  1. Oh, it's from "EmpowHer"........ catch the ending Proof that you can have a Phd, and still be capable of drawing an erroneous conclusion after writing a lousy article. The article links at the bottom go to other recently written articles on Gluten Sensitivity and Celiac with gemstones such as this one:
  2. I can help you with California besides the Outback Steakhouse and PF Chang's Chinese, there's : Truckee, California, near Lake Tahoe - has the Drunken Monkey, a fantastic Sushi place with a gluten free menu. Google their facebook page for hours. Be sure to ask for the gluten free soy sauce, just in case. that's the only glitch we've had there...
  3. Real food tasters tend to chew and then spit it out. Seriously, if you're testing recipes, you try them out on the glutenoids. Most normal cake is dominated by the overwhelming frosting, anyway. I believe this is to cover up the lack of quality of the cake it is supposed to be framing. If you can't make a decent gluten free frosting, well...
  4. I would not go unless I had plans set up for me to be able to handle all my own food needs. I would suggest you rent a car at the airport. No, I insist that you rent a car at the destination airport. And then you go to the store you've already researched on google, once you get there, and you pick up what ever else food you need. You will not be able...
  5. __________ Have you checked to make sure that your thyroid medication is also gluten free ? Keep exercising anyway. It's more important to be in better physical condition, no matter what your size. It also boosts the mood. My guess is that the gluten intolerance/celiac has contributed not only to your thyroid problems, but to your being...
  6. I purchased the hand mortar at a kitchen store. A lot of people will use them to grind their own spice mixes up. You should be able to find one because this was imported from Asia. Try googling kitchen supply store hand mortar and you could probably mail order it. A magic bullet should work. I bought a little electric grinder for coffee/spices...
  7. Buckwheat Pancakes or Flatbread - and bonus, requires no egg, dairy, nor gum ! dry: 1 heaping tablespoon of buckwheat flour (I grind roasted kasha buckwheat in a hand mortar, tastes even better) 1 heaping tablespoon of potato starch 1 heaping tablespoon of garbanzo bean (chickpea) flour pinch of cream of tartar big pinch, about a 1/4 teaspoon...
  8. Ah, thanks!

Phew! Peter left me a comment two months ago about locking a thread where I put a bunch of links about an otc drug recall, and I still haven't figured out how to get the little notification box off the front page when I open it ..... I thought uh oh, now what did I do ?! lol was it the Pamela's clone mix recipe, hah!

  9. I am going to be blunt with you. I've already outlived one parent by ten years who died of liver failure. And I'm "sero - negative." I will never be diagnosed "officially" as a celiac. I currently have a PCP which acknowledges I am unofficially gluten intolerant. I went off grains about 8 years ago, and slowly reintroduced some of them (other than...
  10. I will do the same thing with some of the gluten free commercially baked goods. This is one of the reasons why I tend to make my own a lot. For me, it seems to be tapioca that makes me puff up, or perhaps the zanthan gum or guar gum. Soy, also. It gets my feet and ankles the worst. A way to test this is to repeatedly make the bun-in-a-cup microwave...
  11. Just want to say I appreciate so many of your helpful posts on the board!! Cheers, IH

  12. It's like termite damage to your house's foundation and inner support structure. By the time you can see it, it's massive. You can cheat, but chances are that you will feel so miserable when you do so, after being off of gluten for awhile, that you will not want to. The mindset of you supposedly can't resist something is a combination of lack of experience...
  13. The calorie count is off. An apple, pear, banana, lemon are going to be about 400 calories divided by 2 = 200, the vegetables are maybe another 100 total div by 2 = 50, so about 250 calories a serving.
  14. Only 731 calories per brownie......
  15. This is under the same FDA that can't give this country a gluten free labeling standard, and under the same United States medical - industrial complex that can't diagnose people and if they do, they are still allowed to discriminate against them, right ? If there is any way to screw this up so it would not work for me and cause dreadful side effects, they...
  16. .... And So Begins the Initiation Ritual. A. Yes, but it will take a few months for the ways of the glutenous to fade from the memory of the taste buds. Commercial mixes are usually made of the common ingredients that are less expensive and less likely to cause other allergic reactions, such as rice, potato, tapioca, cornstarch. But they take...
  17. It's safest to pack your own gluten free food along, especially with kids. You can also pack along food for other people. Most people will eat anything that is small, round, and has frosting on it if they are not allergic to the ingredients. We are having this funny discussion right now with a wedding reception plan - the people who invited...
  18. Oh, statistics say that you probably did have patients with celiac disease, but it was undiagnosed. Quite the "supervisor" you have there. When I had day surgery a few years ago they all seemed to "get it" on the surgical side of things, but I had my spouse come to guard me, and I told him under no circumstances whatsoever was I to be given...
  19. Can you make your home gluten free ? If it's not in the house, it's less temptation. (altho some of us have enough aversion from what we feel like when gluten is consumed, it is a built in auto- motivator.) Agree with the reward yourself with a gluten free treat idea. I don't "diet" for weight, but for health and happiness. You may find you just need...
  20. Your First Gluten Free Loaf Attempt Q. "....was just wondering do you have to freeze it ?" A. This will depend on how it comes out. Are you planning to pass it around the holidays, immortal, like a fruitcake ? Q. "Can you leave it out in a bag." A. Heavens, no! You must hide it. Otherwise, someone else will either eat...
  21. My husband eats gluten free at home, he did this voluntarily. He eats lunches out at work that are not, and sometimes at a restaurant he will order regular food, but he tends to order off the gluten free menu if they have it. However, if he and I are eating the same meals at home, I have to be careful to carb- load him if we are going to be doing some...
  22. I won't cook on non stick on the stove top. That stuff, when overheated, gives off fumes that can kill pet birds ! I wish I could more easily find not coated with non- stick cake and bread tins, etc, I've got some cheap - *** ones from China, that the coating CAME OFF ON THE LOAVES OF BREAD when I took them out of the pan - disgusting ! Plus non...
  23. You may be the self proclaimed "world's worst cook" right now, but you must be good at other things, and if you apply yourself the same way to minimalist food preparation procedure, you should be able to come up with something edible gluten free. I would suggest that you google "gluten free xxxx health food store" with xxxx = the name of your town...
  24. I use extra virgin olive oil the most.
