  1. https://www.cureceliacdisease.org/faq/what-other-autoimmune-disorders-are-typically-associated-with-those-who-have-celiac-disease/ Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is associated with celiac disease. Your Hashimoto's Thyroiditis may or may not get better on the gluten-free diet. The symptoms from Hashimoto's can overlap in some ways with celiac disease. They...
  2. Yes, absolutely your symptoms can become worse. Some people don't finish the gluten challenge because of the symptoms it causes. We can become sensitive to many foods besides gluten. Until your gut heals and your immune system settles down you will probably continue to have symptoms. Especially if you have developed additional food intolerances. ...
  3. Hi, Yes, celiac disease is often a digestive system condition. Classic celiac destroys the villi that line the small intestine. Those villi produce enzymes that aid digestion. They also absorb nutrients. The villi provide a large surface area for bacteria to inhabit. Bacteria can aid in digestion also or cause GI symptoms if they are the wrong kind...
  4. I live with gluten eaters. I have my own toaster, mini refrig, and silverware. It works. I'd skip the anti-depressants and concentrate on diet changes myself. Too many ingredients spoils the soup? It can be hard to tell what's going on if if you are changing too many things at the same time.
  5. Most people with celiac disease are still undiagnosed today. The celiac disease testing process isn't perfect at this time. People with Dh (dermatitis herpetiformis) may not show up positive on blood antibody tests at first. But the antibodies do appear in the skin. They have celiac disease but are not diagnosed by blood tests but a skin biopsy instead...
  6. Another thing to try is eliminating oats and dairy from your diet. They both can cause problems for some people. Cola type drinks can have phosphoric acid in them. That's a bad thing for stomach linings. You can also try peppermint tea for relief from gas/bloating in the stomach. And Pepto Bismol can help with some symptoms. Zantac has lawsuits...
  7. Hi Kyle, I don't think you'll lose years of life by slip ups here and there. The problem with frequent slip ups is the immune system never gets a chance to completely settle down and stop making antibodies against gluten. Personally i wouldn't trust most restaurants for the first 6 months. It is much safer to trust your own cooking, and generally...
  8. That sounds like a cautious plan and a good approach James. Here's a link with info on Gaviscon. https://www.drugs.com/cdi/gaviscon.html Another thing i can suggest is stopping all cola type soft drinks. They can be hard on the stomach.
  9. You are welcome Tracy. You are not alone there, many people think that celiac is an allergy. Sometimes people with celiac will tell their server at a restaurant that they have a gluten allergy. That is far easier for people to understand than an auto-immune disease, especially people with no medical background like most restaurant workers. The link...
  10. Hi Tracy, Here is an article listing the tests they can do for celiac disease. The usual screening test is the ttg IgA. But there are other tests for different types of antibodies also. Some people's immune systems don't even make IgA antibodies so it is better to get all the different types of antibodies tested. https://celiac.org/about-celiac...
  11. I won't be much help here regarding the recipe. But maybe if it's a cheap stove you could get an oven thermometer and verify the temperature is right.
  12. Right, the corn gluten isn't normally a problem. Gluten generically is the name for a carbohydrate/protein molecule that stores energy in seeds. But the "gluten" we talk about in celiac disease is only the kind on wheat , rye, and barley. And for some of us in oats. I agree it can be confusing to use the same term.
  13. Hi yogajc, Have you tried digestive enzymes and Betaine HCL? Those may help you digest the eggs better.
  14. Hi Vapor, If you are only gluten-free for a few days then continued symptoms is normal. It can take months for symptoms to subside for some people. That doesn't mean you can't try to improve things though! Psyillium husks are a neutral fiber product that can help with bulking up stool. You can buy them plain or in Metamucil etc. Yerba Prima...
  15. Hi, The gallbladder empties it's contents in response to a chemical signal generated by the villi in the small intestine. If the villi are damaged and can't produce that chemical signal the gall bladder doesn't empty normally. Can you say sludge? IMHO that chemical signal being missing is the cause of many celiacs gallbladder issues.
  16. Hi Tiffany, Sometimes they find UBO's (unidentified bright objects) on the brain in ataxia patients. They can show up on an MRI. Dr. Hadjivassiliou Nuerological symptoms without gastro symptoms http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20170845 Another thing to check is vitamin/mineral levels. Nerves are impacted by malabsorption just like...
  17. Hi Dandysam, It sounds like you are on the right track. If he is feeling better gluten-free then there is some kind of problem with gluten in his body. You should think about what you want to do as far as future testing. The usual next step after a positive antibody tests is an endoscopy to take biopsy samples of the small intestine lining. They...
  18. Hi Bailey, You are right, the celiac antibody test are not reliable if you are not eating gluten daily for 6 to 8 weeks before them. The endoscopy can be done after 2 weeks of eating gluten though. So maybe it makes sense to do the endoscopy? You need to eat about a slice of wheat bread or the equivalent daily before testing. Often an endoscopy is...
  19. Since the hubby is around more often I wonder if there is more kissing going on. Gluten mouth could be the culprit? There is also the possibility of additional food intolerances as Trents suggested. Glycoalkalids in potatoes increase permeability of the gut mucosa. That may lead to additional food intolerances developing. Oats are a problem for...
  20. In general I agree! I am not any kind of chemistry expert or biological expert on these things myself. I do think it's good to consider them though. Another impact on intestinal permeabillity is the chemicals we ingest in our food. The article I linked here talks about potato alkaloids increasing gut permeability. So that's another thing to...
  21. There is an edit link at the bottom of the post up to certain number of hours. I think its a 14 hours window that edits are allowed.
  22. OK, I didn't notice this paragraph before. This one says that celiacs trend towards having normal zinc levels but low copper levels. So we screw up the calculations because our opposite copper/zinc ratios cancel out the ratios from IBS people. So the paragraph is saying zinc is a problem for people with IBS but not those with celiac. We are off-balance...
  23. Hi Gerry, Just to try a test, can you try sleeping in a more vertical position? Like with a pillow propping your head/chest up? If the bleeding is caused by a leak in the valve separating your stomach from your esophagus then sleeping more vertically might stop or reduce the issue. Stomach acid leaking past the valve can cause irritation and bleeding...
  24. Hi again Gerry, Coffee ground vomit can be a sign of gallbladder problems I think. Pretty sure I read that somewhere in the past. Gallbladder problems are somewhat common with celiac disease. I have had that before myself but it wasn't persistent. Quite a few people have posted on the forum in the past about having their gallbladders...
  25. Hi Ellis, Good for you going gluten-free. Doctors can be a little clueless at times. T-1 diabetes is associated with celiac disease. I think with any combination of conditions the overlapping symptoms can be confusing. Especially with celiac disease since there are so many possible symptoms related to celiac. You sure sound like you have celiac...
