ARCHIVED Detoxing From Gluten
Marilyn R replied to KathrynL's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You can try a detox soak in the tub I read about in a book about autoimmune diseases: 1 cup Epsom Salt, 1/2 cup baking soda in the hottest water you can stand. Non-caffeinated herbal teas seem to help. If you have nausea, a friend suggested phenergan suppositories. I was amazed how it helped with the nausea. My doctor was reluctant to prescribe... -
ARCHIVED It's Official - I Am A Trathlete! : )
Marilyn R replied to Joni63's topic in Sports and Fitness
Way to go, Joni! Hooray! That's an incredible accomplishment! -
I break out in hives if I have chocolate. Butt Hershey's Dark Chocolate Nuggets haven't been a problem. (I'm pretty sure that my hives are caused by the soy in chocolate, because I have a thyroid issue too (parathyroid vs. hashimoto's). But I limit myself to one, maybe two nuggets every few days. Good luck!

ARCHIVED Whole Foods Versus Junk Food
Marilyn R replied to catsmeow's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
:)I'm with you, Trish! Someone wrote a letter to the editor in our local newspaper a few months ago about how everyone advises you should eat more fruits and vegetables, but it's so much cheaper to swing by the fast food joints for her and her family. I thought about that letter last weekend when I cut up a whole chicken (ew, hated it) purchased... -
ARCHIVED Does Celiac Cause Lack Of Sleep?
Marilyn R replied to dmeagan's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm so glad your daughter is sleeping well now, and I'm happy you found out while she's still young...you've saved her from a multitude of problems! Yay mom! -
ARCHIVED My Chocolate Trial Fail
Marilyn R replied to julandjo's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I've never had a migraine headache, but I know someone who says her headaches are triggered by chocolate. (But she can eat Peanut M&M's.) I have neurological effects from my gluten intolerance. I avoided soy and dairy for several months, which eliminated virtually all chocolate. Now I can have one or two Hershey's Dark Chocolate Nuggets with Almonds... -
ARCHIVED Ideas For Lunches On The Go?
Marilyn R replied to Lilith's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I can relate! I have to pack my lunch everyday because I'm on the road and can't count on a microwave or take-out. It's hard to cope with at first, but eventually it gets better. Regarding the salad... Romaine lettuce seems to last the longest and is more nutricious. I carry a small cooler to work, and insert a couple of frozen little blue Coleman Chillers... -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Marilyn R replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
We had shrimp fried rice tonight. First time in a very long time (since I cut out soy). I used about 1 1/2 T Coconut Aminos, (from Whole Foods or another health food store), added about 1/2 tsp salt, juice from a lime, a dash of fish sauce & mixed that in a little ramekin for the "unsoy" sauce. It was great! Veggies: onion, garlic, celery, carrots... -
I went to an allergist eight months after going gluten-free against the advice of my Gastro. I learned I was highly allergic to pecans, even though I'd never had a problem with them before. They're an ingredient in a gluten-free SF DF bar I'd been snacking on. The other thing I was highly allergic to is turkey, which I've never cared for, but occasionally...

ARCHIVED 100+ Ways To Make Potatoes
Marilyn R replied to GlutenFreeManna's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm embarrassed to say that I make these potatoes 5 nights out of 7. My BF is Irish and wants potatoes almost every night. When I ask him how he wants them, he always asks if I can slice them. Because he loves this: Thinly slice scrubbed, picked over (remove the nicks and bleminshes) from 1/2 lb. (about 2 cups sliced, give or take) baby yukon gold... -
ARCHIVED Time To Spice Things Up!
Marilyn R replied to JSegura226's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I love fresh serrano peppers! I chopped up a tiny serrano pepper tonight, with the seeds, along with some cilantro (which I buy) and homegrown fresh basil and parsley. I used about 5 T. fresh chopped herbs with the serrano pepper as a rub for a fish filet. (Washed and dried the filet, drizzled a bit of olive oil on both sides, added s&p to tasted,... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Soups
Marilyn R replied to Lockheed's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I think I'll love this soup! Thank you so much for taking the time to explain how to cook it! -
I still feel lucky! We're lucky we can deal with a disease merely with a diet. It's inconvenient and frustrating, but it's so much better than enduring other diseases associated with celiac disease! We are so fortunate for having been diagnosed or figuring it out on our own. I was a bridesmaid for my first cousin who died of MS in a nursing home...

