Help with bloodwork numbers
Scott Adams replied to CdnAmy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Here is more info about how to do a gluten challenge for a celiac disease blood panel, or for an endoscopy: and this recent study recommends 4-6 slices of wheat bread per day: -
Technically wheat straw fiber is gluten-free, but I suppose it might be possible that kernels could get mixed into the straw during the process, but it seem like this would not be enough to trigger celiac disease, but I'll reach out to the companies to see what they say about their products.

Questions about Test Results

This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.): -

DH reaction to rice or rice flour?
Scott Adams replied to Maureen Haley's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Is your fiancé newly diagnosed, or has she been gluten-free for a while? -
Thanks, you mentioned your 5 year old with ttg iga > 250, so I assume they made the diagnosis based on their level being over 10x the cut off for positive. As for your daughter, to me it's very likely that she also has it based on her positive test results, and especially the fact that her brother also has it, and it apparently runs in your family...

Welcome to the forum. Could you provide the reference ranges for the blood tests you shared? Each lab is different in how they run such tests. In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTG-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease. According...

Clearly the message for those going to Dubai would be to make sure all food brought on a plane is factory sealed, which is a very odd requirement, but perhaps they have additional security concerns there. This should still be possible, and would be a better option than trying to rely of a safe airline meal.

weak positive for celiacs
Scott Adams replied to DaniMarie S's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm not a doctor, but the blood tests indicate that there is a high possibility of celiac disease so it's best to do all of the testing. Just be sure your child eats a good amount of gluten daily until testing is completed. See the article I shared for more details about what the blood test results mean. -
Glutened Twice in 2 weeks, still very sick

Welcome to the forum! Do you drink coffee with food? I also drink coffee and can't imagine life without it, but I found that I can't drink it on an empty stomach. It's difficult to say how long the symptoms of your recent glutenings will continue, but here are some natural, gluten-free options that may help alleviate symptoms: Plain Rice... -
eye vitamins
Scott Adams replied to Beecee's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I still doubt there would be gluten contamination in vitamins, but if you can find a similar version of eye vitamins that have "gluten-free" on the label, then it's best to go with that option. -
weak positive for celiacs
Scott Adams replied to DaniMarie S's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
So it looks like your child has two weak positive test results for celiac disease, and they have a normal IgA level, which means that the tests are accurate (low IgA can cause false negative, or lower than normal IgA antibody test results). Was your child eating at least 2 slices of wheat bread worth of gluten daily for 6-8 weeks before the blood test... -

eye vitamins
Scott Adams replied to Beecee's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It's highly doubtful that eye drops made by Bausch & Lomb would be contaminated by gluten. For many reasons, including the recent 4 deaths from sepsis, 14 cases of vision loss and more than 80 infections were reported as of May caused by contaminated eye drops, it's very important that nothing--not even bacteria--contaminate eye drops during the manufacturing... -
Traveling to Tanzania on safari
Scott Adams replied to Heather E's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
The trip sounds amazing! It's wonderful to hear that everything went well with your daughters' gluten-free diet while undertaking such a complex journey. I think too many people with celiac disease don't travel at all, or don't travel enough, simply due to fears surrounding their diets. We've been doing more travel articles to encourage others with celiac... -
Going gluten free with kids
Scott Adams replied to RachelParker's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My kids are both gluten-free now, and seem to be doing a better job of sticking to a gluten-free diet. When they were younger both of my kids had issues with cheating on their diets to fit in at school, or fit in with their friends when hanging out with them, especially when they were traveling for soccer games or spending the night at a friend's house. ... -
In some people with celiac disease it can take a long time for tTg levels to normalize, even if the are 100% gluten-free. This study indicates that a majority of celiacs don't recover until 5 years after diagnosis and starting a gluten-free diet: Mucosal recovery and mortality in adults with celiac disease after treatment with a gluten-free diet However...

ANA positive - Celiac and aspirin therapy
Scott Adams replied to Painful5's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Certainly discuss everything with your doctor, and follow their advice, but yes, I'd take aspirin over steroids any day! -
I think you missed the part about the sandwiches... 😉 Given your additional dietary restrictions it would be even more important for you to bring your own food on a flight.

weak positive for celiacs
Scott Adams replied to DaniMarie S's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Can you provide the various test results along with the reference ranges? Different labs use different ranges. A weak positive is still a positive, so it's possible your child may have celiac disease. Were they eating gluten daily for 6-8 weeks leading up to the test? This article might be helpful. It breaks down each type of test, and what... -
ANA positive - Celiac and aspirin therapy
Scott Adams replied to Painful5's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I take baby aspirin daily per my doctor's recommendation due to a family history of heart disease. If your doctor recommends it during pregnancy you should likely follow their advice, provided you can tolerate it. I take it directly after a full meal, and haven't had any stomach issues.
