  1. I don't agree with this at all. If I'm going to go on a date with someone I don't know I do not want to hear their medical history before we've even shared a glass of wine. It's TMI and totally inappropriate. Being the guy, Jason has control over where they go anyway so he can call ahead and plan to go somewhere that will accomodate. It's not hiding something...
  2. Anxiety became one of my worst symptoms in the year before diagnosis. I had anxiety attacks all day long for no reason. After only 2 days gluten free they went away after suffering for a year! Now if I get glutened anxiety is my first symptom. I could care less what the literature says. The lit is wrong so much of the time. Many of us on here have anxiety...
  3. I went straight to the store manager right away and she not only pulled it off the shelves, she sent the sample lady home. Sprouts doesn't want to hurt their reputation for being a good celiac resource. I emailed Sprouts corporate office. The company emailed me back and said that the soy sauce they use is Kikkoman and it contains less than the 20ppm...
  4. Jason I was wondering about you and how you were doing. I am so happy for you with the changes you have made. It's really apparent in your post that your stress level is lower and that you have come to terms with this disease in many ways. You seem much more at peace. Good for you! I think what you're getting at is the crux of this disease. How do we...
  5. I was at Sprouts and there were samples of barbecue sauce. The label said gluten free but I went ahead and read ingredients because of my other food intolerances. It said on the label "contains wheat" and in the ingredients it listed soy sauce with wheat in it!!!! I started to cry. If I had eaten it based on the gluten free label I would be sick for...
  6. Yeah no freaking kidding. I got glutened on the Friday before the 4th of July. It took me 5 days to get over it. I had a pool party to go to Saturday the 3rd with friends I haven't seen in a year and the party was at my house on the 4th. While everyone else was enjoying themselves at the pool party I was white knuckling it because it felt like someone was...
  7. having them do it first is a great idea. In the protestant church, you don't go up in front of the church. The ushers bring a plate around. The cup isn't one communal cup. It's a bunch of little plastic cups and you take one from the tray. So in that sense, I was able to have some anonymity. I took the cup and not the bread. However, in the protestant...
  8. I'm with you on that one. I've done a lot of reading about how bad it is that our water is flouridated now. I just filter my tap water. I don't have the energy to distill it.
  9. I know. I had a gluten free cracker in my purse. It's just the idea of it, you know? They use an actual loaf of bread at my church and everyone breaks a little piece off. It's symbolic and I know God understands, but I just felt awkward passing and not taking any. Celiac takes a lot away from us and this is just one more thing I can't do and it means something...
  10. Technically gluten intolerance and celiac are not the same thing although us celiacs know that gluten intolerance is often baby celiac just waiting to become full blown. You know why this topic irks me? Because we are some darn sick people here with symptoms ranging from annoying to deadly. Non celiacs give so many of us a hard time, saying it's in our...
  11. My church does communion about once a month. We've missed church a lot since I was diagnosed 7 months ago. There were months when I was too sick to go. So today was the first day I was in church during communion. I cried because I couldn't take the bread. I know that God knows. It's not about that. It's just so sad to me that I'm excluded from that.
  12. No it's not in your head. There's probably flour in the air all over the place in that bakery. Once you are gluten free the reactions to gluten are faster and stronger. It sucks but it's the way it is. I got CC'd by some fries they said were in a dedicated fryer but later found out they weren't. After a small handful, 10 minutes later I had a major...
  13. Yes because those cavemen lived for a really long time, like what- 20 years? It's a disease. Lots of people don't have it. There are symptoms. All that "grains are toxic because millions of years ago they didn't eat it" stuff has no real science behind it. People have subsisted on grains for a very long time. The development of civilization, technology...
  14. I know the original poster said it worked out fine but unless it's a complete emergency and you have no other choice but to eat sand, I would not do this. Even if you don't react you're getting glutened.
  15. My kids are 2 and 6, so they still eat really messy. I had to go gluten free in the house because they were constantly glutening me with crumbs. I would not cook gluten for the rest of the family. There are plenty of good subs they can eat and then they can have gluten outside the home or in prepackaged foods. The best bread I've found so far ...
  16. There are some people on here who had significant damage during their gluten challenges and scary things happened to them. My doc wanted me to stay on gluten to "confirm" the positive results of my blood tests with a biopsy. I told her forget it. I went gluten free the day I got the blood test results and never looked back.
  17. I bring something for everyone to eat at the potluck, but I pull a portion out for myself and keep it in a cooler. I bought a cooler from Target that looks like a bag although for guys that wouldn't work. One of my favorite "go to" dishes for a potluck that makes a good meal for me is taco salad. You can adjust ingedients as necessary. Like if dairy is...
  18. I wish I had an answer for you. HUGS I went through this same thing for years to get diagnosed with celiac so I know how frustrating it is to get all these tests done and not get answers. I was sick off and on my whole life and never knew why. When I got the celiac diagnosis I was overjoyed! Hang in there and keep looking.
  19. Pot lucks and eating out. At home it's fine. There are gluten free substitutes for everything. I post this all the time, but the best bread I've found for the best price is Gluten Free Pantry Basic White Bread and their French bread mix. Both are easy to prepare and seem the most "normal" without costing a fortune. I don't eat a whole lot of gluten...
  20. Ooh a fellow salsa lover! Cool! I hope it stops being triggered when I get glutened. It is amazing how many symptoms are caused by celiac.
  21. A better job opportunity is always a good thing. Don't explain your whole situation. Nobody needs to know details. Everyone is familiar with food allergies so I just say I have food allergies to those who don't need to be in the know about details. There have been so many times you worried about things and then they turned out fine. If you have better...
  22. Before diagnosis gluten was causing me to have constant sinus infections, allergy symptosm even though I only had 2 mild allergies, and asthma troubles. So I got glutened on Friday and have still been recovering. I just started going out salsa dancing on Tuesday nights recently and I still felt a little under the weather but decided to go. Well as soon...
  23. I can't believe you did it 4 times. I wanted 3 or 4 kids but I just don't have the health for it. After being so sick for the past couple of years before diagnosis, as much as I would love another baby I just can't do it. I'm gluten free now but I'm terrified that I will get really sick during pregnancy again and I just can't take it. I've suffered...
  24. I used to be bulimic- binging and then purging because I felt guilty for eating all of that junk. I decided not to do that anymore, but I would still get awful cravings and then once in awhile I would binge, but not purge. I would do other things like workout a bunch or whatever, still not healthy. I've been gluten free for 7 months now and I have no desire...
  25. You are so lucky you didn't have a period while breastfeeding. I got mine back with both babies when they were around 4 months old and I was breastfeeding exclusively, no formula whatsoever. Not fair!
