ARCHIVED New To Gluten Free And Struggling With Other DiseasesTakala replied to Andi P's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease Oh, ouch. So young. Google is your friend for finding shopping sources for gluten free. Put gluten free name of thing you're looking for, such as - gluten free grocery Jasper Canada - in the search box to see what comes up. Shop around the grocery store perimeter and go with whole, natural, unprocessed foods as much as possible.

ARCHIVED I Had Hoped To Never Return To This PlaceTakala replied to zus888's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease ______ And you need those hormones to preserve your post-menopausal bones, which already can be challenged by celiac damage. Otherwise, minus the ovaries, you'd end up on hormone replacement therapy, and the imitation is never as good as the original, plus, the artificial form of progesterone is a notorious but little known depressant (as is birth control...

Multiple bad experiences, specifically with the chai and regular teas, or otherwise I wouldn't be talking about it. Drinking something bad that can give me a migraine when I am far from home and towing a trailer or driving in challenging winter weather conditions can incapacitate me so I cannot drive. Drinking mixed beverages at Starbucks is playing roulette...

ARCHIVED Strange Occurances W/ Nuts?Takala replied to josh052980's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease I became sensitive to cashews years after going gluten free. Not sure if it is cc or to the cashews, but they just go thru me too fast. And this is a bummer because I like them and they are in a lot of the Lara bars flavors now. So I looked up what family of plants these things are from, and they are related to.... drumroll..... poison ivy. How...

Certain flavors of Tazo brand tea contain gluten and are not safe. I gave up on Starbucks when I was handed the wrong flavor of tea and carried the cup out to the car.... Fortunately I have a fairly good sense of smell and the "plain" tea was wafting an herbal odor, so I took the lid off for another good sniff before tasting it, and it was definitely flavored...

ARCHIVED Reaction To Buddig Lunch Meats...or?Takala replied to Seante Wilson's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications I have had the same problem but my "glutened" reactions are slightly different from other celiacs/gluten intolerants, and sometimes this causes me to hesitate to claim a reaction, but this one I can prove (for me) because I did a really strict elimination and reinto several times and it was always the turkey lunchmeat. It makes my joints puff up, and...

ARCHIVED New Laws In Uk = Stupid ?Takala replied to tennisman's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease I believe we had some joker, er, "scientist," propose something like this (low gluten labels) for the United States, and they were serious. Wheeee! American Exceptionalism! You so do not want this particular contemporary version of the U.S. House passing any food labeling legislation. Their version of a new and improved school lunch program...

ARCHIVED How Do You Mentally Cope With Celiac?Takala replied to mtdewpeg's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease Is there any hope for you? Yes. Once you get used to eating differently, it's no big deal. Keeping busy doing other things is the best coping mechanism.

It's more of a "control" issue than that of having an "official" diagnosis.... you just have to deal with your mother not respecting your wishes on how you want your children to be fed, period. The "eczema" you are describing could more likely be DH, the rash that goes along with some forms of celiac. Doctors, especially the celebrity types on cable...

ARCHIVED If You Miss Tagalongs Or Kandy KakesTakala replied to lpellegr's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips LOL. I have been known to put peanut butter and chocolate chips on a gluten-free pancake when I just have to have something like this.

ARCHIVED Can You Grind Rice, Or Beans In Coffee Grinder?Takala replied to Simona19's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips They are great for grinding buckwheat if you use any of that.

Eating more sugar and refined carbohydrates will make this condition worse, stimulating a spike, crash, and burn blood sugar cycle, over and over again. Eat more unrefined foods, including good fats and vegetables and fresh fruits. Fats such as coconut milk and from nuts, eggs, avocados, olive oil are slow burning fuel. Fiber from vegetables slows everything...

ARCHIVED Wish I Knew What Got Me Xmas EveTakala replied to birdie22's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease If you purchased a "pre- stuffed" bird there is no way that it was prepared in a manner that was cognizant of the risks of cross contamination for people trying to avoid gluten UNLESS it came from a gluten free restaurant or facility... sorry. It could have been anything in that ingredient list because you do NOT know how it was processed and handled before...

The longer one is off of gluten, if one is celiac or gluten intolerant, the more likely one is more sensitive to it. People who start out not reacting to "casual" levels of cross contamination, may be in for a big surprise a few years down the line of a gluten free diet. On "tiny" amounts: You can't even see viruses that cause the common cold or flu...

ARCHIVED FDA researching gluten in drugs to help celiac disease patients - In-PharmaTechnologist.comTakala replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity At least get it the *&^%$#@ bleeping **** out of the thyroid medications, and have it be labeled as an ingredient on the other prescription drugs and over the counter ones, if it is present. Of course, with this FDA, it could now start off yet another 7 year commentary period of contemplation....

ARCHIVED Need Help Settling A Gluten DisagreementTakala replied to sariesue's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease Rolls are.... not rolls. I can't eat some of the common ingredients in gluten free baking, and neither can other people. What I can eat are common allergens for others. If the tables were turned, and this was fed to somebody with an allergy or intolerance, and you tried passing these gluten-free rolls off to somebody expecting a wheat bun, without dairy...

ARCHIVED Well-Meaning People Who Are Always Pushing Food!Takala replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease I would not expect them to "get" it unless they had personal (or family member) experience with either food allergies or restaurant cooking and preferably both. Anyway, I don't eat other people's food in potluck/social situations because of this and anyone who knows me knows it, it's a non negotiable item. At this time of year I'm actually more concerned...

ARCHIVED I Think My Dog Has Celiac!Takala replied to pain*in*my*gut's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease ____________ Dick Patton's Natural Balance makes several different combinations of dog and cat foods with limited ingredients, some of which are grainless because they are made with potatoes as the starch. This is what we feed here, so my dog with allergies does not get cross contaminated. It's not cheap, but they eat much less of it by volume because...

ARCHIVED So, This Week Will Be Interesting...Takala replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Other than the spinal stenosis, bone loss, fibroids& cysts, recurring kidney infections and holes in my brain, I never had a test saying there was "a gluten problem."
