ARCHIVED New Celiac
GFinDC replied to lil-oly's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Welcome to the forum! If you ate the noodles with soy sauce that was a likely problem. Most soy sauce has gluten in it. But it really does take some time for things to settle down in our GI tracts after going gluten-free. You may find you react to many foods for a while that may or may not have gluten in them. It's a good idea to keep your diet very... -

ARCHIVED Cross-Contamination Worsens After gluten-free?
GFinDC replied to hazelnutty42's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yep, sure seemed like I was more sensitive to gluten after I stopped eating. I am not sure if that was it or I was just noticing the symptoms more. It sure doesn't take much gluten to get our immune systems attention. -
ARCHIVED Help Me Get Started Here.....
GFinDC replied to fetchfelix's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Felix, That's great that your son is doing better! Not growing up eating junk food can't be a bad thing for him IMHO. Your are right, it's really up to us to figure out a healthy diet. The companies selling food are mainly interested in making a profit after all, so they make products lots of people will buy. The companies do respond to consumer... -
ARCHIVED Help Me Get Started Here.....
GFinDC replied to fetchfelix's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Felix, You are welcome for the links. I don't think I or anyone else said it would be easy going gluten-free. Starting the gluten-free diet requires quite an adjustment for some of us. For some the adjustment may be easy. But that doesn't really matter. What matters is how it affects you. All i can tell you is that while it was a rough adjustment... -
ARCHIVED Help Me Get Started Here.....
GFinDC replied to fetchfelix's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Felix, Welcome to the forum! You asked about consequences of not following the gluten-free diet. You are not the first person to think of that idear for some reason, it comes up sorta regularly. I put some links to particularly interesting threads on the idear from the past below. And some links for general knowledge you might like. Celiac... -
ARCHIVED Science To Research On Soy With Eggs And Chicken
GFinDC replied to John Burlingame's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Interesting article John. I wonder if they intend to use research like this to promote the sale of eggs as a healthier version, with enhanced soy isoflavones. Anyway, I think most times if not all times a food or allergy reaction is to a protein in the food or allergen. I don't know if isoflavones are proteins or not. People can develop reactions to most... -

GFinDC replied to Dswaterman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi DS, I can't say I know anything about Crohns/colitis developing as a result of having celiac disease. But some of the same genes are involved in many autoimmune conditions. My younger brother had both Crohn's and celiac disease. I have only celiac, so it isn't something that is 100% linked at all. I think you are kinda getting the cart before... -

ARCHIVED First Time Posting And Desperately Seeking Answers And Support
GFinDC replied to Dswaterman's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Dswaterman, It is somewhat common for people when first going gluten-free to develop more noticeable symptoms as time goes on. The immune system may get more sensitive to gluten, or something else might be going on, like symptoms being more noticeable since they are less frequent. The immune system is pretty serious about keeping us alive. When... -

Hi Ez, I agree with NVS (Nicole). It's really the carbs that are bad for weight gain. If you check out a glycemic index you;ll see that some foods are very much higher than others on the glycemic scale. Those foods are the carbs, sugars, rice, fruits etc. Which means they turn into glucose much faster than meats and fats, which are low glycemic index...

ARCHIVED Updated Information On Washington Dc Restaurants?
GFinDC replied to SMRI's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I didn't find the info about the castle being closed either. Maybe a brain fart there. The natural history is open but the dinosaur hall is closed. They still have some dino bones on display, just not the number they usually have. By the way, the salads are workable. But not cheap! They had fruit in the cafe also. Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Updated Information On Washington Dc Restaurants?
GFinDC replied to SMRI's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Are you sure the Natural History Museum is open? I know the castle building is closed for a while, but it seems like I saw something about work being done on the natural history building too. Best check on that. This Yahoo group is restricted but they would be the best source of restaurant info. They have an online database of reviews. Open Original... -
ARCHIVED Coping With The Isolation And Rage
GFinDC replied to whatever's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi whatever, Welcome to the forum! And you too Knitty Kitty! @Whatever: Someone mentioned getting your vitamin D checked. It would be good to get all your vitamin and mineral levels checked. That way if you are low on something you know what to supplement. Gluten ataxia affects nerves and may heal faster by supplementing vitamin B's. I don... -
Hi Amberzak, Here's a good diabetes forum you might like. The people there often recommend low carb diets. Open Original Shared Link I think Dr. Peter Green's book recommends waiting 6 months after going gluten-free before trying for a baby. ARCHIVED Hormones, Hashi's And Celiac- How Does This All Work Together?
GFinDC replied to icelandgirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Beth, From what I've read, the symptoms in Hashimoto's can swing between hypo and hyper. So the thyroid is not always overactive or underactive. If it was stuck in hyper mode (overactive) I think you are right, they would end up nuking it. It seems like I've read posts on here about people's Hashimoto's stabilizing after going gluten-free. ...- 144 replies

Sounds like Ohio is going to get crowded! Visitors are welcome or maybe a meet-up somewhere. I don't think there really is a Canfield in Ohio though. Sounds like somewhere we toss our empty beers cans on Friday night. Er, well, that's about anywhere we happen to be driving by tho. Ever try to hit a road sign with a beer bottle? That can fill up a...

ARCHIVED Hormones, Hashi's And Celiac- How Does This All Work Together?
GFinDC replied to icelandgirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Beth, They use radioactive Iodine to kill off the thyroid when it is the cause of the disease. Say it's cancerous or overactive from some thyroid disease. Hashimoto's isn't like that. Hashimoto's is when the immune system attacks the thyroid. So it's not the thyroid itself that is the cause of the condition, it's the immune system. Killing off...- 144 replies

Ahh, I'm planning a big move to Ohio to be near my relatives. The wonderful gluten-free island kingdom doesn't seem to have materialized yet, so Ohio it is. I don't know about Kansas tho Crayon. It's kinda close to the Yosemite super-volcano area for my taste. Deep fried celiacs anyone? Plus they have those big-foot things in Colorado I think. Of course...

Sorry ch88, I wasn't trying to imply you were schizo. The point I was trying to make is that it is known that gluten can affect some people's brains. The affects are various. This isn't an area that has had a lot of research, so there may be many unknowns still. My thinking on it is simple. If gluten can affect a persons walking ability and muscle coordination...
