ARCHIVED Bloating/gas
SGWhiskers replied to twe0708's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've been gluten-free for over a year now. Recently, I experimented with the Paleo diet at the recommendation of my Rhumatologist. Bloating/gas was never something I considered bothersome and even before going gluten-free, I had relatively few digestive complaints. Well, after 2 weeks of the Paleo diet, my stomach was as flat as when I was a teen and my hubby... -
ARCHIVED Cross Contamination In My Kitchen.
SGWhiskers replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thank you for the reality check. I would be curious about the realities of other shared kitchens. My major anxiety and his major adjustment are over. This is more about fine tuning. We like to have a cup of tea and watch TV in bed at night, and a snack sometimes goes with that. He pouts when I tell him he can't eat that snack in bed, but he listens. He... -
I'm in need of some second opinions. Hubby and I have fallen into a nice little routine of managind a gluten lite household. I cook all gluten free. He has bread, occassional cereals, and occassional pre-made gluten snacks. He went gluten free for several months, and then we agreed to let a little back if it was well managed. I have some concerns about the...

ARCHIVED Dealing With Family That Wont Except What I Can't Eat Gluten
SGWhiskers replied to Cari Lyn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I typically bring my own food similar to what is being served, but in situations where I am comfortable eating the same as the group, I serve myself onto a plastic wrapped plate tucked discretely in the corner of the kitchen as each dish is prepared. For example, if Aunt Franny is making green bean cassarole, I grab a spoonful of beans onto my plate before... -
Quick and Cheap Nachos 1 can refried beans 1 can black olives (drain) 1 can diced tomatoes (only use 1/4 can if your tummy is upset with acid these days) Cheese (if you can) (nacho cheese dip would be easy but pricier) Cumin (the spice used in mexican food. Well worth the price of a cheap McCormicks bottle for taco, chili, and chicken). (flavorful...

No neuro symptoms what so ever. Belly gurgles stopped and I think I'm home free. I wouldn't EVER let hubby put my food on the regular temp side of the grill, but it looks like the infra-red side gets hot enough to char away the gluten. I'm pretty excited to have that charred taste back to my meat. Replacing the grates is a great idea for the other...

After having success at a couple of restaraunts with gluten free foods prepared on the grill, I decided to give it a try at home. We have an infra-red side to our grill that gets to like 900 degrees and the grates look like ash not charcoal. Hubby wiped the ashes off and the steak went on without foil for the first time in a year. While bread has been...

ARCHIVED Went To The Grocery Store... And Kissed My Hubby...
SGWhiskers replied to amberlynn's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm guessing the kiss is the culprit, but I most definately get sick at the grocery store. I have to avoid certain areas and days/times to avoid airborne flour. I also get sick when I'm around certain foods being served at the hospital where I work. (stuffing almost triggered a full gluten reaction one night) most of the time, it is just a few hours of discomfort... -
ARCHIVED Nestle's Hot Cocoa Mix
SGWhiskers replied to Ahorsesoul's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You can also add a splash of vanilla to a bunch of sugar, mix very well and then add the right amount of chocolate powder mix again and reseal in a bigger container. Also, consider adding your mini marshmallows and you are all set. Cheaper, safer, and yummier. -
Mccormick's Chili Powder ?
SGWhiskers replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
thank you so much for your posts. The chili was great and I'm back to using it again. (I had it on my suspect list after a couple bad reactions, but I later put the cc'ed corn chips at the top of that list). -
ARCHIVED Nuts Without Cross Contamination?
SGWhiskers replied to bethmon's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
What is the brand that Kroger carries in the produce section? Our Kroger carries one brand usually, but sometimes, there are others around. Do they say gluten-free or does the ingredients list just not have wheat. I'm desperate for some nuts other than Almonds. I miss my pecans. I quit them back in the early days of gluten-free when I heard about cross contamination... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Non Dairy Drink?
SGWhiskers replied to homemaker's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I ate my cereal dry with a side glass of OJ for the first year when I learned I was allergic to milk. Then I was used to soy milk enough to add it to my cereal. I really prefer the soy on a hot cereal like grits though. -
The label says several safe ingredients, then "spices". I know that mixed "spices" can be a red flag, but then I keep hearing McCormick's is safe. So, What is the verdict on McCormics "spices" as an ingredient in one of their bottled spices? It is the same size/shape as all my pure spices from McCormics in the little glass bottles. Chili is in the crock...

