ARCHIVED "skeeter Syndrome?"
pricklypear1971 replied to andrea lee's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My husband found a natural mosquito repellant at the sports store - don't know the name but I think it was eucalyptus oil. He said it works very well. I use a Desert Essence blemish stick for odd things - bites, etc. and it seems to help with itch and pain. Also, you may try ice packs on the bites if you haven't already. Ice packs seem to help everything... -
ARCHIVED Broke Hungry College Kid
pricklypear1971 replied to glutenfreecollegekid's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Rice stick noodles in broth or stock. Add veggies or meat. Like ramen, but gluten-free. Salads are good choices - add what you like. I could live on nachos. Tostitos, refrained beans, salsa, cheese, etc. yummo. -
ARCHIVED Post Gluten Free Anxiety And Depression
pricklypear1971 replied to Keshavdas's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You might want to read this and show it to your doctor. Info about iron and Celiac is toward the bottom. Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Gluten-Free And Hypoglycemia
pricklypear1971 replied to Melissa74's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I find I need a meal and snack that contains a balance of protein (a good amount, especially if I work out), veggie, and fiber. Less fruits. Decent quantity of healthy fats. If I get off on blood sugar - feel hypo, if I can't balance it out or get tired of eating, I will eat about 20 Ghiradelli semi sweet chips. It seems to be the right amount to end the... -
ARCHIVED Non-Supportive Husband While Going gluten-free
pricklypear1971 replied to AnnieInItaly's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wonder if it's Italian thing... I say that because an ex-coworker of mine is Italian (born and raised and still a citizen) and when I started my Celiac stuff she told me how much she knew about it because so many Italians are Celiac and the kids are routinely tested. Well, she's so knowledgeable that she knows her son has a problem with gluten (was... -
ARCHIVED Is This Celiac Or Ibd?
pricklypear1971 replied to Momto2girls's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If memory serves correctly, 30% of Crohn's patients are dx'ed Celiac as well - they have both. -
ARCHIVED An Immune Disorder At The Root Of Autism (Op Ed From Nytimes)

Thanks! I think I'll wait til they refine it a little better . I'm also interested in boone repopulation. I hope they find something effective in that area, and fast. -
ARCHIVED Effects Of Sitting On Weigh
pricklypear1971 replied to plumbago's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Sat in my awful desk chair yesterday. Hits just above the bend of my knee. Made my feet and legs swell. And numb. And kills my lower back. I hate that chair. -
ARCHIVED Having Trouble Accepting The Diagnosis

I suggest going to the parents section and reading. Lots of stories there. -
ARCHIVED I Think I've Been Glutened
pricklypear1971 replied to bartfull's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The only way you'll know is to remove both, wait for it to stop, then add one back at a time. I know it is mentally difficult to go backwards like that after being do restricted, then having some freedom. I'm sure, like everyone else, that your intolerance symptoms will continue to evolve. I went from instant headache/flu to indicate gluten to 24 hour... -
Are you watching your iodine intake? Read the DH threads about iodine and DH. If you react to iodine, you can be perfectly gluten-free and still have skin flares if you eat high iodine foods like seaweed.

