ARCHIVED I'm back After Being Gone For Awhile
GFinDC replied to txplowgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome back TXplowgirl! It's a great day to kick off a new gluten-free diet ! I hope you have much improved health in this new year! -
ARCHIVED Please allow me to introduce myself....
GFinDC replied to Toxic Glutension's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Toxic (Ian), Symptoms and reactions do vary a lot between people. It's been quite a while since I glutened myself, but I used to get a stomach gas in about 30-45 minutes with a belch that had a distinctive (to me) smell. I always recognized it meant I had gotten into some gluten. Then several days of constipation followed by diahrea. The fun continued... -
ARCHIVED Really confused about having or not celiac, confusing symptoms
GFinDC replied to Frankie13's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Frankie, You might be having an allergic reaction to wheat or something else you are eating. I am thinking that because you said your throat hurts when eating bread? Allergic reactions can occur fairly quickly, as compared to celiac reactions which are somewhat slower. So that might be something to ask your doctor to test you for. -
Merry Christmas Bartful and and everyone else too!

ARCHIVED Dr. refuses to order tTg and DGP
GFinDC replied to manasota's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Manasota, Since the Xifaxan is an antibiotic, you may need some probiotics to re-establish your gut flora. Hopefully the doctor recommended some. Have you tried cutting out dairy for a while? It may be a problem. -
ARCHIVED Cost of celiac gene test
GFinDC replied to lolabelle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your doctor should be able to to you the cost of the test. He/she is basically selling you a service and is obligated to reveal the price of that service. I agree, having the high blood antibodies means she has celiac disease. Some doctors also order an endoscopy with biopsy samples of the small intestine. Some accept only the antibody results as... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free is my last hope. Any help, suggestions welcome!
GFinDC replied to Forman337's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome to the group Forman! Your story is, regrettably, very similar to many of us. Doctors are often slow to test for celiac disease. It can take years for people to get diagnosed. Mostly because doctors won't test for the condition. Anyhow, once you go gluten-free, the antibodies in your body start to decline, and then it is too late to test... -
ARCHIVED Lab Results back...(Re: Numbness, Tingling, etc.)
GFinDC replied to Ender's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Ender, I am not saying you have it, but gluten ataxia can cause symptoms similar to yours. You could ask your nuerologist to check you for it. One of the indicators is something called UBO's (unidentified bright objects) on the brain. I'm not making this up! Anyway, gluten ataxia attacks the nervous system, so it can cause numbness and difficulty... -
ARCHIVED (Barely) Living With Celiac and T1 Diabetes
GFinDC replied to Mary Kate's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi MK, Welcome to the group! It sounds like you are ready to make some changes to improve your situation. That's a good thing! I think sometimes people new to the gluten-free diet think it is a pretty tough thing to do. But it really is (or can be), a very healthy and satisfying diet. And it a diet you can get used to just like you got used to...- 3 replies

ARCHIVED genetic tests
GFinDC replied to CherylS's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Cheryl, Since you are still in the testing phase, be sure to keep eating gluten for now. The antibodies that cause celiac damage decline after we stop eating gluten and are harder or impossible to detect after a while. The IgA antibodies (DH) are deposited in the skin and blood tests don't include skin samples. That's why they take a sample of... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Night Vision
GFinDC replied to PCB's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi PCB, You sure have a mystery symptom there. Some other things that might change with the seasons, perhaps switching from drinking tea to coffee, or maybe eating less soup in warm months? Since your symptoms vary with the seasons it sure seems like they could be related to allergies. I think if you read up on birch allergy you'll find that some...- 50 replies

