  1. Raven's totally right. Notice I didn't say "you don't have celiac". The antibodies don't always make it from your intestinal lining to your bloodstream for the doctors to find. It's good to try the diet anyway.
  2. As far as the flour, I don't know about you but I have a hard time handling it without it getting any of the fine dust in the air. When you stir in fluid, you tend to throw up more dust. The dust will settle everywhere in the kitchen. My sister-in-law had the great idea of measuring and mixing Bisquik for the kids' pancakes outside. (They are picky eaters...
  3. I assume gluten-free helps you feel better? You really haven't said one way or the other. It sounds like you got horribly sick in your first post, and if that was partly caused by gluten then you absolutely need to try the diet. If you feel a lot better, challenge cautiously as you may cause yourself a lot of problems. We forget some of our lessons...
  4. LOL! Maybe the third time's the charm. The mix of diabetes and smoking is really bad news for his heart. It's really hard to say if he'll be able to get off the meds, but I suspect he won't unless he quits smoking and even then he may need some. As for stopping smoking, nicotine cravings are fierce. If he couldn't handle gluten withdrawal, the smoking...
  5. Enterolab doesn't "rule out" anything! People can have celiac with "non-celiac" genes, and not having antibodies is no guarantee they won't appear in the future. Enterolab might pick up some antibodies now, but it's not entirely clear what the stool antibodies mean anyway. Best thing to do is try the diet with your son and see if it helps his ADD, and...
  6. Hello there. Your test means you have normal amounts of IgA overall and no celiac antibodies in your blood.
  7. Hmmmm.... Here's the thing. I was having all sorts of allergic reactions to dairy, shellfish, soy, and wheat. Mouth itching, asthma, rashes, GI trouble, plus delayed reactions to wheat, rye and barley. If I ate gluten-containing grains other than wheat I would have low-level GI trouble the next couple days. Wheat is just plain unpleasant, with an instant...
  8. You are absolutely not being a "hypochondriac by proxy" (great phrase!). Celiac runs in families so if you have celiac, your daughter's risk is about 1 in 20. With her symptoms, it absolutely makes sense to have her tested. Once the tests are done, even if they're negative you may want to see if the diet helps her feel calmer, stops the stomachaches, and...
  9. Welcome. We get so many people with skeptical spouses and family members that it's very refreshing to see you posting on your wife's behalf. As Dixiebell said, the next step in testing is an endoscopy to check for villous atrophy. Do remember that celiac tests are not very good, and there are people who get very sick from gluten and have negative celiac...
  10. Sorry, but there is no answer for you about CC. A lot of celiacs heal fine in shared kitchens. Problem is, some folks find that their TTG doesn't drop until they take their whole kitchen gluten-free. There's no way in advance for you to know, and symptoms don't necessarily correlate with the amount of intestinal damage. Do your best, and see how things...
  11. Mom used to give me hash browns or Tater Tots with eggs or sausage.
  12. What does gluten do to you when you eat it, and how fast?
  13. I don't know why you couldn't find anything in PubMed. You should be able to look at the references on these papers and turn up a lot more. I'm a little short on time right now so I hope those get you started. Note that this is a chicken-and-egg kind of issue. It's not clear whether the cancer increases B12 or the B12 increases the risk of cancer. What...
  14. I'll "third" that. I was wondering the same thing about total IgA. Are your symptoms from wheat allergic or delayed celiac-type reactions?
  15. Enteric fish oil gets around the burps. It really is helpful for neuro issues. B12 tests aren't "wrong" the same as celic. If your B12 is OK, that's a good thing. Hands falling asleep at night is a sign of carpal tunnel. Have you tried sleeping in splints? You can get pretty comfortable Ace ones from the drugstore. The splinting at night helps...
  16. Your post makes me think of people who smoke cigarettes. Some people are self-destructive. Others are not good at weighing short-term pleasure against long-term gain, especially when it's something low-risk like cancer or far in the future like osteoporosis. It's terrible when it's someone you love, but you can't control her or change her no matter how...
  17. No garlic? Sacrilege!
  18. Your B12 is fine. Stick with whatever you're doing. It sounds like there is plenty in your multi and that you are absorbing it well. Three is recent research that B12 megadoses are associated with leukemia so it's not something you want to supplement beyond normal ranges. For neuro, you want to make sure you are getting a good mix of fats. You need...
  19. There is fairly recent research showing that typical B12 supplements (not even sublingual) are effective in reversing B12 deficiency. Only people with pernicious anemia who have intrinsic factor problems actually need shots, although they do work consistently for anyone. Doctors are still using injections because it's well-studied, they know how to administer...
  20. You can have a skin biopsy right next to a DH rash for a firm diagnosis. I don't know how well it would work on a finger though. Good luck with the gluten-free. I hope it helps everything.
  21. I was in your situation. I chose to skip the testing, as I didn't want to lose a month or more of my life. I have not had any issues with doctors not taking me seriously. I'm currently up to three different doctors who have told me that it's not worth a gluten challenge and celiac testing because I'm willing to eat gluten-free and feel so much better off...
  22. I play Iron Chef when I cook and shop. Today's challenge: the secret ingredient is to remove gluten.
  23. I have a friend who got rid of chronic shoulder pain by eating raw foods. She ate a completely vegan, raw diet for about five years. Recently she has been able to reintroduce a little cooked food and dairy and is still pain-free as long as she stays about 50% raw. I have no idea what the "magic" is in the diet for her.
  24. Welcome! You seem to fit right in here. I think, given the trouble you're having finding a sympathetic doctor, that simply going gluten-free makes a lot of sense. The genetics are pretty strong, and a lot of people with a celiac parent find that they do not tolerate gluten very well. Do make sure you're removing all the gluten, including hidden gluten...
  25. Don't be sorry about questions. It's why we're here. I'm really glad to hear that you have had a medical workup. We're not doctors on this board and sometimes people try to self-diagnose health problems that really need medical care. You do have some of the symptoms of celiac, especially the anemia and vitamin deficiency and the nausea and pain. The...