pricklypear1971 replied to Gemme's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yeah, the barley gluten-free beers are controversial. If I remember correctly, the testing they use isn't as specific for barley gluten as wheat gluten...so there's always a chance you're getting quite a bit of gluten. There are lots of threads on here about that testing and beer. Search for them and see if I remembered that correctly. -
ARCHIVED An Immune Disorder At The Root Of Autism (Op Ed From Nytimes)
pricklypear1971 replied to Takala's topic in Publications & Publicity
Very interesting. I haven't read the original, but this opinion piece is very thought provoking. I pick up on points other than what you mention. All in all, I find the research mentioned very encouraging. Where do I stand in line for my parasite??? -
ARCHIVED Having Trouble Accepting The Diagnosis
pricklypear1971 replied to scarlet-willow's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The only other foods I've seen mentioned that can cause Celiac type GI damage are casein and soy. You could have intolerances to the foods you mentioned but I have not seen them mentioned as foods that cause damage to the intestines. But, you also were positive on blood work. Do you know which tests? Most Celiac tests are very specific for Celiac antibodies... -
ARCHIVED Does Goat Chevre Have Gluten?
pricklypear1971 replied to peacefirst's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Unless that salad discloses its facility - meaning you can see if wheat/gluten is processed there - I wouldn't have risked the salad. That's just my personal pov. I have a "thing" about salads....my personal neuroses. They skeeve me out unless they have a dedicated gluten-free line. That said, I eat goat cheese all the time, and from TJ's - no problem... -
ARCHIVED How Do Other Autoimmune Diseases Affect Recovery Time?
pricklypear1971 replied to nvsmom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've been on thyroid therapy a while now... And since I've been gluten-free for one year now, I see distinct improvements (getting rid of that rash was a huge bonus, ya think?) but am still left with some oddball symptoms...which I don't think are gluten I think are thyroid. I am at the point now of pursuing other ideas - like low tissue thyroid levels... -
ARCHIVED Help Me With Some Cases
pricklypear1971 replied to justaguy's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Get your thyroid checked, along with all of your hormones. And if you are using tea tree oil pr lavender or other estrogenic washes, etc. you may want to ditch those, too. But, Celiac does weird things. Give it time. -
ARCHIVED Ewg: Good Food On A Tight Budget
pricklypear1971 replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yes. Think about it. How many times does the cashier ask "what is this?" about a fruit or veggie? Ever notice what qualifies as "homemade" or "fancy" food nowadays??? Usually a bacon buffalo ranch onion ring burger. From a fast food joint.... -

ARCHIVED Q For Those Who Had/has Gerd As A Symptom Of Celiac
pricklypear1971 replied to beebs's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, for me it's crystal clear. The only two times it's happened is 24 hours after eating out. Never 24 hours after only eating at home. I know for others it may not be so clear. It took twice for me to figure it out, since prior to that I would get a headache/flu symptoms and a "rock" in my stomach. -
ARCHIVED Help! I Might Be Reacting To Our Home Grown Chickens
pricklypear1971 replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Kitchen scraps are always tasty. Have you looked to see what other grain mixes are available at the feed store? Also, you could try growing little plots of plants for them. Google urban chicken farming and see what comes up. And I'm betting, since you butcher the chickens yourself (I assume) some residual grain in their gullets is contaminating the... -
ARCHIVED How Do Other Autoimmune Diseases Affect Recovery Time?
pricklypear1971 replied to nvsmom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Did they run all iron levels - circulating, ferritin, etc.? Did they run d3? It takes a while for both Hashis and Celiac - healing. You'll know when you hit tipping points. I'd suggest checking out some of the more popular thyroid self-help books from the library. Peruse Amazon for ideas. Reading will help you figure out if your doctor is treating... -
ARCHIVED One of every 100 US whites has celiac disease - Chicago Tribune
pricklypear1971 replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
I cringe every time I see that headline or any alluding to Celiac as being a disease confined by race. And the gene quotes I see saying no dq2/8 "excludes" celiac make me want to scream, too. -
ARCHIVED Effects Of Sitting On Weigh
pricklypear1971 replied to plumbago's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
The simple act of standing up burns more calories than sitting down. Sedentary jobs do contribute to weight gain... Can you add a mild workout a few times a week? That will help move those muscles that have been sitting still and help with weight loss. For me, the sitting position encourages every bad posture habit I have. I don't care how comfy the... -
ARCHIVED Severe Chronic Constipation
pricklypear1971 replied to FruitEnthusiast's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was, by no means, as C as everyone posting above but I can say that every time I pick up an exercise routine my c clears up. I started working out 4 weeks ago - and my "better" bm's became even more regular. So, that at least is consistent pre and post gluten-free. Also, sugar gives me C. It's painfully (hah!) obvious now that my diet has changed...
