Celiac.com - Celiac Disease & Gluten-Free Diet Support Since 1995

  1. Hi passionfruit, I was 5'11", overweight (still am but much less so) and also diagnosed with IBS (twice). I was finally diagnosed with Celiac disease. As several of the posters have stated your doctor is stating not only old medical school training but they obviously didn't even bother to pick up any medical journals or do any reading or research at...
  2. I cannot eat the Blue Diamond nuts. I eat planters frequently (just plain) with no issue and I'm fairly sensitive to CC. However, that said, I'm quite intolerant of refined corn. Corn-starch, corn-syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, etc. So many of the 'flavoured' nuts I cannot eat at all. I also can't eat some brands of nuts for no apparent reason (like Blue...
  3. Hi Rain, and welcome to the boards. I think the advice the others have given is great, but I wanted to ask you are you following a gluten-free diet or a wheat-free diet? I know you said you were diagnosed two months ago, but you mention 'wheat-free' above, which is not at all the same and I wanted to make sure you are aware of that.
  4. Hot air popcorn popper is what we use. Wear-ever popcorn pumper model works great and you can find them on E-bay cheap ($8-$15). Search for 'wear even popcorn'.
  5. You may have a problem with candidia or a carb intolerance in general. Have you tried eliminating or reducing the rice milk and mac and cheese? Refined carbs of almost any variety give me horrible gas and bloating as well.
  6. Have you ever been in one of the packaging facilities for the mass coffee houses? There are only four in the US, and they handle all the coffee for all the brands. Folger's, MJB, Hills Bros, etc. The production lines used there handle a variety of blends, additives (including some which would contain gluten), etc. There is a huge CC issues. I don't trust...
  7. Congratulations!!!!!
  8. Kirkland brand (Costco) acetaminophen is ok. Also check out Open Original Shared Link
  9. Sweet potatoes are good. Also, there are five families of nightshades. Most (anecdotally) people seem to only react to one or at most two of the families. I have in the last year experienced enough healing that I can tolerates tomatoes now to some degrees, and potatoes (if I ate starch which I rarely do). Peppers (jalapeno, chile, etc), paprika, and anything...
  10. Nightshade intolerance is quite commonly found in conjunction with celiac disease and/or gluten intolerance. It is possible you are dealing with both. And you are correct, they would not see evidence of celiac disease unless they actually went through the small intestine and sampled the biopsies there.
  11. We have one in our county (population ~80,000). They started out as a regular bakery, and ran a couple of 'gluten-free' special days using gluten-free things they purchased wholesale. They were stunned at the response, and after a series of test runs converted to a gluten-free bakery. We also have an excellent catering company that is entirely gluten free...
  12. Fresh (raw) asparagus is awesome. Dipped in garlic and extra virgin olive oil is even better. Sliced avocado with a little bit of sea salt and cayenne pepper sprinkled over them. Wash a collard green leaf and a red swiss chard leaf. Strip the stems out - but save them, excellent fiber in the stem, slice the stem into pieces and use it as a salad...
  13. I am super sensitive to most things but I've had no problem with any single malts which I find interesting since some other super sensitives do seem to react to single malt.
  14. I trust no fryers after a couple incidents involving a 'dedicated' fryer. In fact now unless I know it is a place that is specifically celiac or gluten-free aware and trained I don't generally eat out. Which is frustrating.
  15. Karen said what I was going to. MSG is derived from soy. Processed soy especially is high in glutamates. MSG is a known cause of headaches and other problems (MSG is evil). Even before I found out that soy was causing many of my neurologic symptoms, MSG gave me a killer headache within 30-45 minutes after consuming it. And soy sauce is a common ingredient...
  16. I'm sorry, but raven is right. For a endoscopic biopsy for celiac disease to be effective you have to be on a gluten containing diet. And if you have been off gluten for a while it needs to be an extensive, intensive diet. Your GI is flat out wrong. You need to change doctors.
  17. He (your husband) is right. I would also suggest you look into the GAPS diet (Open Original Shared Link). I did this for three months and it helped speed my healing tremendously. It was a lot of work at first to get enough stuff prepped up but it was SO worth it for me. * Edited for clarity and another typo
  18. We don't juice, but we have a blender in which I make 'green drinks'. Veggies, fruits, and berries all go in there and come out tasting wonderful. That is my primary source of fiber and my system is much happier. Plus the glycemic index of a whole food blending is much lower than that of a juicer because the fiber content slows absorption of the fructose...
  19. It is interesting that all of your IgA levels are low. You may want to ask your doctor to have a total serum IgA done to find our if you are IgA deficient. Do you still have ongoing symptoms that led you down this path?
  20. I have to agree with the previous two posters. I think you should continue pursuing this with your GI. Blood tests are notorious for false negatives. My Dad, myself, and one of my sisters all had one or more negative blood workups prior to diagnosis. Given your family history and symptoms you are listing many commonly linked symptoms. The only one that...
  21. Hi Jane, First of all, alternating C&D is a well known symptom on both gluten intolerance and celiac disease. Neither of those would show up with wheat on an allergy test. Gluten may (and I stress may) show up on an IGg food intolerance panel, but that isn't the same as a diagnostic for gluten intolerance, and definately not for celiac disease. If...
  22. Any lab. My doctor routinely orders my magnesium levels when I get my blood work every six months. Ask for a CBC, with D, B, Iron, and Magnesium checkups. If you are regularly cold as well when everyone around you is not, ask for your vitamin K levels to be checked as well as T3 and T4 Thryoid. Make sure you get a copy of the lab work yourself because 'normal...

    ARCHIVED Weight Gain

Hi Jestgar, I have run across a lot of research (there was an article in the British Journal of Medicine - I think I saw it sometime in the winter of 2008-2009) going into detail on the linkage between soy and thyroid issues. This is a fairly well documented relationship in people that already have depressed thryoid function. Which is probably the real...
