  1. Give them away rather than throwing them out. I think I have fed half of my town!
  2. Dr. Mercola whole food vitamins are NOT gluten-free!! I found that out when IH pointed it out to me after I had been taking them for quite a while. They have "sprouted barley juice (whole plant)" and "wheat grass juice (whole plant)". The writing is so tiny I never even noticed.
  3. Oh please, give her a hug from me!! The precious baby elephant I used to know always wrapped her trunk around my waist while I leaned my forehead into hers. That was the way we hugged. I just KNOW that there will be elephants in Heaven because it wouldn't BE heaven without them.
  4. I went from "loose" to C for a while. I started eating a handful or two of nuts every day and that took care of the problem. You could tell your friend to come here and read up on all the nasty things that can happen if she continues to eat gluten, or you can challenge her to give it up for just three months and see how much better she feels. But to be...
  5. I bet he's young. My cat only scratches my sneakers - on those rare occasions when I get dressed up she comes running to scratch my shoes and jumps back when she sees I have my good shoes on. When she was a kitten she used to do it and it was so sweet. It's her way of greeting me when I come home. Of course as she got bigger it ruined my shoes, but I...
  6. Lara bars are my go to snack. I get the "cashew cookie" flavor. The ingredients are dates and cashews - that's it. And they are suprisingly filling. They actually have them in the grocery store here now, and last week they were on sale for $1 a piece. I bought the whole box of 16, but that's breakfast for two weeks plus a couple to keep in my purse.
  7. Oh yeah, if you can find it, Mulay's sausage is gluten-free and it's really good. I get it at my health food store.
  8. Which sausage was it? I went to their website and noticed some of their sausage contains wheat. If the one you had didn't list wheat as an ingredient, maybe it was made on the same equipment and was CC'ed.
  9. I'm SO glad!! It's worth giving up nightshades if it means less pain, and heck, sweet potatoes are better for us anyway.
  10. As someone already said, you know her and we don't. But i would NOT have been offended. Maybe she really likes Chinese and had a craving for it. Maybe she knew everybody else wanted Chinese too. I would have eaten a Lara bar or something to hold me over until I got home, and gone with them to enjoy the company and conversation. I ALWAYS try to make my...
  11. Yeah, I've got candles too. LOTS AND LOTS OF THEM!!! And in the nine-plus years I've been here, we only lost power once, and that was for about an hour. (But it's OK. I burn candles in the evening anyway. Makes for a nice mood while I play my guitar.)
  12. I keep a snow shovel in the car so in case it snows while I'm at work, I can shovel a path to the garage when I get home. I keep one in the garage so I can leave the first shovel in the car once it's parked, and shovel a path to the house. And of course I leave on in the house, in the closet by the back door so if it snows overnight, I can shovel a path to...
  13. Good for you that you are doing an elimination diet! It's hard and it seems like it takes forever, but it's the only way to figure out MOST intolerances. I believe pasta has more gluten than anything else. Not 100% sure, but I think I read that here somewhere. We can also be intolerant of certain fruits and veggies, such as nightshades (potatoes,...
  14. Withdrawal is HARD! I didn't have many symptoms of celiac (or at least I didn't THINK I did until I went gluten-free and my insomnia went away, my brain fog cleared up, my feet stopped swelling, not to mention the psoriasis cleared up as well as my minor bathroom issues.) But during the first couple or three weeks of gluten-free, I felt HORRIBLE. I had a...
  15. The same thing can happen if you scratch your itchy face, then pick up some food and pop it in your mouth. I don't use gluten-free foundation, but I DO wash my hands EVERY TIME before I eat anything.
  16. Some other things that are said to help - cherry juice, and especially CELERY SEED. I tried using just the celery seed you buy in the spice section, but it was awful. But at the health food store you can get concentrated capsules. My friend Dale swears by it. He has suffered for years, but after a few weeks with the celery seed capsules, he has been TOTALLY...
  17. The back pain gets worse with humidity, but the finger pain was just nightshades. Off the nightshades, even my back isn't too bad, and when the humidity finally goes down, I know my back will be OK too. I hope it works for you. Potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant. I never was a big fan of tomatoes, and dislike peppers. I like eggplant but they don...
  18. I've had arthritis in my spine for years now. When I lived in Connecticut where it was humid, I could never sleep more than two hours in a row because the pain would wake me and I'd have to get up and walk. After moving to this dry climate, that stopped and the back pain has almost disappeared. This summer though, it has been unusually humid here and...
  19. I've been trying for the past three hours to answer this post but those pesky customers keep coming in and interupting. Yes, it certainly sounds like celiac to me. It sounds like your doctor has been trying to help you, but like SO MANY doctors, he probably doesn't know much about celiac. You should ask him to do the testing. I'm not sure if those home...
  20. My doctor agrees that I have celiac based just on genetics (my Mom had it) and my response to the diet. I never got tested because I don't have insurance. My doctor knows that and he has been absolutely wonderful.
  21. I knew I was forgetting something.
  22. Crazy - I always considered that stuff in the "plastic cheese" category, and would never even consider buying it. But lately I have had a craving for plastic cheese! There is a burger joint locally that had the best tasting, greasy burgers with plastic cheese on them, and every once in a while I would stop there in the old days. Yesterday I wanted one (along...
  23. The things we are MOST likely to be intolerant to are soy, oats (even gluten-free oats), corn, and nightshades. Some of us also have trouble with eggs and nuts. I don't know if avoiding these things while you are healing might prevent problems or not, but you could be our guinea pig! (sorry). I discovered my corn intolerance quite soon after going...
  24. There is a thing called Reyes syndrome that kids who take aspirin can get. They used to give kids aspirin all the time. Heck, I took it when I was a kid, but now that they've discovered a link between this syndrome and aspirin in kids, they say we should use Tylenol for them instead.

    ARCHIVED Life Is Good

So glad to hear it! It is good for the newbies amonst us to hear it too. I remember how hopeless I felt at the beginning, and hearing of other folks progress made me realize that I TOO could get better. I'm NOT an "in shape" celiac so I've got no tips to share. (I've NEVER been what you'd call in shape. Not overweight or anything, but I have asthma that...
