ARCHIVED Gluten Free Spices
kareng replied to TiaMichi2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I can't imagine why a company would " dust" mustard seeds with wheat? Wheat flour gets sticky when damp so it couldn't be to keep them dry? Maybe to poison the 1% of the population that had Celiac? ( sorry bad joke. I have a relative that likes consiracy theories and he thinks the govt puts gluten in his food to keep him under control) Anyway, sometimes... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Spices
kareng replied to TiaMichi2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There wouldn't be gluten in whole mustard seeds. Maybe some other ingredient is the problem? Maybe mustard is the problem? -
Are you anemic? If you are anemic, you can't get enough oxygen in the blood to make your body happy. Iron & B 12 can help with that.

ARCHIVED Glaceau Products (Vitamin Water)
kareng replied to alucard4545's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I asked this about 2 years ago and got the same response. Always good to have updated info. I have not found gluten in mainstream " soft drinks" . It's still good to check the ingredients. -
ARCHIVED Progresso Soups
kareng replied to LDJofDenver's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you are new to the diet, everything and anything could bother you. Your intestines are a mess and they are trying to heal. It's also possible that something else in the soup or that you ate bothered you. If a food makes you feel bad, don't eat it. That does not mean it isn't gluten free. -

A bunch of links to stuff about gluten-free college. I haven't read them so not sure how helpful they will be. Open Original Shared Link -
Oh please! Can we kindly stop this? It's unkindly giving my head an unpleasing headache. I really want to know, does anyone have good luck with these shakes? I will be traveling with high school students and I ' m sure we will stop at Mc Donald's & I would love to get a shake. Even one full of artificial colors and corn syrup!

ARCHIVED Insides
kareng replied to BarryC's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Much to my chagrin, I shall address the " itchy bum" issue. This is personal experience and my OB/ GYN 's thought mixed together. When our gut isn't processing the food properly, the stuff coming out the bum side can be particularly irritating. If we are having gas, and ,perhaps, some leakage ( even very tiny), it can irritate. Her suggestion is that... -
ARCHIVED Is All Rice Gluten Free?
kareng replied to alucard4545's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
And Lisa should know....she hangs out in Rice bars. Trying to meet rice! Seriously, most Celiacs are fine with plain old rice. Flavored ones might have wheat flour. -
ARCHIVED Recipe: Cheesey Quinoa Bites
kareng replied to BabsV's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Of course not! SHe even says she subbed out for a gluten-free flour . This is a Celiac website, after all ! When you have a recipe like this that just needs a couple of spoonfuls of flour to help it stick together, you can sub any all purpose gluten-free mix or probably rice or potato flour. -
Back to the shakes..... I guess I always thought they were just the vanilla ones with green food coloring. I always wished they would be mint flavored. The McD's website has the ingredients for the "Shamrock syrup" so I guess it has its own flavor.

Colorado State. Probably the other Colorado ones, too. gluten-free is well recognized in Colorado. They have gluten-free food at every meal. Anyone can have it. My son says the gluten-free stuff is better because they are really careful with it. No gravy spoon grabbed to scoop up green beans, etc. they have a gluten-free chocolate cake that everyone... -
ARCHIVED Unbelievable!
kareng replied to lc1333's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
To get your insurance company to pay for your kids to be tested, they need a reason. If the mom has Celiac, that's a reason. That's why I hoped that your doc would listen to some doctors who know about Celiac. -
ARCHIVED Help With My Genetic Results Please
kareng replied to 3groovygirls's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you want to have enough antibodies to show up on the blood test after being gluten free for years, you need more than an 1/8 of a teaspoon. these people are talking about people on gluten-free diets. I don't want anyone to think that less than 1/8 tsp of wheat is OK, because it's not. -

What's the point of the " gold standard" ? ( banging my head on the table) Look up the Celiac Center in Chicago...( www,cureceliac.com or something like that) . They have a question line you can call or fax your pathology report to. Maybe they would fax a note to your doc to say you have Celiac. -
ARCHIVED Sweet Pizza Toppings
kareng replied to thefreespirit's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have seen ones where they made them look like a real, pizza. Strawberry jam for the sauce, cream cheese for the cheese. Cut fruit roll-ups into circles for pepperoni, etc. -
ARCHIVED What Do You Miss?
kareng replied to celiacchef's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That's OK. We can talk to each other. Maybe someone will see what we miss and have a recipe for us. Like the pirogies the other day. -
I think yellow rice is usually yellow because of saffron. Could you ask the restauraunt how they make it? Some places will tell you if you ask nicely.

ARCHIVED Sweet Pizza Toppings
kareng replied to thefreespirit's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We always did a fruit pizza using a sugar cookie crust. You could use the Betty Crocker choc chip cookie mix 8 oz softened cream cheese 1/3 cup sugar 1/2tsp vanilla Mix together and spread on the baked crust. Arrange fruits in pretty patterns. Melt 1/2 - 1 cup of jelly or preserves. Dot on top. If you use apple jelly, it's nice and clear... -
One farmer says to another farmer that he had to shoot one of his cows? "Was it mad?" asks the other farmer. The farmer replies "Well it wasn't very happy about it."

The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
kareng replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I think the rice pasta gets too mushy. I can't remmeber the brands but there are some rice mixed with corn that stand up better. The quinoa kind might, too, if you like it. -

I have done that on the iPad. I usually ask someone to put a plus there because we can only do it once. Edit: Birdwatcher & i I were posting together. I can't take it off but I could put a plus and put it back to neutral. -
