  1. This makes sense to me if you're self diagnosed. I just don't think I can legitimately say I have celiac when I had very careful and thorough testing show otherwise. That said, who knows what future research will prove and my doctor said she thought there were degrees of gluten intolerance. I'm happy to stick with that term. I sometimes mention gluten ataxia...
  2. I tell people that I'm really lucky that I tested negative for celiac since it's such a serious autoimmune disease but I don't eat gluten anyway because it makes me super sick and I feel amazingly better without it. I find that by putting it that way they are happy to hear I dodged a bullet but are still concerned enough about my symptoms to be supportive...
  3. I had cheese last night that had an anti-caking agent, but the ingredients were specified (corn starch and something else) so it was gluten free. I'd heard mention of it here so it was interesting seeing it, especially since it made absolutely no difference to the stickiness of the cheese which was no more or less sticky than other grated cheeses. Seemed...
  4. It's an interesting question. I feel, after being gluten free only 4.5 months that even thinking about cheating is dangerous. I'm the kind of person who can't stick to a diet for more than a few hours so I'm really proud of myself for being so strict. I dont' think I could do it without this forum though. It was reading the posts here that really made...
  5. I'm going to miss chex when I go back to australia - it's been a lifesaver! mmmmm, yummy!
  6. These are both great suggestions. I'm currently on holiday in the US and it's been hard avoiding cross contamination in my friend's houses. Much harder than I thought it would be. All those touching options, stuff in the air..I just know that crumbs from their toast and flour from the waffles they made while I was making jacket potatoes must have been getting...
  7. On a continuum is a good way of describing it. I couldn't do those things either, but apparently, I don't have it to the degree of it being an autoimmune disease. Though my balance has been shot lately, I'm getting glutened over and over on my trip so glluten intolerance is worse than just gastro stuff. So yes, a continuum!
  8. Ohhh, she's giving gluten intolerance a bad name! I test negative to celiac but I get really sick if I get contaminated. I feel rotten right now and I can't even work out what got me
  9. I spent a morning selling girl guide cookies recently. It was amusing me to be selling 'poison' to other people. I've had quite a few gluten dreams. Meh, they make a change from my usual repetoire of anxiety dreams! I think the best was being chased by cupcakes on little legs.
  10. I'm currently on a 4 week trip, about 10 days in. It is hard but I won't let it spoil my enjoyment. I wasn't worried in my hotel room because I figured they clean and the hotel staff aren't eating on the job. The first 5 days in a hotel were fine. I had a lot more trouble on the train, I was in a sleeper and meals were included and I didn't want to go ...
  11. I'm at the end of day 3 of a month long holiday in the US. I went gluten free just under 4 months ago. It hasn't been too hard so far, but that's because I live alone, haven't had any social events I couldn't control and am lucky to have a reasonable number of eating out places to choose from that offer gluten-free meals (though that said, two of them have...
  12. I find that worrying. I was at burger place that does gluten free buns and they were very careful to warn me that the fryer was shared with breaded products and therefore a risk. Of course,I'd only been gluten free for a short time and I was stupid curious enough to want to test it and I found out the hard way that they (and all the warnings I'd read here...
  13. I reckon they would and probably not even make you get too many at a time either. Butchers often do special orders, my mum always asks for a particular cut for when she makes roast beef. They'll probably be flattered that you love it so much and it's nice for them to get feedback on what the customers want, they could only tell otherwise based on sales and...
  14. My situation is very much like yours srall and I try to handle it the same way. All I really ask is for people not to be offended. Please don't buy me special food or go lots of trouble, just let me do my thing without a guilt trip and I'll be fine. That said, I haven't eaten at relative's places yet. I flat out told my dad I wouldn't be eating at...
  15. I start to feel really tired and then about 2 hours later I get really bad stomach pains and D. Afterwards it depends on how badly I was glutened. When it must have been a tiny amount because I can't work out what happened, I'm usually ok if I have an early night. The time with the frying oil I was sick for hours with D, managed to fall asleep on my tiny...
  16. Just wondering if anyone has had recent experience with amtrak meals? There look like options that would be safe by ingredient, but I am not sure if there is any marinade or seasoning on the fish and meat dishes.
  17. Thank you, this is really helpful. I have done a lot of research - luckily I love the planning stages of a trip - and I'm keeping a notebook with details of places to go in each city. I'll mostly be in LA, Chicago, DC and NYC (with a weekend in Roanoke with friends). It'll be my third visit to the US (and to those cities) but my first having to eat...
  18. I am so glad to hear you had such a nice time - I am a born and bred Sydneysider Also your perspective on how easy it has been is good for me since I will be travelling to the US soon. Since the aussie dollar is VERY strong right now so I would have thought you would find Australia quite expensive... when it's like this I find the US cheap. So interesting...
  19. Hi Christopher and welcome! I'm glad you found this board, I find the support here to be wonderful and it's really helped me. Things will get better. It is a lot easier if you can avoid the stuff you can't have - smelling the fresh bread at the supermarket can send me into such waves of dizzy longing I can't bear it - but you don't want to isolate yourself...
  20. It's an interesting question. I'm single but I don't date - haven't for years. With friends I find it easiest to research a few places and then get them to pick, and I guess I'd do the same with a date. In my experience, guys like it when you can pick a place, it takes the pressure off them choosing. And I'd tell them early on so they didn't get ideas...
  21. Well, to be honest I guess I did too. I read the Paleo Diet book at Christmas and it made sense to me and I gave up all grains in January and felt fantastic. When I started slipping and eating them again, I eventually worked out my issues were with gluten. I ate gluten for 4 months during testing, and then went totally gluten free. It doesn't matter if I...
  22. Wow, that is fascinating. Thanks for sharing. I'm so glad you felt so much better and I hope you can get back to that soon.
  23. Oh man. That sort of publicity just causes problems. I'm convinced gluten is evil, but that doesn't mean replacing regular cake with gluten free cake is a good health choice! I was in the pharmacy the other day and I could hear the assistant saying something about "all this gluten free nonsense" and doing stuff to "capture the gluten free market"....
