I too used to be able to drink (wine) with no problem.... then I got sick. I wen through about 6 months of not drinking (and pouting ) before I tried it again. It was another six months or so before I could do much more than a Small glass without becoming totally drunk. Your body has gone throug hmajor trauma and like anything else needs time (sometimes...

ARCHIVED Daughter Diagnosed With Rheumatoid Arthritis
cap6 posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My daughter, who is 38, was just diagnosed wih Rheumatoid Arthritis. I am celiac and I am very sure that my mom was undiagnosed celiac, she had every sympton in the book! Has anyone experienced a connection between the arthritis & celiac? She has no medical insurance so there can't be any further testing. She was diagnosed through a free clinic... -
ARCHIVED How To Know If It's Really Gluten Free?!
cap6 replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I used to eat Chili & potato at Wendy's untill i looked around and thought this very same thing! Even tho the potato is wrapped & uncut gluten hands may have touched it at some point. For me, it's just not worth the risk any more. All fast food is out...... except a Wendy's frosty and I wrap a napkin around the cup! -
Ask next time you eat there as many of the Red Robin's now carry Udi hamburger buns. If they do, the kitchen staff is required to go through extra training on handling gluten free foods. They toast the buns but they are done separately.

Alot of all inclusive resorts have chefs that are well versed in providing meals for all kinds of food allergies. Contact the resort. The first big vacation we took after I was diagnosed was to a resort and it turned out that one of the cefs was celiac. He cooked for me the entire time! A real treat,.

ARCHIVED Amazing Service At Red Robin In Minnesota
cap6 replied to Auriana81's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
So far I have been at various Red Robins in California, Oregon, Washington and Idaho and had excellent service at all. I usually ask for the kitchen manager just to be sure that they use separate fryers, etc. Most of the RR's use Udi's buns. It's a treat! -
ARCHIVED "special" Foods And A Celiac Mindset
cap6 replied to archaeo in FL's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's interesting how our thinking changes as we progress through the months/years as gluten free. What seemed like a 'special diet" isn't really, it's just good solid healthy eating. First our home was mixed (my son lived with us), then we were totally gluten free but now we have hit at a happy compromise. (It's only taken 2 years!) The home is good solid... -

ARCHIVED Could Going Gluten Free Help Me? (Add)
cap6 replied to Dandelion123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I couldn't agree more! omeprazole/prilosec is nasty stuff. My doctor put me one it almost 2 years ago, 2 pills per day and it has taken me over a year to wean off of the stuff. I am stuck at 1/4 pill a day. Someone on this site warned me and said to wean off of it and they were so right. If you try to quit cold turkey the reflux will get worse. It's... -
ARCHIVED Mashed Potatoes In A Box
cap6 replied to learning2BGF's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The instant stuff isn't really that nutritious bu if you really want some (and they sure are fast!) some of the Idahoan poachages say gluten free on them. just read them as a couple of kinds are not ok. -
Just a thought, but Udi's has a new mille chia bread out that is really very good. My partner has switched from the nasty (lol) gluten bread to it and is very pleased.

ARCHIVED I"ve About Had Enough Of This !
cap6 replied to ncdave's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Think of your gut as still raw and healing. It can take a long time to heal. Try to stick with very basic foods. When eating a processed food (canned item, snack food etc) the more ingredients listed on the package the more trouble for your still sick gut. A good probiotic, pure aloe (liquid not gel), L-glutamine as suggested as some good things to... -
I have to agree here with everyone else - hubs and everyone else can get through one meal without gluten bread and gravy. We get through every single meal without gluten, right? You may want to think about starting out with your friends and family right from the start - your home=gluten free. It may be hard the first couple of times but eventually thy...

ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Dining & Traveling With Other Allergies
cap6 replied to amahones's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
We travel alot, but in our RV which saves me a lot of worry. When we do dine out I always look for place I know has a gluten-free menu like Red Robin, PF Chang, Outback ec. I usually ask for the kitchen manager and state that I am celiac & not eating gluten-free as a fad or diet choice. If they respond in a knowledgable way explaining thier CC prevention... -
When eating fast food it can be as simple as someone touching a flour tortilla and then touching your corn one. You have to think about the cross contamination along with the food item.

It is frustrating when friends insist that they can cook gluten free. Well, maybe they can cook gluten free but can they cook cross-contamination free?? -

To Nor_Tx ("I think I am going to get a tatoo on my forehead that says. "No Aloe Vera will not cure my Colitis and no Acupuncture cannot cure my gluten intolerance") LOL !! -
I throw in a tote bag things like tuna & crackers or cheese, nuts, fruit or even a sandwich. I have a small thermos (snack size) that is good for (very mild for me!) chili or other warm food. I also have a leter from my doctor that states I have celiac and must eat gluten-free in case I am ever stopped but have only needed it once.

I'm not worried about kids in our own home as we offer gluten free snacks and have no problem asking mom's to wash their little hands, it's at their own home or camping etc that i worry about. Thanks for all the feedback.

I have been gluten-free for over 2 years and feel a litle silly asking these questions cause I think that I should know the answers (!!) but here goes: For mom's for small children: I don't have small kids, mine are grown and my grandkids are of an age that they understand gluten & protecting me from it. That being said we have started doing activities...

Congratulations! Grandchildren are so special. I have four and what amazes me is that the two oldest (16 & 19) still like to "hang" with us. Cuddle up grandma and enjoy!!!
