  1. I can't stand milk substitutes. Period.
  2. Antihistimines can suppress AI symptoms. It could also be an allergy... Antihistimines give me relief after a glutening, and I don't appear to have an allergy to glutenous grains.
  3. Iodine levels in sea salt vary....sea salt is from the sea....they have seaweed there, etc. . Some sea salts state their iodine levels. I used Real Salt and it was VERY LOW. Some people prefer not to use sea salt because it's an easy elimination of potential iodine, just like switching to non-iodized salt.
  4. The only milk sub I found that did not have carageenan in it (but did have sea salt) was a hemp milk. I don't remember the brand, but I found it at Whole Foods. You can make rice milk or almond milk (and I assume coconut milk) at home. Just google for a recipe. I was able to get my milk down to just half n half in coffee or tea for 2 weeks, plus a little...
  5. Oh yowza! I had something like this...but I was in a car wreck while I had the flu. The combo of the impact of the wreck+coughing for weeks with flu=ripped cartilage on my ribs. That was some of the worst, annoying, troubling pains out there since it "travels" across the area looking for nerve endings. I'd never heard it was related to gluten (perhaps...
  6. Please, save me from articles like these.
  7. My toothpaste didn't have it, so don't know the impact. You are spitting, so who knows. Everyone is different. Carageenan was a big one for me, but may not be for you. I saw almost immediate relief from new blisters. I was hard-core LI two weeks. Then started adding it back after my sores healed. At 2 months LI (4-5 months gluten-free) i would still...
  8. A good investment is a hand-crank radio, cell phone, and laptop charger. A converter to plug cell phones in to the cigarette lighter of a car is good. Turn off blue tooth and wifi and location services in apps on an iPhone to save battery. At this point just hang on and eat the refrigerated stuff first, then the frozen.... And Tabssco makes everything...
  9. FYI milk wasn't a big iodine trigger for me, as long as carageenan wasn't added to it (some half n halfs, cream cheese). But egg yolks sure were...
  10. For me, DH runs a 2 week course - regardless. I can generally stop new blisters by following the thyca low iodine diet. Ice packs help me the most. Also, I keep the rash moisturized with Vanicream. I pack washcloths on the blisters when they fill and weep - pressure helps, too. If you've never tried meditation or visualization for pain control, now...
  11. I was so desperate to fix the rash (and knew I couldn't tolerate the preferred treatment - steroids, and that no others seemed to fix it) that I would hear shaved my head and danced naked at the World Series. So....the decision was easy. The execution took some time. I walked into gluten-free hoping it would fix the rash, and being optimistic it would...
  12. I noticed their generic Claritin is labeled gluten-free, too!
  13. Yes, it does feel good to be supported. My derm suspected DH but my rash was "morphed" by the steroid cream (he gave me the rx before I broke out, based on me telling him it spontaneously happens, when I went in to get a freckle/mole removed). I didn't have gi issues at the time and couldn't trace the rash back to food. Anyway, steroids worked for me...
  14. You need to find snacks you like, and snack every hour or so. Make them balanced -protein, carb. Also, address vitamin deficiencies you may have. Try a probiotic and digestive enzymes to help you digest your food. Try smoothies - fruits and veggies and nuts pur
  15. An allergic reaction can show up as a red, web-like rash that has tiny pin-prick "heads" that barely rise on the surface of the skin. That's how I react to sulfa and cephalexin drugs. I usually develop it on my trunk/ chest/belly/thighs. I also feel like I'm getting the flu (swelling lymph nodes) if I keep taking it). I had BOTH that rash and DH once...
  16. Uhm, yeah. Very familiar with south LA. If you fly into NOLA they do have at least one whole foods. Read the travel tips threads. Some people do pack coolers full of food and check it into baggage. You can buy hot plates that will plug in at the hotel. I've seen mini crock pots, too. You really are up the creek (or should I say bayou) down there...
  17. I'm sorry, I have a hard time reconciling all of this without being sarcastic. Yes, there are eating disorders. Yes, some people in this board may have one or more. However, if I'm to be classified as having one because I screen my food for gluten when I have a legitimate medical reason for doing so (and all that entails, which we all know can be a...
  18. People with food intolerances and/or allergies have a legitimate reason - not to mention "medical duty" to be cautious about the food we consume. I'd gladly use that guy's book to start a fire to cook my gluten-free meal that I had to "think about" to shop for.
  19. My problem wasn't the lower half, it was The Damn Rash under my arms. I had to find shirts that were loose under the arms and didn't touch the rash - let it breathe. And bras that didn't touch the rash. Try that with FF's! I do like skirts because I am very short waisted and pants are difficult to fit. And maxi dresses -forget it. They look obscene...
  20. I knew mine was healing when it got drier, didn't spread, and the itching was less. It was less swollen. After a few days I had no doubt. I had to keep mine very moisturized because the scabs were cracking and flaking...my rash was like a "blanket"...so lots if peeling. I would soften the scabs in the shower and gently rub and they would come off. Iodine...
  21. Oh, and about coffe and other acidic foods...try eating them only on a full stomach. Have coffee after dinner. Don't eat tomato sauces on an empty stomach. No sodas. Everyone has different triggers. Mine is gluten. Took me almost a year of gluten-free to figure that one out. Hits me 24 hours after a glutening. Go figure. Years of misery, pills, meditation...
  22. Steroids will make BLOOD WORK AND ENDOSCOPIES SHOW FALSE NEGATIVE. I guess it's "false", since without them you may test +. Anyway, steroids are used to send AI into remission. Any rate, the point is after YEARS of steroids you CAN NOT be accurately tested. So stop putting so much faith in them. Now, on to the good news. You may still have a gluten issue...
  23. I'd be careful about not eating my food (even if it's what you brought with you) around the area where there is construction dust. I was able to tolerate construction dust in our house during remodel (not living in it) if I did NOT eat in there. Dust gets everywhere... you can wash your hands 100 times but it still gets on them, and your utensils, etc...
  24. After experiencing "Celiac recovery" and reading others accounts; I'd refrain from judgement.
  25. Well, quite frankly, all you can do is try. Pick a group of foods and avoid them, keep a food diary, and see what happens. I certainly understand what it is to be in constant pain, and don't wish it on anyone.
