GFinDC replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
Open Original Shared Link This is a link to the USPSTF page on celiac screening. It says the recommendation is still in draft until 30- May-16. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- " Draft Recommendation Statement Importance Celiac disease is a... -
ARCHIVED Will my doctor test me? So many symptoms...
GFinDC replied to iwillmoveamountain's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yep, get tested for celiac. You have plenty of digestive symptoms to indicate it. -
Hi Richie, It definitely sounds like you got glutened. Over here in the USA they can't label foods gluten-free if they are made from gluten ingredients, period. So your barley drink would not be labeled gluten-free here. A while back I read something about the testing for gluten in foods not being as accurate for detecting barley hordein as it is...

Hi Nelly, Do you know why you are hypothyroid? Some people with celiac disease also have Hashimoto's thyroiditis, which is an auto-immune attack on the thyroid. They can test you for Hashimoto's thyroid antibodies. Celiac disease irritates/damages the lining of the small intestine. Food protein particles may get in the blood stream and that...

Hi Nelly, I agree with the previous posters. Something else you can try is an elimination diet. Nightshades may by a cause of joint pain. You could stop eating them for a couple months to see if there is an improvement.

ARCHIVED Confused
GFinDC replied to krikrogus's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think the usual thing is to be on a gluten diet for 12 weeks prior to testing. But you might find an answer here: Open Original Shared Link Celiac can impact any area of the body, including the brain. There is a thread on the forum somewhere about anger, quick temper, depression talking about effects on people. There is also gluten ataxia, which... -
Yerba Mate has some caffeine in it. It doesn't taste the same as coffee though.

ARCHIVED Are these all celiac symptoms?
GFinDC replied to oli97's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Nightshades can cause joint pain in some people. You could go ahead and eliminate them now. They don't affect the celiac testing. -
ARCHIVED Diabetic Diet Choices & Gluten Free
GFinDC replied to zenjess1980's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi Jessica, I am not sure what you mean by other good options. Other good options for what? -
I agree, it is best to get tested before going gluten-free. It's a lifetime condition and that may end up being quite a while after all. Sometimes we talk about gluten withdrawal on the forum. You could look up some threads on that. I expect many people do go through an adjustment period after going gluten-free. Breaking the habit of eating some...

ARCHIVED 5 year old's TTG level not going down- 1 year gluten free
GFinDC replied to CeliacMommaX2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Some people react to oats also,. Last I checked they say it is small percentage of celiacs who react to them but react they do. Have you checked all medications and pills for gluten? Drinks like tea etc? -
ARCHIVED Chocolate Makes Me Depressed!
GFinDC replied to covsooze's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Welcome tmarshl, You might want to try carob powder as a replacement for chocolate. It is not exactly the same taste but somewhat similar. Most mass produced chocolate has soy and milk in it anyway. Both are top 8 allergens. -
ARCHIVED Face, arm leg weakness. Neurological symptoms of celiac?
GFinDC replied to Dominika's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Dominka, You might be having symptoms of gluten ataxia. It would be a good idea to read up on it. Lack of B-vitamins are another possibility as previously mentioned. It's definitely a good idea to see a doctor. I suggest you write down your symptoms before going to the doctor. -
ARCHIVED A lifetime of eating gluten...
GFinDC replied to zenjess1980's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Jess, You aren't the only poster who started the gluten-free diet and then went off it and realized that was a mistake. One poor woman came back to tell her tale 5 years after starting gluten again. She had to be rushed to the emergency room for a emergency gut surgery. She sprung a leak basically. Celiac disease is still one of those conditions... -
ARCHIVED Day #1 Gluten Free: Hungry and Exhausted
GFinDC replied to zenjess1980's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep, go ahead and eat. The gluten-free diet is not a weight loss diet, it is a medical diet. I was hungry after first going gluten-free also. There is no harm in eating extra food beyond your norm if your body needs the nutrition to heal. It's good to avoid carbs and sugars though, and probably dairy for many people. Your new diet should be mostly whole... -
ARCHIVED Peanut butter and Celiac
GFinDC replied to lea01's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I assume you are eating a peanut butter without soy in it? Most of the peanut butter brands have soy oil in them in the USA, unless you get an organic or natural version. An easy test is to eliminate all peanuts for a few days until your symptoms subside. Then eat some plain peanuts and see what happens. If you have symptoms from plain old peanuts... -
Hi Lisa, If I read right, you are dealing with: some kind of arthritis ( a spot of it ) possibly dermatitis herpetiformis (celiac associated skin rash) Raynauds Syndrome perimenopause, possibly. celiac disease I can see where the symptoms for these different ailments could be a little tough to separate for the doctor. If...

ARCHIVED Help!! Don't believe GI doctor
GFinDC replied to Caparici's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The ttg being low does not prove you don't have celiac disease. You could be one of the 2% that don't test positive on ttg-IgA but still have celiac disease. The DGP tests are very specific to celiac disease reactions and IMHO I think they mean you have celiac. Those immune reactions are not high for no reason. Some doctors won't diagnose without endoscopic... -
ARCHIVED Secondary food intolerances due to gluten
GFinDC replied to 1398-Days's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hi 1398days, The reaction being that fast may indicate an allergy. I don't know how common among celiacs but eggs are one of the leading allergens in the USA. There have been other posters on the forum with egg reactions. Some of the common foods that cause reactions among forum posters seem to be soy, corn, and nightshades. I am sure there are... -
ARCHIVED Should I get tested for Celiac Disease?
GFinDC replied to mlec's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think that's a wise choice mlec. Those low vitamin levels have to mean something. Quest Diagnostics does celiac testing, but I think a doctor has to order the tests. I think there's another lab that does testing where anyone can order the antibody tests, but I don't remember the name of it. -
ARCHIVED Should I get tested for Celiac Disease?
GFinDC replied to mlec's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Mlec, Yes, it sounds like you could have celiac disease. As you are aware, symptoms don't have to be GI related, but can appear in other areas of the body like the rash you described. Antibodies can also attack the nerves, joints, skin, thyroid, brain, etc. Really, celiac symptoms can affect any area of the body, because nutrition affects the whole... -
ARCHIVED Gluten free and still not feeling "normal"
GFinDC replied to Holleychica's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Good responses from the commenters. Holleychica hasn't been back to the forum since starting this thread on 22-Mar-16, so you may not get a response from her. If you hover your mouse over a person's username after a few seconds a popup will show some info on the user, like their last visit to the forum. This isn't real unusual, for someone to start a thread... -

Agree with Cycles, severe headaches are a good reason to visit a doctor. That being said, celiac can affect the brain. So it may be related. If it is a celiac reaction, it would be good to really make a serious effort to avoid gluten. It only takes a tiny amount of gluten to cause the immune reaction, and the immune reaction can continue for weeks or...

GFinDC replied to Scott Adams's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Ok, Thanks Karen, I see what you mean. I didn't realize you had to click the headings to get the readings. I still think it's a count of beers drunk tho not posts.