Jason, I'm sorry that your trip to France didn't go well for you. I couldn't even imagine trying to tackle gluten-free in a foreign country. I can't successfully eat out here yet. I've read your posts through the last year and it seems you have learned a lot and gained some assertiveness for taking care of your health. If you are suspecting you need antidepressants...

cooking is expensive and time consuming, but we need to do it. My recommendations for cutting down the time/cost: Cook 2 lbs ground beef all at once and put in a covered bowl for the week that way you can scoop a little out and add it to your dinner for the night. Throw a cheap cut of pork meat into a crock pot with a bag of mixed veggies and frozen...

ARCHIVED Still Feeling Like Crap?
SGWhiskers replied to GlutenGuy36's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
gluten guy, I too am feeling like you. I was diagnosed about a month after you. I'm also convinced there is another disease that hasn't been diagnosed, because while I feel so much better than pre diagnosis, I'm still struggling to get through the days. I rarely feel anything close to good. I've had my antibodies checked twice and they were back in the... -
ARCHIVED Medical Marijuana For Symptom Control
SGWhiskers replied to raisin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I feel terrible body aches almost constantly and have been through almost every test possible for other autoimmune diseases. I'm taking Cymbalta for fibro and low doses of tylenol almost daily. Medical marijuana was passed in my state recently and this discussion has me tempted to try. I've got some worries though: 1) I would really rather eat/drink... -
ARCHIVED Curry Powder
SGWhiskers posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hubby came home with Kroger brand curry powder. Ingredients are listed on the back. If nothing is on the suspect list, could it still have gluten in it? For example, it lists tumeric, pepper, cumin etc., but nothing like natural flavor, seasonings, anti-caking agents, food starch. -
ARCHIVED Any Requests For 'aversion Therapy' (gluten Challenge)...
SGWhiskers replied to StacyA's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
How about a bowel of oatmeal soaked for 30 minutes in milk and then slow simmered another 30 with cinnamon and brown sugar with cream. -
ARCHIVED New Rhumatologist Recommended Paleo Diet
SGWhiskers replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I might miss fruit, but at this point, I'd give up eating all together if I thought it would help my pain levels. Non-sweet fruit. I can't even delineate that in my head. What about fruits we think of as vegetables? pumpkin, cucumber, tomato? Citrus, berries, rose family(pear, apple, peach). I don't eat bananas, avacados, or mangos due to latex allergy... -
ARCHIVED New Rhumatologist Recommended Paleo Diet
SGWhiskers replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
This doc was recommending restricting my fruits to only small amounts of local in season items. Suggesting that the body wasn't designed for fruit year round. Right now this means the difference for me of cutting starch, legumes, and maybe fruit from my diet. Starch I won't miss. Legumes I could get used to. Fruit is one of my staple items. Right now... -
ARCHIVED New Rhumatologist Recommended Paleo Diet
SGWhiskers posted a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I would like to hear your experiences good or bad with this diet as compared to just gluten-free/CF/EggFree -
Thanks for the cough drop tips and the pats on the back. Today was MUCH better. Tylenol and tea with honey kept the sore throat at bay. The sniffles have not kicked in, so I'm feeling pretty good. I also had almost no difficulty asking for a one time accomodation at work due to celiac. We have a mandatory training meeting coming up scheduled in a room...

I get forehead tingles 45 minutes after ingestion, and a migraine progresses from there down my body, shoulders, and then hips over the next few hours. I really feel physically the worst 24-48 hours later as my body starts to ache/cramp/tingle/twitch all over. Lately, nausea (probably migraine/indigestion) have been bothering me on the subsequent days. On...

I had some goofy things happen today, and I feel the need to let it all out. First, I realized I was catching the wretched cold someone in the office had last week. I'm looking forward to that upcoming fun. Then I requested my old hospital send all my new records to a new rhumatologist I'm seeing this Saturday. Well the old hospital sent the records to our...
