  1. 1.5 years gluten free. Took about 6-8 months to really feel "good." Then I wondered what on earth people were talking about when they talked about feeling like crap when they ate wheat. Then I got glutened royally. And I realized just how "good" good felt. Now I can't imagine purposely eating anything with gluten. If I want it that badly, I'll make it myself...
  2. When I get glutened, those are my symptoms too. Sorry.
  3. I am just going to second what everyone else said, and share with you some advice I received regarding eating disorder issues (can't just have one issue, now, can I? Nooooo....) What is it you are getting from the foods you eat? For many of us, it's pleasure. And quite honestly, it should be! Eating and food are central to our lives, and it should be a pleasurable...
  4. There are great pizza options -- zPizza has gluten-free pizzas, and more and more local pizzarias are stocking up on gluten-free crusts. You can also make your own. Just focus on the topics and the flavor, and not the crust.
  5. Ugh! I feel you. Felt the same way. First off, don't start replacing foods yet. Take a month or two to clean out your system and eat as much unprocessed food as you can. then your tastebuds will sort of "reset," and you'll be able to add replacements in. Some gluten-free items are just gross, but to different people. For example, some people LOVE K-Toos....
  6. Hey Stef -- two things. 1. Real Simple has an article on organizing this month. It talks about organizing for your style and ability. I haven't read it yet but I just bought it. 2. Open Original Shared Link I'm told this is wonderful. So maybe it would help? Good luck. I have ADD, and the idea of cleaning out and organizing must strike, or...
  7. Wow. that is a tough situation, given that she doesn't have symptoms. What clued you in that it was an issue? As an adult, it's an emotional roller coaster, so I can't imagine being 6 and going through it. But I had a great time discovering all the things I could make for myself, that tasted WAY better than processed foods. And I second the household-gluten...
  8. My issues besides GI have just recently started to clear up. Constantly tired, arthritic pain, hip pain, allergies, etc. Within the last month or so they've gone away. I've been gluten-free for 8 months.
  9. I've never had any issues (and according to my research found that they are gluten free) with Benefit's lip colors. Revlon has always been fine with me, specifically their colorstay lip sticks (the actual lipsticks, not the stains). I also use burt's bees lip shimmers -- the darker colors go on like lipstick, and I LOVE Palladio's herbal lip balms in their...
  10. I couldn't speak to gluten-free cosmetics, as I don't have any dermatological responses to gluten. So I can use whatever there. But what I like? Revlon colorstay mechanical pencil liners are awesome. I use the eggplant/plum shade, as it is not quite as dark as black, but not as chalky as gray. Love it. And I LOVE Urban Decay's Eye Potion Primer in Sin. You...
  11. gluten-free is testy. Suggest: make the real thing and just enjoy small amounts of it. Because our food is so expensive, I find myself much more mindful of not just zoning out and noshing. I make regular cookies and cakes, and freeze any extras so I can reheat them later. Would that possibly help? The reason I suggest: 1. real ingredients satisfy your...
  12. Udi's bread is awesome -- I like it better than regular bread, but I'm not a bread person traditionally, anyway. Udi's has texture and flavor. I do NOT like the whole grain -- prefer the white. The whole grain seems to disintegrate when you chew it. The white stands up to the challenge! I love glutino crackers. yum. What is "cider" when referring...
  13. For most of my recipes, I've just subbed a premixed variety of alternative flours. I like Tom Sawyer, as it already has the xanthan gum in it. I cut it 1:1 with sorghum flour, and it turns out great. It is VERY easy to convert recipes. Have fun!
  14. Hm, just a guess, but I would take the same ingredients they have in larabars and food process them. You'll have to play with amounts, but Larabars don't have anything else in there. I have a food processor from the 1970's. Works just dandy. I borrowed it from my MIL. Good luck! Let us know how it turns out!
  15. Because I just faced an issue with a kitten...if you can't find him a good home and the shelters can't help you, put him down. I know this sounds mean, but I just had a kitten climb up into my car's hood, right beside the engine. After the fascinating extraction process (thank God for nice guys at gas stations) I needed to find the baby a home. Cute, 6 weeks...
  16. My faves (and I hate taking time to make stuff!): Udi's Muffins. Hands down, best muffins ever (including poison muffins!) Fruity Pebbles with almond milk Oatmeal (microwaved) If I have time, I make Pamela's pancakes. Yummo.
  17. Hello! And welcome! My story is that I have no insurance. But a friend kept bugging me to try the diet and see how I felt. He was so right. I went off gluten for one month, and that is all it took. Gone were the GI issues, the constant bathroom runs, the draggy feelings. I recommend trying the diet. Since you test negative according to the medical...
  18. My favorite so far: Tom Sawyers cut with sorghum -- 1:1 ratio. Makes awesome cakes, muffins and cookies. For breads, I use mixes.
  19. I second your list. I also really like Pamela's and haven't had any issues.
  20. There is no way to destress without giving up something or combining things. I did what you are doing for the last semester (also a student) and it just about did me in. Thoughts: Any way to cut down on the commute? I'm assuming if there was, you would have done it, but maybe it's worth looking into again? Exercise: how about three days a week...
  21. Great post! I found the same kind of health store in WV. I about died. There is a reason they are all skinny and pale -- who can afford to buy much food at those prices?! So I'm with you. I'll buy my WalMart and Wegman's gluten free deals and I'll be happy about it!
  22. I encourage you to look around these boards for ideas. Many of us are whole-hearted fans of Udi's bread which is even better than regular sandwich bread! And Tinkyada rice pasta and Schar pasta is excellent, and taste like regular pasta. I make them often. Start buying naturally gluten free foods so you don't waste foods. If there is a gluten free item...
  23. Jencat -- you'll get there. Just give yourself some time to get off the roller coaster and start feeling like YOU again. The gym/physical activity will still be there when you get back.
  24. If I may make a suggestion: work on your food issues first, get your diet solid, and then add in physical exercise. If your energy is already low, adding on physical exertion will only tire you out more, you'll likely quit, and then you'll feel even worse. Keep in mind, I'm assuming the low energy is a side effect of gluten, not just the typical "but I don...
  25. I'm in south central PA, and I don't see anything around here. I too am training for a half-marathon, with Team in Training/Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I would love to be involved in something that increases awareness of this disease.
