ARCHIVED Self Elimination Diet - Risky?
sandsurfgirl replied to Bobbie Jo's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
People eating white bread and the brown colored white bread they try to pass off as whole wheat aren't getting tons of nutrition from that even though they are fortified. I don't see how cutting gluten could make you miss out on vitamins and minerals. There are volumes of research to prove that the SAD (Standard American Diet) is well... sad. And bad for... -
ARCHIVED Feeling Like An Idiot
sandsurfgirl replied to polarbearscooby's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'll come to the island of Glutenfreeland. Sounds great to me. I almost sampled some beef at Costco and then read the ingredients. Contained malt. Who puts malt in beef? oh those guys. -
ARCHIVED Getting Used To It All...
sandsurfgirl replied to Mama Melissa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have one of those too. I also tuck food into my regular purse. I wrap the cold food in foil and then wrap it together with an ice pack in another layer of foil. Big plastic baggie and I'm set. -
ARCHIVED Getting Used To It All...

I got bloodwork when I was first diagnosed. Interestingly I was VERY ill, like thought I had something horrible and would die soon ill, yet only one of the 5 tests came back positive, although it was triple the limit. I think it was IgA but honestly I don't even remember now. My doc wanted a gluten challenge and biopsy to confirm and I said "Only if you want... -
As far as cooking regular meals, I just sub rice flour if something calls for flour like thickening a gravy, rice pasta if it calls for pasta, etc. I don't use gluten free cookbooks. Now baking is a different story. However, I have found a good all purpose gluten free flour mix can be substituted in regular gluten recipes 1 for 1 and so far I've had good...

ARCHIVED Getting Used To It All...
sandsurfgirl replied to Mama Melissa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm very sensitive to CC and I eat in people's homes. I've never gotten glutened by anyone else. I eat out a lot too and have only gotten glutened a handful of times. I'm gluten free about 11 months now. Don't go sit in another room. It makes you feel awful and it makes them feel bad too. Ask what they are cooking and bring something similar. Or let... -
ARCHIVED Diagnosed Yesterday...anxious And Need Advice Plz!
sandsurfgirl replied to Kimbalou's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Once I got my diagnosis by blood tests I refused to see a GI doc. Two GI docs who were partners refused to test me for celiac nearly 8 years ago because they had a laundry list of reasons why I couldn't possibly have it. Two horrific pregnancies and some very sick terrible years later here I am. Celiac! If you read the stories on here you'll see there... -
ARCHIVED Christmas Dinner Woes

Who exactly asked you not to come? One mean person or the whole family? Maybe you need to just go. They can't isolate you from your family! That's just crazy! -

Your post makes me want to cry. To tell someone not to come to Christmas is... I have no words. I'm so sorry. -
ARCHIVED Recently Diagnosised...questions!
sandsurfgirl replied to Free-CountryGirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
FIRE that doctor and file a complaint to anyone and everyone you can! That is despicable. How can she refuse to run a simple blood test??? Now she screwed you because if you are gluten free you will NOT come up positive on the tests even if you have celiac. Which means if you need a definitive diagnosis then you have to eat a ton of gluten and make yourself... -

sandsurfgirl replied to Free-CountryGirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I must correct you on your post here. If you have all the tests and they come up negative that does NOT mean you don't have celiac. Endoscopies have false negatives too. You have to eat a heck of a lot of gluten to come up positive on an endoscopy. They only take 4 miniscule samples so if they miss the bad spots then you are going to get a false negative... -
ARCHIVED Self Elimination Diet - Risky?
sandsurfgirl replied to Bobbie Jo's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My opinion is you have celiac disease. Somebody who does not have celiac disease wouldn't get sick if they ate gluten again. Your well meaning friends are making me laugh. Why would it be risky to go gluten free? Like there is some inherent goodness about eating gluten? I'm sorry I find that funny, and well... sort of dumb. LOL You get more sensitive... -
ARCHIVED Diagnosed Yesterday...anxious And Need Advice Plz!
sandsurfgirl replied to Kimbalou's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No you should NOT do a biopsy although your doc sounds knowledgable enough not to recommend it. Your blood tests are sufficient diagnostic tools. Once you go gluten free you will likely come up negative on the biopsy. You have to be eating a TON of gluten for like a month to get a positive result on a biopsy. You know you have celiac. Time to accept it and... -

Ooh honey if I cheated like you did I would be in the hospital! If I get CC, I feel like walking death. Okay, so you know we're all gonna give you an internet slap for cheating right? You can make anything gluten free and there are plenty of great mixes out there. Betty Crocker gluten free is awesome. Kinnikinnick and Glutino have great... -

Welcome to the club you never wanted to join! We all panic in the beginning. I ran out of Sprouts hyperventilating on my first shopping trip. I'll have my one year anniversary on January 3rd. Because of the gluten free diet I am a totally different person. Calm, happier, and feeling good!! Because you were so sick you may go through withdrawals... -
ARCHIVED Non-Supportive Husbands And Mothers
sandsurfgirl replied to gorgeous6's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I only have one person in my life who acts like an ignorant moron about my celiac and that's my neighbor. I cursed him out recently because I got so mad that he was going to CC my food on the barbecue at my own house because "a little gluten won't hurt you." Sadly I am positive his wife has celiac. She knows she reacts to wheat. She has all the symptoms.... -
ARCHIVED What If Symptoms Get Worse After Going gluten-free?
sandsurfgirl replied to Staceyshoe's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If their blood tests are positive then that means that regardless of symptoms they have an autoimmune disease and their body is destroying their small intestines EVERY time they eat gluten. There are many other symptoms that seem unrelated- anxiety attacks, nose bleeds, insomnia, allergy symptoms, asthma attacks, joint pain, dizzy spells. If they continue... -

Your husband is being so ignorant it's shocking. Seriously? That's just plain dumb. There are blood tests. There are biopsies. It's a real disease. I'm so sorry for you. That's just got me shaking my head. I would have no tolerance for that sort of stupidity. He's glad he's not married to me because I'd call him an idiot. LOL -
It is very overwhelming at first. I had a panic attack and ran out of the store leaving a full shopping cart behind and hyperventilated in my car the first time I shopped after diagnosis. I barely made it home from the dizziness and cried for like an hour. In my opinion, you need to eat meat. Sorry! With dairy and soy out for you, and your body needing...

Last year at this time I was starting to get extremely ill from my undiagnosed celiac disease. In addition to alternating constipation and diarrhea and gut pain, I was having major dizzy spells, constant sinus infections, joint pain, fatigue so bad it was hard to function, uncontrollable asthma attacks, anxiety attacks constantly so bad I had to pull over...

ARCHIVED Popcorn Got Me Bad!
sandsurfgirl replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Well I posted another thread but I'll update here. I have a bladder infection that went into my kidneys because I did not go to the doc, since I thought I was glutened!!! I had vomiting, D, bloating and gut pain. All gluten symptoms. UGH. -
I keep my explanation brief and I always use the word ALLERGY. Intolerance, celiac and autoimmune disorder have no impact on the waiter's behavior. The word allergy does. I say something like this. "I am allergic to gluten. It's called celiac. Gluten is wheat, barley and rye. Can you please send the manager over to help me figure out what I can eat?" The...
