ARCHIVED What'S The Deal With Celiacs And Nightshades?
chasbari replied to glutefree's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I grew up on potatoes and tomatoes among other nightshades. Hate to give them up but as I have rheumatoid arthritis in addition to my celiac I have found I have to stay away from them at all cost. If I eat anything from the nightshade family I can pretty much count on not being able to walk, grasp, stand or any other reasonable activity without a severe increase... -
I find it well worth the drive to Alliance Ohio to see my Doc at Premier Health Associates: Jean D. Dib, M.D. is the one who got me through my diagnosis. Love the man for his compassion and understanding. He was recommended to me by Denise Ramey who facilitates the local Celiac support group at Raisin Rack. If it is OK to post a phone number I will (3...

My experience as well. When I went gluten-free last year I actually had a worse reaction to soy than to gluten. Haved stayed clear of it ever since with no interest in ever reintroducing it. You have to be as diligent at reading labels for it as well. Who'da thunk it would be in canned tuna fish...grrrr. It has never been granted GRAS (Generally Regarded...

ARCHIVED Family In Denial
chasbari replied to Gobbie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think I can understand your dilemma a little bit. Even though you already know how much better you feel it is still your family and I think we have a deep need to want to be understood by them, to be accepted by them and to make them happy, proud, of us and to not disrespect them in any way. Food is such a culturally strong part of the family fabric for... -
My personal bias here makes me suspicious of the amount of soy milk you are taking in. I could not tolerate and still cannot tolerate soy anything, in fact, it made me feel as bad if not worse than gluten early on in the gluten-free process. There are some phytoestrogen qualities, from my understanding, of unfermented soy products that may imply themselves...

ARCHIVED My Stomach Is Killing Me!
chasbari replied to jenngolightly's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I do think you belong here. Maybe the first answers were a little bit harsh. I was kind of thinking along those same line too but... I can sympathize with you. Here you are with few options and its hard to throw away money without at least getting something to eat. Hey, before I went gluten-free as a result of this lovely disease I ate all kinds of things... -

ARCHIVED Why Is This Such A Popular Condition For People To Self Diagnose With?
chasbari replied to silvertail's topic in Publications & Publicity
This whole discussion almost brought me to tears.. a major near accomplishment in light of my Sjogren's syndrome... to go with all the other autoimmune symptoms I have been dealing with for decades that are slowly getting better as I stay fastidiously gluten free. It is hard enough staying gluten-free here in a mixed household with caring family members.... -
After having read Dr. Weston Price's "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration" I got to thinking about related developmental difficulties. Actually, I got quite angry after reading a book full of some pretty incredible observations written back in the late 1930's, I believe. Granted, he was not looking for gluten free but his inquiry into the role of nutrition...

ARCHIVED Against The Grain - David J. Craig/columbia Magazine
chasbari replied to Lisa's topic in Publications & Publicity
Thank you so much for posting this. I have book marked this and will share it with everyone I possibly can. Just curious as to whether it would be useful/prudent for many of us to forward our medical records to the good doctor in interest of increasing his data base for research purposes. Any thoughts on this? CS -
ARCHIVED Did Anyone See This?
chasbari replied to modiddly16's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Makes me understand just why I am still rather fastidiously paranoid about anyone else preparing any food for me. Even when someone thinks they are being relatively careful they are not taking into consideration the things we can't take for granted. Then, when you get someone like this no good so and so doing something like this.... grrrrrr. I do understand... -
ARCHIVED Did Anyone See This?
chasbari replied to modiddly16's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hmmm.. I have a "friend" like that who will never find me eating at his table again as he pulled a similar stunt, although with different prohibited foods at the time. He just laughed after I had hesitatingly eaten some of what he assured me was "safe" food. Grounds for charges of assault with a deadly weapon, perhaps? No less real. -

ARCHIVED Other Food Intolerances Went Away After Being gluten-free?
chasbari replied to Jennifer2's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This all makes sense to me considering the tips of the villi are where the enzymes to digest casien in dairy are produced. If and when that damage heals it would seem more probable that a dairy intolerance would then go away so why not for other foods as well. Also, if gut permeability is no longer compromised it seems likely that other foods would also be... -
ARCHIVED Triumphant Set Back..huh?
chasbari replied to chasbari's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I love pineapple but just don't understand papaya... for some reason it doesn't taste as good as its name sounds to me. I think I would be happiest living in Hawai'i in the middle of a field of pineapples. I have fresh pineapple pretty much every day as it really helps me feel better. I am eating goat's milk yogurt but haven't tried any other probiotics or... -
Well, a year ago I was all but ready to lay down and die. I had given up all performance responsibilities and was staying in the game by doing a little stage directing. I have been involved with a local symphony orchestra's yearly performances of "Amahl and the Night Visitors' for the last 14 years and had to relinquish singing the role of Melchior as I became...

ARCHIVED Any Chance Their Is Gluten In :
chasbari replied to SLB5757's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Nobody has addressed the Munchos. They are a manufactured potato product and if they are anything like Pringles they have wheat in them as a binder. I think I remember seeing that as n ingredient a long time ago. I don't have a package in front of me but I bet that is your source. -
ARCHIVED Co-worker With Lupus Is Going Gluten-free
chasbari replied to CGally81's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I fired my rheumatologist who became quite contentious with me after my celiac DX. He said I probably didn't really have celiac and it was probably just IBS... this after a very positive endoscopy and a very positive response to the diet. He wanted to ignore the celiac DX and put me on all sorts of drugs that are seemingly no longer necessary as I can walk... -
ARCHIVED Co-worker With Lupus Is Going Gluten-free
chasbari replied to CGally81's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The chicken issue might be related to Loren Cordain's paleo diet theories. He contends that foods high in lectins such as chicken and legumes make a leaky gut worse as far as gut permeability hence the need to avoid them. I know I have been avoiding all grains and legumes and chicken while following a mostly paleo diet for the last year. I also avoid nightshades... -
ARCHIVED Yippy! Spam Is Gluten Free!

ARCHIVED Feeling Defeated & Useless
chasbari replied to Sarenha's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
You certainly aren't dumb. The fact that you have the tenacity to write this out in spite of how you are feeling tells me you are incredibly determined. I understand how frustrating it is trying to explain this to family, especially when you have been temporarily set back by an accidental glutening. It happens to all of us, even with the best of vigilance... -
ARCHIVED Cooking Oil Spray!
chasbari replied to jststric's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The only problem I had with Pam is that it has soy in it and I was reacting pretty severely to it early on. Haven't felt like trying it yet but it might be a problem in early stages with anyone who seems to be sensitive to seemingly everything at first. CS -
ARCHIVED This Might Be A Stupid Question....
chasbari replied to Shess0816's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Not a stupid question at all. As a rheumatoid arthritis sufferer on top of celiac I can state without a doubt through experience that nightshades cause a pretty severe inflammatory response if I eat any. Nightshades include Potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, tobacco that I know of. Eliminating them from my diet has definitely improved my overall health... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Pizza Request Sent To Papa John's (and They Are Listening!)
chasbari replied to ncflusche's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I voted that I am not really a pizza eater.... anymore. Although reading through tiredofbeingsick's pizza recipe has me drooling and remembering that I do miss pizza a bit. I used to get the cheesesticks at Papa John's and sit there scooping out the garlic butter sauce with it. I couldn't do tomato sauce so that was my way around that. Tired's pizza ... she...
