bartfull replied to katiesalmons's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Here in the Black Hills there is Lintz Brother's Pizza in Hermosa and now a new location in Rapid City. In Custer there is Black Hills Burger and Bun (rated by Travelocity and Trip Advisor as the BEST burger in the COUNTRY.) And there is also an Outback in Rapid City. -
The Indoor/outdoor Cat Dilemma
bartfull replied to BlessedMommy's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
My cat has been indoor only all her life. I have a screened in porch where she can go to THINK she's outside. Maybe you could install a kitty door that leads to an enclosed "run". If it opens on the outside too, you could put a litter box at the far end with a gate you could open to take care of cleaning it. Having a cat indoors will definitely cut down... -

ARCHIVED Diagnosed With Celiac But No Symptoms?
bartfull replied to elena123's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yeah, if you were diagnosed you still have it. It doesn't go away. It is a lot easier being gluten-free now than it was back then. There are some great gluten-free substitutes out there now. Please, for your future health, go strictly gluten-free now. -
It took me a lot longer than a year to feel better. I was having dizzy spells too. I remember one time (at somewhere around two years gluten-free) I was at the grocery store and I had to lie down on the floor because I knew I was going to pass out and didn't want to crack my head. It could just be that you had it longer than your daughter and so are taking...

You might be able to get a plain baked potato UNCUT at the restaurant. You should also bring some Lara bars or something similar that you can keep in your purse. I don't know what your job situation is like but your boss really should accomadate your dietary needs. When you get to the restaurant and eat just a potato or nothing at all I'm sure people...

ARCHIVED Going In For Surgery Next Week - Freaking Out At The Hospital...
bartfull replied to arrrghMatey's topic in Super Sensitive People
Jello and Gatorade are both gluten-free. MSG is not my idea of something healthy to eat, but it is also gluten-free. Glutamate is not the same thing as gluten. You may have problems with other proteins but it is not because they "mimic gluten". The only proteins that will cause a celiac reaction are the ones in wheat, rye, and barley. Many of us develop... -
ARCHIVED Newbie Experience; Advice And Thoughts Appreciated
bartfull replied to ThisIsMyUserName's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
OK, these are the blood tests the doctor should have done: tTG IgA and tTG IgG DGP IgA and DGP IgG EMA IgA total serum IgA control test AGA IgA and AGA IgG (older less reliable tests) There are some folks here who only tested positive on one of these, but they do indeed have celiac. Also some folks are IGA deficient which means the tests are... -
ARCHIVED Newbie Experience; Advice And Thoughts Appreciated
bartfull replied to ThisIsMyUserName's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi and welcome! So what tests did your doctor do? It might help if you have or can get the results and post them here. Lots of doctors don't do all the tests that are required to really give a diagnosis. But even if he did all the tests and you ARE non-celiac gluten intolerant, you are MORE than welcome here! Lots of our members are in the same boat... -
ARCHIVED Doctors Selling Info On Celiac?
bartfull replied to Pegleg84's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
None of the information given is available on the internet. Therefore I conclude that this poster "Veritas" is either a friend of Amy Meyers, or possibly Amy Meyers herself. Either way, I encourage this person to read here and LEARN something. -

ARCHIVED Allergy Free Supplements
bartfull replied to Renaye's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Shopko Naturals. Shopko is a discount department store here in the midwest. Last time I checked they didn't sell vitamins and supplements online but I just checked again and now they do! I don't see the grape seed extract there, but lots of other stuff. Here's the link: Open Original Shared Link There are other brands here but the Shopko Naturals have... -
ARCHIVED Linear Iga Dermatosis And Dapsone
bartfull replied to arcdejules's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Having this on your palms and your feet, plus your description of the pain makes me wonder if what you have is palmoplantar pustular psoriasis. That's what I have/had. Going gluten-free has completely cleared my hands and my feet are much better than they were although it is still there. At first it started to healand then I discovered that corn and soy also... -
ARCHIVED Ice Cream
bartfull replied to blahblah's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ben and Jerry's may not say gluten-free but if an ingredient was processed on the same line or facility as wheat, the label will tell you. I know that because I have checked out their peanut butter cup ice cream and those peanut butter cups ARE processed in the same facility. I like Blue Bunny ice cream. At first I could only eat their all natural vanilla... -

ARCHIVED Are Supplements Labled "gluten Free" Really Safe?
bartfull replied to Rhobhan's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The supplements I take saved my life. Because I had celiac for a long time I'm sure I wasn't absorbing much of anything from my food. And because for the longest time I was also intolerant to corn I couldn't take any supplements. It got to the point where I truly felt like I was dying. It wasn't just fatigue, and it's hard to explain but it felt like... -
ARCHIVED Dealing With The Effects Of Fad Dieters...
bartfull replied to kadege's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Just tell them that for you, gluten-free is a medical necessity. Sometimes I tell waiters/waitresses I have a severe allergy even though we know celiac is not an allergy. Most people don't understand autoimmune diseases but they do understand allergies. Whatever it takes to get them to take me seriously. -

ARCHIVED Should I Get A New Rolling Pin?
bartfull replied to abenedum's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
My Mom gave me HER old rolling pin. (She had celiac too.) And even though there was so much love in that old thing, I gave it away too when I got celiac. I gave it to a friend's daughter who was getting her first apartment and made her promise she would think of my Mom when she used it and put just as much love into her baked goods as Mom did. -
ARCHIVED Levels Of Celiac Sensitivity
bartfull replied to kimchrista70's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Please read the Newbie 101 thread in the coping section. If you continue to get low level hits through CC you are risking all kinds of complications, from rheumatoid arthritis to lupus, from thyroid problems to cancer. You need to be 100% gluten-free! -
ARCHIVED Early Stage Of Diagnosing Our 13 Month Old Daughter
bartfull replied to jc3457's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It is VERY probable that her being gluten-free before her test messed up the results. It is also hereditary so all first degree relatives should be tested. It sounds like you have a good doctor. She seems to know what she is talking about. You'd be surprised at how many doctors don't know anything about celiac. My advice would be to read as much as you... -
Here is a picture from the web. The pustules aren't VERY green, more white with a slight greenish tinge, although mine have also had a yellowish tinge. These pictures are obviously of feet, but feet get this too. Actually even though my hands have been clear for a long time, I still have some on my feet. It's a lot better than it used to be though - there...

Can you post pictures of your eczema? I ask because I had a rash on my hands that turned out to be palmo-plantar pustular psoriasis. When it is in the healing stage it looks like eczema but when it starts it looks like little greenish whitehead pimples. Corn made it even worse than gluten did. (Soy caused problems too.) Now that I have been gluten-free for...

ARCHIVED Various Tests Done So Is Biopsy A Must?
bartfull replied to GlutenFreeBuddy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Some people feel they need the biopsy (the "gold standard" for diagnosing celiac) in order to comply fully with the diet. Others need it so they can get a doctor's note for school or airline trips or so they can bring their own food to places that don't allow outside food. If you don't feel you need any of those things, by all means go gluten-free and... -
ARCHIVED Did I Get A Bad Loaf?
bartfull replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The trouble with the giant loaf is that you need to use more "stuff" to make a sandwich and then you wind up consuming a lot more calories. And it's worth it!
