ARCHIVED Medical Marijuana For Symptom Control
sandsurfgirl replied to raisin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have trouble trusting any of the science behind medical marijuana because everyone has an agenda either for or against it. I know there are all sorts of things on the net saying it's good for this that or the other, but I think much of it is from people who want to get high and want it legalized. There are so many doctors prescribing it to people who... -
ARCHIVED How Hard Is It To Be Careful?
sandsurfgirl replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Let's just give a big growl together! GRRRRRRRRR LOL I hate that every time I eat out it's a risk. I hate it. But I will not quit eating out. I just won't. (yet) -
ARCHIVED Hair Products With Wheat
sandsurfgirl replied to BcG3987's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I avoid all wheat containing beauty products. It's just so hard to get it off your hands or make sure it never ends up in your mouth. I used to be a die hard Redken girl and I literally cried when I gave it up but my health improved so much when I did. Now I'm a Matrix girl and I use Enjoy sometimes. Redken has only ONE line that doesnt' contain wheat... -
I haven't read your other posts, but I want to make sure you know that celiac is not a wheat allergy. It's an autoimmune response to gluten which is wheat, barley and rye. Autoimmune is far more serious than allergy long term even though a severe allergic reaction can be life threatening. Your immune system is literally destroying your own intestines every...

Although I got relief from certain symptoms right away it was 6 months before I had ONE symptom free day and now I'm about 9 months out I feel pretty great. Celiac is an autoimmune disorder. There is devastation in your small intestines. It's not like an allergy where you just produce histamine and it goes away quickly. You've got a small army of construction...

ARCHIVED How Can We Have A Life?
sandsurfgirl replied to lucia's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Wanted to add, you'll be surprised at how many people go way above and beyond for you if you approach them nicely enough. I was at a BBQ place that looked like it would be a gluten nightmare. Wolicki from this board and I went out for drinks. Well I got really hungry and she looked at me like I was crazy. I asked for the chef and explained my situation... -
ARCHIVED How Can We Have A Life?
sandsurfgirl replied to lucia's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Grieve what you have lost, and then look your fear in the eye and refuse it! You must refuse to live in fear of getting glutened. Look at it this way. Now that you are gluten free, you are healthy and feeling good most of the time. So if you get glutened by accident it will be a small incident, whereas before you were sick all the time and only feeling... -
ARCHIVED More Trouble At Pf Changs?
sandsurfgirl replied to jmreed's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I got glutened at Pei Wei, which is an offshoot of PF Chang's. They got me BAD on July 4th weekend.I was sick for a week. Then last night I bit into a wonton noodle in my gluten free salad. I spit it out and washed my mouth out so I only got trace amounts but I still had pain, bloating and anxiety. I'm never ever eating there again. It's not worth it... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Is So Humiliating Sometimes
sandsurfgirl replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think she wanted to know if it was safe to dance. That's the funny thing too. I used to be a professional dancer and dance teacher (legitimate theatrical dancing, not THAT kind LOL)and I've been doing salsa and other latin dance for 12 years. So I was flying around the dance floor. I have a lot of very advanced friends I dance with and they spin me like... -
I'm never eating at Pei Wei again. I ate there for months frequently off the gluten free menu with no problem. Then on the weekend of July 4th they got me BAD. I was sick the entire weekend. I gave them another chance and explained the manager that I'm very sensitive in my reactions, I got sick once before and please be extra careful with my meal. So...

