ARCHIVED Rash From Gluten?
Skylark replied to Simona19's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
So you ARE going gluten-free? I'm so glad to hear it. Please don't feel bad about asking for help and answers. This diet is a big change and the one thing people hate the most is change. Around here, we are pretty much experts at encouraging people to listen to their bodies. Your doctor does not live in your body, miserable and curled up on the... -
ARCHIVED A Few Questions From A New Celiac
Skylark replied to Aeva's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Casein can be a problem as well as lactose. The next thing to try eliminating is soy, as it's hard to digest with celiac damage. -
ARCHIVED Colic And Projectile Vomiting
Skylark replied to Chakra2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I was very colicy. I was tested for celiac as an infant because I had the symptoms but it came back negative because the doctors had already taken me off major allergens like milk and wheat. (duh) I got a little rye growing up, but not wheat because I was allergic. I'm sure that's why I'm normal height. I've always wondered whether other folks around... -
ARCHIVED Rash From Gluten?
Skylark replied to Simona19's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Didn't you say in another post you have a Marsh 1 biopsy? You have all the symptoms of celiac, intestinal damage, and you react very strongly to gluten, including delayed skin reactions and a rash that sure sounds like DH. The rash can be biopsied to see if it's DH by a doctor taking a skin sample next to an active lesion. Your doctor doesn't sound particularly... -
If your insurance is bad, remember that you do not have to get a formal diagnosis to go gluten-free for a while and see if the symptoms go away. It usually takes a few months for everything to settle down.

Costco's Kirkland brand is gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Upset And In Need Of Advice/help!
Skylark replied to kaique's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You are NOT overreacting if you're covered with a rash and feeling sick. That's one heck of a rude doctor. You'll have to call the doctor's office and ask for the antibody test results. Be sure to get the test name, your result, and the normal range for the test. You can post them here and we can help. Some of the blood tests are more definitive than... -
Basic rules are avoid every single bit of gluten you know about because some of the dratted stuff is going to sneak in anyway. Tiny amounts probably won't hurt you (nobody knows for sure how much gluten it takes to do villous damage), but the tiny amounts you don't know about plus tiny amounts you DO know about will start to add up. Removing the bun from...

Actually it is true, which is why work on a vaccine is underway. I guess you missed my post in the other thread on this Today Show segment. Here is a case study of a diagnosed celiac who was successfully desensitized to gluten. Open Original Shared Link

I eat at my local Chipotle all the time with no problems. The only thing I avoid are the corn soft tacos, because they put the corn tortillas on the same griddle as the flour ones and I'm afraid of CC.

ARCHIVED Fructose Malabsorption Is Assocated With Low Tryptophan
Skylark replied to gf-soph's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I looked at a couple of the other articles too. When that research was published, supplemental tryptophan was banned because of the EMS, and dietary manipulation in a clinical trial long enough to assess depression would be much more involved than just testing blood levels. It's a shame they didn't follow up when the supplements became available again. -
ARCHIVED Anxiety And Depression In Remission After 4 Years gluten-free?
Skylark replied to LynneM's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I was on SSRIs for many years and then ended up bipolar. I was able to taper the psych meds after I went gluten-free, but I also require a high dose vitamin/mineral/micronutrient supplement that is designed for people with mood disorders. If I try to taper off it, I start getting mild symptoms including depression or mild hypomania and sleep disturbances... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Before Conception
Skylark replied to sanamy's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm sorry about your miscarriage too. That must have been upsetting after trying so long. Yes, a lot of people around here have only gotten pregnant after going gluten-free. If you have any signs of malabsorption, like low vitamin D, B12, or iron, you will absorb your prenatal vitamins and nourish the baby better after your gut heals up from the gluten... -
ARCHIVED Is It Normal To Still Feel Nauseous/stomach Pain After 2 Weeks Gluten Free?
Skylark replied to cctaylor01's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Also, keep a food diary. I had to go off gluten, soy, and dairy at first to stop the stomachaches. I developed tolerance again to soy and dairy once things healed up after maybe 6-9 months. -
The chances you have cancer are vanishingly small. There are cancers associated with celiac disease, but they are rare. The biggest cancer risk is in folks who are diagnosed and refuse to eat a gluten-free diet. It sounds like you just developed celiac disease, so once your bloodwork and endoscopy are done you can go off gluten and you will be fine. ...

ARCHIVED Help With Something Other Than Levothyroxine/t4

I don't know whether my free T3 is low now. Damn doctor didn't test. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free...and Stressed Out
Skylark replied to srall's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I miss eating out at interesting hole-in-the wall ethnic restaurants. I'm so glad a lot of restaurants have started to become celiac aware. Happiness was finding an Ethiopian place that does pure teff injera bread twice a week if you call in advance. I also miss my homemade whole wheat sourdough bread. I haven't yet found a gluten-free recipe that's... -

ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed, Questions Inside Post
Skylark replied to Lindsay630's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome and don't panic. It's not nearly as hard as you think. You only have to buy the new cookware once, and it's always nice to have a fresh cutting board anyway. You might enjoy having a rice cooker too. I love mine. As far as things like dog food and shampoo it depends on how sensitive you are. I'm a little allergic to wheat as well as intolerant... -
ARCHIVED Help With Something Other Than Levothyroxine/t4
Skylark posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I don't feel like I'm really coming back from my thyroid flare-up. I'm dragging, depressed, cold (my teeth were chattering in 67 degree weather last night!!!), skin is still dry, and I am losing more hair than usual. I'm on a higher dose of synthroid right now and my TSH has dropped from 5.0 to 1.07. I feel better, but not well. I have an appointment... -
I have Hashimotos. I don't know whether I'm truly celiac as I was never formally diagnosed.

Oh, gosh. I hope it turns out to be indolent. Good luck. ((( hugs )))

ARCHIVED Kamchatka Vodka
Skylark replied to StacyA's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I looks to be a grain vodka, and a cheap one. I had a weird reaction to Redbreast Irish whisky, and Scotch doesn't bother me. I wonder if some distilled things are more gluten-free than others? -
ARCHIVED Fructose Malabsorption Is Assocated With Low Tryptophan
Skylark replied to gf-soph's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Thanks so much. I have full text access. It's a shame nothing more seems to have been done in the last ten years. There is no clear mechanism for the lower tryptophan in this small cohort, and it's not clear whether adding dietary tryptophan might help Mom. -
ARCHIVED I Need A Little Help! Thank You!
Skylark replied to brett31em's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi there. It's hard to say. Have you been tested for celiac? You should be able to get a celiac panel based on the vitamin deficiency and the bloating. Keep eating gluten until you get the tests, because if you're gluten-free they'll be negative. By the way, I had that perfect circle rash you describe on the inside of my elbow many years back. It...
