  1. I was so happy when they took the wheat-containing soy sauce out. I had used Stubb's BBQ sauce for years with no problems and then I started getting very sick. It never had soy sauce before but for some crazy reason, they started putting it in. Now they've come to their senses! I wish more companies would.
  2. The only problem I've had is sneaking them out of that noisy bag.
  3. Good luck with the job interviews! From personal experience, even if dying my hair didn't make any difference, it did make ME feel better about myself. My hair was a drab yellowish white blah grey and I accepted it as part of the natural aging process. Then our water softener started having problems and my hair began turning a curious shade of orange/pink...
  4. Thanks for pointing this out. I just printed my coupon. This week Publix has it on sale for $3.99. I've been paying around $5.99 so this will be a wonderful price break - and it's about time. There aren't many deals for gluten-free products.
  5. You can cut them into thin sticks like french fries, toss with oil to coat and sprinkle with salt, cinnamon and chipotle pepper. Then roast them in the oven on a baking sheet at a high temperature, turning once or twice so they're nice and brown. You can play around with the seasonings. Sometimes I do mine with just salt and then drizzle balsamic vinegar...
  6. Corn has gluten but not the kind that makes us sick. In fact, I think it's basically another name for the corn protein. I've seen it listed on some products, especially pet foods. I bet this company was just being overly cautious listing it. Perhaps they didn't know there is a difference.
  7. I've read where fermented foods are good for us. Humans all over the world have been eating them for as long as humans have been preserving their food - sauerkraut, kimchee, yogurt, kefir, cheese, pickles - even vinegar and wine!
  8. I eat kimchee almost every day and never had a problem. I buy King's Kimchee and it even has "GLUTEN FREE" on the label under the ingredients. I'm sure it's an acquired taste but I love the stuff.
  9. When I get glutened, drinking a Red Bull seems to help lift the fog. Somebody said it's the B-12 that's helpfu. It also has other B vitamins. Lots of water also helps flush out the offending molecules. I love bubbly water and it helps calm my queasy tummy while rehydrating me.
  10. What an interesting thread! I'm sort of retired . . . are women ever really retired? We're self-employed managing our own real estate which has been quite a challenge in recent years. Before I married, I was a paralegal specializing in probate. My husband got his real estate broker's license so I quit to help with that. I live in south Florida and...
  11. I've taken Toprol XL and the generic metoprolol for a number of years with no problem. I think these are beta blockers. Only one time I suspected there might be a problem with the generic as there was a shortage and a strange generic was substituted by my pharmacy. Then the FDA shut that company down and I haven't had any issues since.
  12. Friends invited us to join them after church at Applebee's last month and I quickly looked up their gluten-free menu online. Not much! I ordered a grilled shrimp spinach salad without the dressing. I ended up with five of the tiniest shrimp I've ever seen and a pile of spinach with random pieces of tomato sprinkled on top. No bacon, egg or anything else you...
  13. I haven't tried it with chicken but I have made fried pork chops and they were awesome! It also makes a very good gravy. It has to be mixed with water and shaken before adding to the pan but it looks and tastes just like gravy made with wheat flour. Now I'm craving fried chicken!
  14. You can get a cheap toaster for around $10 that will work just fine. I marked mine with a big G F and put a pretty yellow shower cap over it. This prevents crumbs from the regular toaster from getting into mine. You need to treat gluten as you would any nasty substance that can make you ill. Think of it as chicken blood or dog poop . . . you wouldn't...
  15. I made these tonight and I'm not going to say how many I ate! Let's just say there aren't many left. I used parmesan cheese and canola oil, and mixed them in a bowl with my immersion blender. The batter was very loose and I really didn't think this recipe would work but soon I saw their cute little tops towering over each other in the oven. This...
  16. Don't beat yourself up . . . you did what you could at the time. I think we can all look back and think we should have done something differently. I know I could have on many occasions.
  17. This is so heartbreaking. There's only so much you can do. Unfortunately, some people shouldn't have pets of any kind if they can't properly care for them. A friend on a rescue board had something similar happen. The neighbor's kitty kept showing up at his house in all sorts of horrible weather, cold and bedraggled. Long story short, he eventually took...
  18. Thank you! I'll be looking for these! It seems like every recipe I see in magazines and elsewhere call for Panko. Regular gluten-free bread crumbs leave a lot to be desired unless you make them yourself and even then don't come close to Panko.
  19. I love orange kitties and these are hilarious! Nothing funnier than cats and boxes. Mine fetch toys when they feel like it but I haven't been able to get them to do anything worthwhile like dusting.
  20. Bless you for saving her from uncaring people who don't deserve the love of a kitten. I'm upset with my stepdaughter for leaving her sweet little Siamese outside and am *this* close to cat-napping her. These regal creatures deserve better! If I didn't have four already, I know exactly what I'd do. And I may still do it!
  21. Same here! I love talking about pets, especially kitties, almost as much I do food.
  22. I took Norvasc and then the generic when it was available. I now take it as a part of Exforge which is a combo drug. I never had any problems with any of these formulations. Is there any way you can call the drug company and find out if it contains gluten? I got nowhere with Walgreens when I tried to check on another drug.
  23. I think we all went through some shock when we learned we could no longer eat all the things we loved but after the initial grief/anger period, I decided to keep making the same things but with substitutions. Thankfully, it's worked out fairly well. cornbread: I use my old recipe but substitute Bob's Red Mill All-Purpose baking mix and a pinch of xanthan...
  24. I've made it with cheddar, parmesan and part-skim mozzarella. All turned out great. I think the cheese may add the fat into the bread so I've never tried making it without. The cheddar made the rolls a pretty color, too. I have tapioca flour but haven't tried making them from scratch yet. I ordered a case of the mixes and need to use those up before trying...
  25. I'm 5' 4", my mother was 5', her mother was 4' 10" and my dad's mother was 5' - I was the giant offspring! My dad was a little taller but not by much, probably 5' 8".