ARCHIVED Celiac Is So Humiliating Sometimes
sandsurfgirl replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks guys. I love this forum! Sadly I do have a belly. I'm overweight and quite a bit has settled there, so when I'm bloated it's even worse. But it's not round and all like a preggo tummy. At any rate, you just don't ask that. I'm laughing about the discussion about a preggo woman in a nightclub. I danced with my first one until I was 8 months along... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Is So Humiliating Sometimes
sandsurfgirl posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had a very emotional night. I was so bloated from getting glutened by Wendy's chili (I'm sure they Cc'd it with crumbs or something), but I hadn't gone to my salsa class for a month so I went anyway. It's at a night club and we stay and dance after so everyone is very dressed up. Dress to impress and all. I was talking to a male friend of mine and then... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Diet Isn't Working Anymore
sandsurfgirl replied to Teddy's mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Make sure she isn't getting glutened somewhere first. Did you switch soaps, shampoos, conditioners? All that stuff gets in your mouth in the shower and bath, gets on your hands and then you eat. Look for hidden sources. Is she sneaking foods behind your back? -
ARCHIVED Healing Process- Fatigue, What To Do?
sandsurfgirl replied to MegRie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It takes time to heal and your body goes through withdrawals. I always suggest newbies do a search on here for withdrawals and read old threads. You could have vitamin deficiencies. Usually iron, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D are the ones people have trouble with. You could ask your doctor to run a basic panel and also check electrolytes. You don't want to take... -
ARCHIVED My First 3 Weeks And Questions
sandsurfgirl replied to GypsyGirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sounds like you're getting the hang of things! My family eats what I eat so I don't cook gluten for them. I give my kids Uncrustables sandwiches and if I make the sandwich it goes on gluten free bread. I make Gluten Free Pantry Basic White bread mix (tastes better than Udi's in my opinion and way way cheaper) and they love it. They don't really know... -
ARCHIVED Anxiety, Depression, And Friends
sandsurfgirl replied to curiousgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Once I went gluten free my anxiety went away. Now if I get glutened anxiety is my first symptom. I do think it caused a strain on my friendships. I don't have proof, but I'm guessing it has. I've had celiac my whole life undiagnosed, but the anxiety came on about 8 months or so before I got diagnosed last January. For a few years before the full blown... -
I was thinking the same thing. Picky eater and "I don't want to poop my pants, vomit, have stabbing pains in my gut, massive dizzy spells, anxiety attacks and be sick for a week if I eat that," are not the same thing. I LOVE it how these jackasses don't like a "picky" eater, but I bet they like the thin bodies those "picky" eater girls have because most...

ARCHIVED Please Help Disoriented Has Stopped Me From Driving In The Morning!
sandsurfgirl replied to Liveenjoylife's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Gatorade doesn't have high fructose corn syrup anymore. There are natural electrolyte supplements you can buy at Whole Foods or sprouts. I tried quite a few of them. There are drops you can put in water, or powders in little packets. Ask someone in the vitamin section. Actually, most of the electrolyte supplements have no salt at all. Gatorade is... -
ARCHIVED Please Help Disoriented Has Stopped Me From Driving In The Morning!
sandsurfgirl replied to Liveenjoylife's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had that problem for months and my doc said it was dehydration and electrolytes. Celiacs and people with other autoimmunes disorders are very prone to dehydration. When I started being very careful to hydrate in the morning and get electrolytes first thing I improved and after about a month it went away. Funny enough, my electrolyte levels came back normal... -
ARCHIVED Gluten In Corn Dogs At Football Game?
sandsurfgirl replied to crampy girl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would assume 100% of the time that corn dogs have gluten because cornbread batter will have wheat flour in it. (unless it's gluten free of course which a stadium won't offer most likely) -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Bun In Oven
sandsurfgirl replied to K8ling's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Congratulations!! So happy for you! Good thing for those Glutino crackers huh? I wonder what my pregnancies would have been like if I had been diagnosed. Not gonna have another one to find out though! I'm good with two. -
ARCHIVED Family Frustration
sandsurfgirl replied to ilookthetype's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm pretty point blank with people and if I have to go into gory detail about D and vomiting to get them to understand and not make me sick, then I do. -
You need to get to a Sprouts or Whole Foods. You could gain 200 pounds on all the gluten free sweets and junk food out there. Glutino has some great ones. There are a version of Oreos even. And Betty Crocker has great gluten free mixes for chocolate chip cookies, brownies, chocolate cake and yellow cake. Glutino wafer cookies are SOOOO yummy!

ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed Last Week
sandsurfgirl replied to cmathews03's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Go ahead and be mad. Grieve the losses and come here to vent. We'll all be here for you. Funny, I was thinking after reading your post I bet we both had anger and grieving over exact opposite issues. You are so young, you probably feel like "Why do I have to be saddled with this now in college when all my friends are out eating all that pizza and partying... -
Good for you! I second the gluten free pantry crust. You have to mix it yourself but it's super easy and so yummy. They ought to pay me for all the times I recommend them on here. Pizza is good with pesto if you are avoiding nightshades. Fresh basil, olive oil, one clove garlic, parmesan or romano cheese, pine nuts are optional but add a nice...