Pondy, I'm so sorry you're going through this! Six days is alarming, I hope you are okay. Even though I know you've tried everything, and despite other posts, have you heated 2-4 oz prune juice, then followed it with 2 T. heated honey? I'm worried that you could have a bowel obstruction if you've gone so long without having a bowel movement, and...

ARCHIVED Need To Vent, Shoulder To Cry On And Everybody
Marilyn R replied to txplowgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Dear Txplowgirl, I've always believed in the Benjamin Franklin approach. Take a clean sheet of paper and write the titles of "Good" on one side and "Bad" on the other side. Then list what you like and love on one side, list all the bad things on the other side of the paper. Weigh them. Once you get a real perspective on what is good and... -
ARCHIVED Does Celiac Cause Lack Of Sleep?
Marilyn R replied to dmeagan's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
One of my first symptoms of being glutened is insomnia. Then I get a visit from depression. And apathy says hello. I'm strictly gluten-free, and my sleep is so much better now. So are a number of other symptoms. I appreciate good sleep most of all. -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
Marilyn R replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I wonder how we would start a petition to get love2travel on the food network, or in the food section of our local newspapers. Hmmm. Tonight we had roast beef and mashed Yukon gold taters with onion gravy and a salad of baby lettuce from the garden with mustard viniagrette. And I think I ruined my PC. I was cleaning that little valve with a toothpick... -
ARCHIVED Sick Of Being So Different
Marilyn R replied to GFMochi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think depression is part of celiac disease, and with that comes self pity and fatigue and all sorts of self-defeating attitudes. The one thing I use as a mantra is that I have a disease. A disease that is controlled by what I eat. How lucky are we that we can eat so many foods and not pay for really expensive treatments or drugs to feel better... -
ARCHIVED Feet Problems/neuropathy/amputations
Marilyn R replied to shericeliac2010's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
There was a really good article in this month's issue of "Living Without" about peripheral neuropathy and gait ataxia. If you can't get access to the article and want to read it, send me a PM. (I sent a link to all of my siblings because it explained what Mom went through to a "tee", and it is what I'm going through. Neuropathy was my first symptom, but... -
I finally found a good Multi-Vitamin with Minerals that I can tolerate. It must be gluten-free/Soy Free and Dairy Free because I'm super sensitive. I got them at a health food store: Vita Logic Daily Extra. And I haven't had a problem with Citracal either, which is what my rheumy recommended for Calcium and vitamin D. I tried to handle all of my daily...

ARCHIVED I Am So Lost Right Now
Marilyn R replied to arabookworm's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
White beans mixed with gluten-free tuna in Olive Oil (watch out for natural vegetable flavor, which could be a source of gluten in the tuna in water). If you can add anything like chopped onion, celery or olives (a friend could bring those back from the salad bar perhaps?... have that over lettuce or on it's own and it fills you up. Cheap gluten-free... -
Oh Bridget, I'm so sad that your friend did that! What's so frustrating is that if you were a vegetarian, she probably would have made you a separate dish of spagetti with marinara sauce. People "get" vegetarian. They understand kosher or kosher style. gluten-free is really tough for them to comprehend, especially with CC issues. And our diet isn...

ARCHIVED I Hear People Around Me Talking About Food Constantly!
Marilyn R replied to Kimbalou's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Everything is going to drive you nuts at first! You're going through withdrawal and you're tired and you feel like crap. And you would love to just smack your roommate/co-worker/boyfriend, somebody cares too much, someone else cares too little, it's all part of what you go through. It's normal. Not nice. (It's not nice to be normal, but right now, it...
