  1. I did the same it the first couple of months. Ate a friends "gluten free" meal in her gluteny kitchen all to be nice. Never again! We have to learn the hard way don't we!!! I have another friend that wanted to cook for me and went out and actually bought new pots and pans to use just for me. All good till I watched her brush some crumbs off the counter...
  2. Amen!!! Ahhh the replies the float thru my mind as I am smiling....... lol!
  3. This is usually my approach as well. It is wonderful if they can accommodate me but in large events like that I just wouldn't feel comfortable. I call it picking my battles. It's just far easier and safer to pop out your own stuff and save the battle for something else. I have a food issue and don't feel that others have to bend to my way.
  4. Went to a pot luck event last night with a large group. I pulled out my baggie of stuff and someone commented on why I wasn't eating with everyone. Of course the table goes quiet! I just said "I have celiac which means I can't have any wheat, rye, barley or oats and can't risk cross contamination so I bring my own stuff and then I can enjoy your company...
  5. That sucks!!! Those that are gluten intolerant and cheat can really make it hard on those that are Celiac!!!
  6. I admit it was very difficult at first but after three years I have learned (or am still learning!) that I control celiac, it does not control me. I go out to eat with friends and if they choose a place I can eat great, if not then I eat first or take along something for me. Same goes for parties where I always take my own. I try to take similiar foods...
  7. Hmmm.... I never watch those shows and guess I won't after reading all of this! One day their ignorance will grab them by their >>>!!!

    ARCHIVED Starbucks?

I often order plain black coffee. Sounds really good right now!

    ARCHIVED Mcdonalds

In my opinion - no. Fast food is risky due to cross contamination. Hands touching buns, touching fries, touching.... Most of the employees are kids who don't understand and don't really care. Not worth the chance.
  10. I have to agree with this!! It is too easy to make Celiac the excuse and before you know it you aren't invited to functions any more. I made some Big mistakes in the beginning because I was scared, uncomfortable, new and ....... We lost out on invitations to friend's homes and dinners out. It has taken some apologies and time to be "accepted" and have...
  11. First, your family. That's a choice only you can make and I have to agree with others that you can't make celiac the main reason. Family is family, we don't get to choose and you don't want to do something yoyu might regret later. Second, for eating... I often go to Mexican with friends but I don't eat as don't feel comfortable wih the cross contaminaion...
  12. I'm afraid I am with you on this one. had a life time of drugs and side effects. For myself, I will stick with the diet. Not keen on the restrictive diet, but overall it is preferable to a drug.
  13. So very sorry to hear of your loss. Loosing one;s parent is so hard. I lost my mom five years ago at the age of 77. Looking back I firmly believe she was undiagnosed celiac. With Fibromyalgia, diabetes, unbearable excema (DH) on elbows and knees, bouts of constapation/diarrhea, vomiting and stomach cramps after meals, asmtha to mention just a fewof...
  14. I am 3 1/2 years gluten-free and still struggle with constipation, although it is getting better. Healing takes time and can take longer depending on your age, how long you have been sick and so on. That doesn't help tho when dealing with C.!! I have used all of the suggestions given (water, water, water is a biggie) and walking. That really helps as...
  15. Hate to be the bearer of bad news here...but....they prepare everything right along side of and with the gluten pizzas. They may have a gluten-free crust but the preparation and handling makes it no longer gluten-free. I wouldn't.
  16. My response is just to say thanks, i appreciate the thought but I have had to make it a rule to only eat things prepared in my own kitchem/not at anyone elses kitchen....
  17. I wouldn't go there just on principle! Same as I feel about Martha Steward. After her nasty comment about those with food issues i would never buy anything of her!!
  18. Fast food is always iffy at best. There is just too much possiblity of corss contamination. Even the potato - Wheat hands may have handles it at some point. Just not worth it, at least for me. Now, a frosty? I'll have one!
  19. LOL !!! Sorry.... just loved your response!!!
  20. Your story sounds a lot like mine...... After going gluten-free my constipation became worse to the point where it was only an enema that would offer any relief. I was thirsty, thirsty, thirsty even getting up during the night to guzzle a full bottle of water. And tired, sleeping 10 to 12 hours a day. I had all vit levels checked...everything. Walking...
  21. Just going to throw in my 2 cents here....... check out grain free dog food. We use Natural Balance for our puppies and don't have to worry about doggy kisses. Everyone has to work it out for themself but to me separate kitchens just don't work well. Gluen Free cereal is cheap, eggs, potatoes, rice, quinoa, veggies, fruit, cheese all cheap. It's the...
  22. I have had good luck at some of the chain restaurants like Oiutback, P.F, Changs, Texas Roadhouse, red Robin but they seem to be more aware and do offer a gluten free menu. When i go to a new place I usually ask for the kitchen manager and that seems to help. That's no to say that I haven't been served a salad witgh bread but returning it and reminding...
  23. Thank you all for your responses. I will forward this on to her. She lives in the Seattle area and was diagnosed through a blood test. To get her to go gluten free.... sigh. I will work on it!
  24. When I order out I always say that I am celiac, that gluten free is not a fad for me and that I will get sick if I eat any gluten. Said with a smile and a few questions on how they deal with cross contamination and there usually isn't a problem. The fad is good and bad for us celiacs......
  25. From what I understand......the damage is going on and steadly becomes worse until a trigger throws it into a fiull blown attack. I may be wrong..... but from what I have read it is slowly going on. From my own experience I can say that eating gluten slowly started to make me sick. I would have a sandwich and then feel sick maybe once a week, then it was...
