance of false negatives. So it makes sense to give the gluten-free diet a good 3 to 4 month trials...
  20. Vitamin Shoppe sells a "Digestive Bean Enzyme" that is gluten-free.
  21. I started out in a very happy, warm dark place. Then one day I came out and there was this big bright light. I think that darn light is what triggered my symptoms, but no way to prove it. Darn lights!
  22. 2 and 1/2 weeks is not enough time to tell if you are getting completely better. It could take 6 months just to learn how to do the diet correctly. And it can take longer than that to start feeling "right".
  23. I suggest you search on threads for "elimination diet" and read up on them. Eating multitudes of foods is just too confusing IMHO. Even a food diary can't work wonders. You need to limit the playing field to pick out the winners.
  24. Insurance has come up on the board before. But I never saw a list of companies who would auto decline people based on celiac. Might be a good reason not to get diagnosed.
  25. Ice Cream Maaaaaan! What can we get when the truck comes around? Earplugs?
