I think understandably you have a lot of fear of getting glutened like we all do. I've seen you post things about being afraid to eat out or whatever in social situations. We all have to work at getting our fear under control or this disease will be destructive not only physically but mentally, emotionally and socially. We can't let it control our lives....

I think washing his hands and wiping his face with a baby wipe or cloth is fine. That's what I do. The way I get glutened by my kids is when my 2 year old eats gluten and then takes a drink from my water bottle without me seeing her do it. It's happened to me twice now. So I have to babysit my water bottle if she's eating gluten. You don't want to...

ARCHIVED Eating Disorder Brought On By Gluten Intolerance?
sandsurfgirl replied to kdonov2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had bulimia off and on through my life and generally it was that I would have this horrible urge to binge on sweets like ice cream and then I would throw it up so I wouldn't gain weight. The urge to binge was overwhelming when it happened to me and I had to do it. Going gluten free has completely erased my urge to binge. I strongly believe that the... -
Because of my dairy intolerance I was putting soymilk into my coffee and tea every single morning, eating it with cereal, cooking with it, etc. I was using soy protein powder in smoothies. I had NO idea how sick soy was making me until I went gluten free. Everyone on the board said to cut soy and dairy too to faciliate healing so I did. The first time...

ARCHIVED How To Convince The Boyfriend To Make Our Kitchen Gluten-Free?
sandsurfgirl replied to dreacakes's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's a tough issue. You both have needs and it is a hard lifestyle to adopt. We have a mostly gluten free house simply because I do all the cooking. My husband can barely boil water. I had to ban gluten bread from my house because the crumbs were just making me sick all the time. We have small kids too and they kept getting me with their crumbs... -
ARCHIVED Best Grocery Store In Buffalo For Gluten Free Stuff
sandsurfgirl replied to mommyto3's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Not sure how expensive shipping is but there is so much online. I use a bread mix that's even better than Udi's and a third or less of the price. It's Gluten Free Pantry Basic White Bread. You can mix it with your stand mixer or a hand held beaters. Let it rise for half hour and bake. It's about $4.50 for a box and it makes a large loaf of bread. I... -
ARCHIVED Question For Those With Neurological Symptoms
sandsurfgirl replied to mommyto3's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
People give me a ration on here for my Gatorade but it works for me. I spent over $100 on different natural electrolytes and every single blinkin one of them made me very sick and then awhile later I tried them again and whammo. Run to the toilet, etc. I'm experiencing neuro issues tonight from a glutening. I think my little girl CC'd me. I have anxiety... -
My gosh I didn't experience anything like that in graduate school. That makes me shudder to think of it. I had such a great experience. I loved grad school. All my professors were pretty great except one and in the end she was alright. Don't be anxious when you're getting your needs met. Be direct and ask simple, direct questions. Don't demand, but be...

ARCHIVED 1 Month Gluten Free - Still Some Hiccups
sandsurfgirl replied to IveGotEffinCeliac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I hate to tell you this but it can take awhile to heal and your body can get all wonky for awhile. Don't hate me, but I wasn't fully well for 6 months. I did get better all the time, but feeling really good and having symptom free days took awhile. At 1 month I was still very very sick and not functioning too well. -
ARCHIVED Question For Those With Neurological Symptoms
sandsurfgirl replied to mommyto3's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
On the preggo topic- I was the sickest I've ever been in my life and my neuro symptoms were very bad with both pregnancies. I was undiagnosed with both. On the neuro topic- my neuro issues started to get better the quickest of my symptoms, but they are the quickest to come back if I get glutened. However they did take awhile to go away. Dehydration... -
ARCHIVED "gluten Free Is All The Rage Now"
sandsurfgirl replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It was sweet that she was being so supportive. I live in OC, and people tend to be health conscious and into natural health, etc. so I think there is a lot of awareness of celiac and the diet than maybe in some other places. There are gluten free products everywhere, even at all the regular grocery stores. But I just don't want people to think this is... -
Wolicki and I went to Beachwood BBQ in Seal Beach recently. We had the best experience there. The waitress was very helpful and knowledgable, but the owner personally came to our table, went over the entire menu with us and then came to check on our order. The food was great and we did not get sick!!! So OC and LA people, patronize this great restaurant...

