  1. Say "I'm a well kept woman." There is no shame in being a housewife, stay home wife, whatever you want to call it. But I do know people judge which is just so lame. Why in the world does anybody care? What if you were a stay home wife by choice because you enjoyed the domestic life? I'm a SAHM and due to my illness I had to hire a woman to help...
  2. Bummer your plans got cancelled. I ditto what others said. If they have a gluten free menu I tell them I'm very sensitive. Can they make sure it's a clean pan, clean grill or whatever. If they don't have a gluten free menu I talk to manager never ever a server. Then I ask them to help me figure out what to eat. Tell them not only wheat, barley...
  3. Oh sorry. Didn't read right. LOL Ya know, I think we all struggle with regrets with this disease. My OB said I had celiac 7 years ago and when I went to the GI she referred me to he talked me out of testing citing a long list of reasons why there was no way my problems were due to celiac. I was thrilled! I didn't want to have to do the gluten free diet...
  4. I don't know that I would blow off a restaurant because of one employee that didn't understand you. That being said, I think Italian in general is pretty gluten heavy and tough to do in a restaurant. I go to Bucca Di Beppo and they have some great gluten free food, but no pasta or pizza. When I call to ask about gluten free options at a restaurant I always...
  5. Maybe you need to eat something at breakfast time. I wonder if salad as your first meal of the day is being hard on your digestive system. Sometimes our celiac guts just get wonky on us for no reason too. Lots of us will have bouts of tummy issues where we cannot find any source of gluten. Then it just disappears as quickly as it came. When that happens...
  6. I had horrible gluten induced panic attacks. When I went gluten free they nearly went away, but not completely. I get dizzy, short of breath, my throat is tight, feel like I can't swallow, feel like the room is spinning and I might pass out. My first grocery store trip after diagnosis I had a major anxiety attack and I left my entire cart of groceries...
  7. If you use the search function on here and read old posts about withdrawals it will make you feel better. Right now just eat clean. I have this image in my head of this army of thousands of tiny little men in your gut with all their tiny tools and ladders hammering away. They run off to find all the nutrients and good things they can get to clean up all that...
  8. I got your point. I happen to disagree with you. It's nothing personal, but when you are around here longer you'll see what that diagnosis means to people and how not having it affects them. False negatives are common on the blood tests. If you have severe reactions to gluten you have celiac disease in my opinion. It's a flaw in the testing methods that...
  9. If you are self diagnosed based on dietary response nobody else needs to know that. Tell people you have celiac disease. They don't know your medical history or what tests your doc took. And most people don't care either. Their eyes glaze over when anybody starts talking details about their health problems. I would go so far as to say that if later down...
  10. LOL! I danced for 3 hours with hardly any breaks tonight!!!! I'm so excited! Every week I get sstronger. Gluten free is my life!
  11. Thanks! It's two classes for only $10 plus dancing afterwards. A year ago I never thought I would be able to do this again. It's so amazing feeling good and getting my strength back.
  12. I won't eat anymore today and see if anything comes up by tomorrow. I have salsa dance class tonight so my main hope is no gas! It's a partner dance. I had a scary reaction actually. My tongue was tingling and my nose got very stuffy, more like allergy than intolerance. But the thing I ate also had soy in it. Recently I tried something with soy again...
  13. There are so many fast food places that offer at least a couple of gluten free items. I don't let this disease stop me from socializing no matter what it is. I would either find out what I could eat there or bring my own food. Or just eat before you go and bring a couple of snacks. If you son is only 2 years old and he doesn't eat fast food, then bring...
  14. If you are new to the diet your gut might just be in withdrawals. In the beginning it can go haywire. I would get sick from this food. Then another time a different food, even if they were gluten free. Around week 5 or 6 everything made me sick and others have gone through that too. Your tummy will adjust after your healing phase. Bacon is so fatty. Your...
  15. I thought I had a reaction to tapioca months and months ago so I cut it out of my diet. I am challenging it today. I had one bite of a thing with tapioca and waited about an hour. No reaction. Then I ate another bite and waited. Then about 4 bites. So far no reaction. Remind me of how I should proceed. When will I know for sure it's safe? It's been...
  16. And none of these idiot doctors go "Hmmmm, my patient is violently ill eating gluten. Maybe they have .... uh.... celiac disease! Let's just screw the test and give the diagnosis." But of course the morons won't do that. They want you to suffer so they can charge the insurance for an invasive surgical test. Personally I refused to do that. I had one of...
  17. Unfortunately, your tests were not valid and your results were skewed. If you cut out gluten you can get a negative on blood tests because the offending item isn't in your body anymore. You have to be consuming a lot of gluten to come out positive on blood tests as well as endoscopy. I totally disagree with the poster who said they were glad you do not...
  18. The bread I love is Gluten Free Pantry basic white bread mix and their french bread and pizza mix. You do have to make them yourself but they are easy and the pizza crust is awesome. A quarter of the price of Udi's.
  19. I have so many old threads about this. Losing gluten was like a death to me and I mourned the loss of favorite foods. I mourned the loss of freedom and not being able to just eat out wherever and whenever I wanted. I went through all the stages of grieving and sobbed like a baby over Guinness even though I've never been a big beer drinker (made me feel sick...
  20. You may believe that the antibiotics caused this but you don't know that. Lots of people take tons of antibiotics and don't get celiac. I was on antibiotics for years and years, high doses and it didn't make my celiac any worse. There were times my symptoms disappeared for awhile during that. You probably had celiac the whole time and didn't realize things...
  21. I agree about getting counseling if you are still depressed about it. Also is your information correct about what does and does not contain gluten? There is some big misinformation out there that makes people think they can't eat things that are safe. Caramel coloring is safe but people think it's not. Maltodextrin is safe. Go to the safe and forbidden foods...
  22. There are so many places that will accomodate you, why are you staying home cooking and cleaning? Do the calling ahead of time and plan places you can eat out. Call managers ahead of time. Recently I was so stressed because a big group of friends were in town and they made reservations at Bucca Di Beppo, Italian! How could I eat at an Italian restaurant...
  23. I am very direct and matter of fact about it. I will back down on any other subject but not celiac. If someone says something wrong about celiac I correct them right then and there. I suffered needlessly my whole life because of misinformation. I should have been diagnosed 7 years earlier than I was after my OB sent me to a GI suspecting celiac the GI talked...
  24. Doctors have many misconceptions and ignorant concepts regarding celiac and one of the worst ones is that they think you will get better quickly after going gluten free. It can take months and you can go through all sorts of weird phases during the withdrawal and healing phase. I found an article a long time ago about how gluten acts like an opiate on...
  25. I haven't braved a buffet since being diagnosed 8 months ago. If I do have to go to one in the future I will ask to have something prepared specially for me in the back. I'm going to avoid them as much as possible now that I'm diagnosed celiac for all the reasons mentioned. It's shocking what things have gluten in them. Grilled meats are the scariest because...