ARCHIVED Foods For My Friend To Eat To Gain Weight
GFinDC replied to Mattjw's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Matt, She should read the newbie 101 thread at the top of the forums. It has some advice that can help beginners. The biggest thing is to avoid eating even tiny amounts of gluten. The celiac reaction is auto-immune and it only takes a very small amount of gluten to kick off the reaction. The gut can't heal while the immune reaction is ongoing.... -
ARCHIVED Maybe It's Crohn's And Not Celiac?
GFinDC replied to girlulu's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, My younger brother had both Crohn's and celiac disease. So it's possible to have both conditions. If you read some of the Crohn's forums people sometimes follow the gluten-free diet for Crohn's. Some find it helpful, others don't. I wouldn't rule out taking drugs for Crohn's myself. From what I understand, sometimes people take a drug until they... -
ARCHIVED Joint Pain
GFinDC replied to em.watson's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, You could try giving up nightshades for a while and see if that helps your joint pain. A few months ought to be enough of a test to tell. -
ARCHIVED Is There An Easier Way Than Riding It Out?
GFinDC replied to Patt's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
When you go to the doctor is up to you Patt. Only you can decide if your symptoms are serious enough for a doctor's visit. -
ARCHIVED Diagnosed With Celiac But No Symptoms?
GFinDC replied to elena123's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yep, silent celiac disease has no gut symptoms. But that doesn't mean it isn't doing damage. -
ARCHIVED Is There An Easier Way Than Riding It Out?
GFinDC replied to Patt's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Not a total fix, but Pepto Bismol may help some with glutening symptoms. Peppermint tea can help with getting gas out. Aspirin may help with pain. Avoidance is the best medicine tho. -
Hi Beth, I don't remember if you had done an elimination diet? Even if you have, it might be a good idea to try another one. Gluten isn't the only food that can make us sick. We can develop reactions to many different foods. Another thing to try might be eating Brazil nuts. Someone suggested that to me a while back and it helped my energy levels...

ARCHIVED Recovery Time For 15 Month Old
GFinDC replied to shorebird's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If he has pain and rectal bleeding from eating gluten now, it won't change that if he is diagnosed with celiac. The only treatment for celiac disease is total gluten avoidance, which you are already doing for him. Maybe it would be better to wait until he has grown some and is a little older before trying a gluten challenge and diagnosis for celiac. -
ARCHIVED If You Are Dairy Intolerant, What Are Your Symptoms?
GFinDC replied to CeliacMommaX2's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Her symptoms may not disappear in just a few days. It depends on what the situation in her gut is to begin with, and also what kind of reaction she is having. If her gut is inflamed and irritated by something other than dairy, the symptoms may not change at all. Or if the problem is dairy and some other food also, eliminating just one of the irritants... -
Connection Between Grapes And Gluten?
GFinDC replied to Flyingmango's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I react to grapes also, but not like i react to gluten. I get more of an allergic type reaction. One idea about other food intolerances we develop is that the prolonged gut irritation can somehow cause the body to develop reactions to other foods besides gluten. That could be why some people on the forum have many additional food intolerances listed in... -
ARCHIVED Do The Challenge Symptoms Ever Ease Up? Just Need Support :(
GFinDC replied to littleburgy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You could ask your doctor to suggest something to soothe your GI system. Over here in the states I'd say try some Pepto Bismol but I don't know if they have Pepto or something like it in your neck of the woods. -
ARCHIVED Please Help - Fistula - Gluten Sensitivity
GFinDC replied to SMS123's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi, Fistulas can happen sometimes in Crohns patients. The fact that you had symptom reduction on a gluten-free diet is good to know. Some people with Crohns go gluten-free and have improvements. It is possible to have both celiac disease and Crohns at the same time. There are some tests for food intolerances, but not many. Sometimes the best test... -
ARCHIVED Chef That Wants To Borrow Your Shoes...i'm Taking A Walk
GFinDC replied to allergiescooked's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
It's pretty neat that you are willing to try and learn about our situation. Here's some background info for you and threads that might be interesting. You "DO NOT" have to read all this stuff! I made a list of tips for gluten-free beginners a while back. Here they are: Some starting the gluten-free diet tips for the first 6 months for interest... -
ARCHIVED Low Energy And Feeling Depressed
GFinDC replied to hannahs's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Hannah, I agree with everything said before. Some real good advice there. One thing that helped me a lot with fatigue was taking selenium. I had been taking vitamin pills but they didn't have any selenium in them. Some people suggested eating Brazil nuts (high selenium) once in a while and that helped a lot. Another thing that helped was making...