ARCHIVED Stupid Lady At Work
sandsurfgirl replied to RideAllWays's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you ask nicely and you don't demand, 99% of the time they will be happy to accomodate you. When I waited tables I never thought someone was a PITA if they had allergies or whatever as long as they treated me with kindness and didn't demand stuff from me. -
ARCHIVED Stupid Lady At Work
sandsurfgirl replied to RideAllWays's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I understand your fear, but don't let this disease isolate you socially. You should be in there with your family enjoying the time with them. I eat out a lot and I've only gotten glutened a couple of times. I always ask to speak with the manager at restaurants. I tell them I'm sensitive so can they please take some extra precautions. I have several restaurants... -
ARCHIVED "gluten Free Is All The Rage Now"
sandsurfgirl posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
A friend of mine was being supportive and said "Well the gluten free diet is all the rage now. People are feeling so healthy when they do it." Part of me is thrilled that people are catchign on, there's awareness and lots of products and gluten free menus at restaurants. Part of me is terrified that people are treating it like a fad, so it STILL will... -
ARCHIVED I Think This Is Bigger Than Me Right Now.
sandsurfgirl replied to Aphreal's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You and a few others on this thread are new to the diet and this is totally normal when you go gluten free. If you search for withdrawals and read old threads you'll see all the crazy stuff our bodies do when we go gluten free. I went through a period where I was starving and could not stop eating. Then my tummy went wacky and I could hardly eat anything... -
ARCHIVED What Is Your Response When People Say.....
sandsurfgirl replied to sahm-i-am's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wouldn't even go for good comebacks. Just being forthright and honest. Tell them how sick celiac has made, and how sick it can make you from stories on the board. That it's an autoimmune disorder and it does damage to many systems in the body. -
ARCHIVED What Is Your Response When People Say.....
sandsurfgirl replied to sahm-i-am's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I DO tell them. I was very ill for a long long time and it got so bad I had trouble functioning. Once I got diagnosed I was so sick I kept having to go to the ER and then it took me 6 months gluten free to really feel better. I had a few friends minimize it like it was no big deal in the beginning, when I was going through major withdrawals and having such... -
ARCHIVED Gas On My Date...why? ;)
sandsurfgirl replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Glad you two are hitting it off! Gas just happens sometimes. I had it yesterday and today really bad bloating. I think my little girl CC'd me. It's minor and it will most likely be gone tomorrow. It's just what we have to deal with. -
ARCHIVED I Feel Miserable And Alone
sandsurfgirl replied to captaincramp's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The hunger at first is really a pain. I was starving for probably 5 weeks or so. I have it all journaled somewhere. I had suspicions at a young age but there was no info out there back there, or not that I found. I got diagnosed at 40 even though my problems started as a kid. Do the gluten free diet and if it works you can save yourself a lifetime of... -
ARCHIVED Tell Me About Gluten Withdrawal
sandsurfgirl replied to danaf617's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm going on 8 months gluten free and feel better than I have in years and years, if ever. But... I did have lots of withdrawal symptoms. I did get better a little bit all the time but it was about 5 months before I really felt good. I felt results right away, but 5 months til I was pretty much symptom free. If you use the search function on here and... -
ARCHIVED What Is Wrong With My Salad?
sandsurfgirl replied to ynot's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ha ha! I like a flat empty stomache too. I find the most palatable breakfast for me is fruit and some egg whites or other protein like lean ham. I do eat gluten free pancakes or toast here and there but it does make me feel sluggish and at times bloated. -
Use the search function on here to find old threads about withdrawals. There are many of them with tons of info and people's experiences. It can take awhile to feel completely better. Your body will go through some wacky phases while you are healing. This is TMI but hey we talk down and dirty here. For a couple of weeks I was pooping like 10 times a day...

ARCHIVED Want To Cry-So Frustrated!
sandsurfgirl replied to lvpriest's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes I am. That is my opinion. I personally do not believe in gluten intolerance. That's my personal belief based on a lifetime of experience and reading the experiences of many many celiacs. I think gluten intolerance is just baby celiac waiting to get ugly. I was so sick I thought I was dying when I got diagnosed with celiac. I was mostly bedridden for... -
My reaction is a weird one. I used to love Coke, Pepsi and Barq's root beer. Now they all taste like soap and chemicals to me since I went gluten free. The first time I tried soda again after diagnosis I got it from a machine at a fast food place. I thought they had run chemical cleaner through the lines and not rinsed them. But I tried it at a couple...
