ARCHIVED Predisone - Refractory Sprue - Lupus
JillianLindsay replied to Karrin's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm sorry if this is over-simplified and/or repetitive (I didn't have time to read all the other posts). I am put on prednisone for about two weeks at least twice each year for problems with my asthma. I do not enjoy it, but it certainly helps me breathe easier! The side effects I experience are: constant hunger/huge appetite, sore eyes (sometimes... -
ARCHIVED My Dog Ate My Bread!
JillianLindsay replied to nu-to-no-glu's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease

ARCHIVED Smart Balance Omega Non-stick Cooking Spray
JillianLindsay replied to sunnybabi1986's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The Canadian Celiac Association says it is safe -- any "hard" or distilled alcohol is gluten-free because the gluten cannot make it through the distillation process. Some people still react to it though because they have a wheat allergy (either in addition to, or as opposed to, celiac disease) or are extremely sensitive. If you're new to the... -
ARCHIVED Chocolate Question...
JillianLindsay replied to goldyjlox's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Good news -- Jacob Suchard is a division of Kraft Canada, so major allergens would be clearly listed on the ingredients label. Bon apetit! -
ARCHIVED Chocolate Question...
JillianLindsay replied to goldyjlox's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
What about in Canada, does anyone know? It looks like they are distributed by Jacobs Suchard and not Kraft. Ingredients: White Chocolate (sugar, milk ingredients, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, artificial flavour), Nougat (sugar, honey, almonds, invert sugar syrup, dried egg whites). I have no issues with soy or eggs, so it looks perfectly safe... -

ARCHIVED Is Old El Paso Salsa Gluten Free?
JillianLindsay replied to JillianLindsay's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thank you! Yes, I realize that onions and garlic are safe, however I was told to look out for the powders in ingredients lists because some of the powder mixes aren't pure and can have gluten in the additives. I shall enjoy my salsa, Jillian -
ARCHIVED Is Old El Paso Salsa Gluten Free?
JillianLindsay posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Sorry for the double post, I realized I had posted this in the wrong place the first time. My question is... is the Old El Paso salsa gluten free in Canada? Anyone know? I've tried searching online with no luck. I have the Thick N' Chunky Medium flavour. The ingredients list onion and garlic powders so there could be hidden gluten there. Is this brand... -

Is the Old El Paso salsa gluten free in Canada? Anyone know? I've tried searching online with no luck. I have the Thick N' Chunky Medium flavour. The ingredients list onion and garlic powders so there could be hidden gluten there. Is this brand known for listing allergens reliably? Anyone in Canada use this product? Thanks Jillian -

ARCHIVED Blood Test Positive, Biopsy Inconclusive
JillianLindsay replied to lk917's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You are definitely not back to square one my dear. I would definitely recommend starting the gluten-free diet to see if it helps. If you have +ve blood work, lymphocyte overgowth and a positive dietary response, then your DR will likely diagnose you based on those facts. With my limited medical knowledge, I believe that lymphocytes are a type of white... -
ARCHIVED Brittle Nails
JillianLindsay replied to earlysu's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
People with celiac disease can be low on a large number of nutrients. The ones I was tested for were iron, B12, calcium and folic acid. Brittle nails suggest low calcium. You should probably be taking supplements for all of the above (make sure they are gluten-free of course!). Also take a look at the Canada food guide to see if you are getting enough... -
ARCHIVED Confused About Low Lactase But No Allergy To Milk?
JillianLindsay replied to RobynJ's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree with what everyone else has already said... casein is a milk protein and lactase is an enzyme that breaks down lactose. And you need to ingest lactose in order to keep producing the lactase enzymes to break down the lactose, so your son should avoid casein but not lactose -
ARCHIVED Terrible Reaction, Don't Know Why
JillianLindsay replied to positivenrgfairy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This is just a wild shot in the dark and I have no evidence to back this up.... but I always react to Starbucks coffee and no other kind. My symptoms are brain fog, major fatigue, and irritability/depression. Have you been drinking Starbucks beverages with no reactions in the recent past? Did you alert the barista that you have celiac disease and they... -

JillianLindsay replied to num1habsfan's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Going to Smitty's for dinner tonight (in Winnipeg) for the first time since my dx. Can't find a # to call ahead (it's a brand new location and not yet listed). Does anyone know what (if anything) is safe on their menu? Thanks, Jillian P.S. -- Lisa, I am a HUGE hockey fan too! I've been playing for 20+ years (I'm 26) and watch HNIC whenever... -
ARCHIVED Pantene
JillianLindsay replied to stephkb's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Sounds to me like they're saying that their products are basically gluten-free but in our lawsuit-happy society, no one actually wants to take responsibility for their products, so they won't actually answer your question directly. Frustrating. I tend to stick to companies that will give me a straight answer as I don't want to support companies who won... -
ARCHIVED Are Bulk Bins Okay?

ARCHIVED Dark Circles Under Eyes?
JillianLindsay replied to BloatusMaximus's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't know if celiac disease causes dark circles under the eyes... but I do know that it is something common with allergies. Could you have a mold or dust allergy? Also people with celiac disease that is not yet well-managed may still have D and be dehydrated which can also cause dark circles under the eyes. Here's an older discussion you may want... -

ARCHIVED France Trip A Disaster
JillianLindsay replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I can relate. I am newly dx'ed (3 months) and haven't yet developed a grand repertoire of "tools" or coping skills to deal when I come across a difficult situation. I'll try a few times (i.e. different restaurants, asking different questions, etc.) but if that doesn't work out I become very discouraged, frustrated, upset, etc. and start feeling sorry for... -

ARCHIVED 1 Week gluten-free And Had Ceaser Salad And Lots Of Stomach Issues!
JillianLindsay replied to pufffee's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
YIKES! You can't just pick off the croutons dear, you must ask the server to leave them off. Even traces of gluten can make you very sick, as you unfortunately experienced. In my opinion you should always let your server know that you have celiac disease so they can take every precaution to avoid cross-contamination and avoid making you sick. ...
