ARCHIVED Mail-Order Gluten Free Foods?
pricklypear1971 replied to beachbirdie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
What about a personal chef that can do gluten-free? It can be expensive, but no more do than the average cost if eating out at a restaurant. When I go back to work I'm going to have to get help with food - I'm going to try a personal chef I found who will do gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Cross Contamination ?
pricklypear1971 replied to 49erlady's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I washed mine down with a soapy rag, washed the bowl and attachments and have been using it for a year. Turn it upside down (yeah, heavy) so you can see up inside. Clean well. -
ARCHIVED Favorite Fruit Smoothie Recipes?
pricklypear1971 replied to Ninja's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You may try Blender Girl - she does a lot of smoothies. Open Original Shared Link And a good way to bulk up a smoothie is a few spoons of nut butter. And that reminds me - I have a 1/2 flat of strawberries I've got to clean and freeze... -

ARCHIVED So Confused About My Skin Condition. Could It Be Dh?
pricklypear1971 replied to ugoglenncoco's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Could and would are two different things. Most DH Celiacs are asymptomatic except for the lovely rash. There is a link between t1 diabetes and Celiac. Are either of them on insulin? There's a chance they are t1 (or autoimmune) if they are. Also, you must be eating gluten for 2-3 months prior to testing. Also, have they given you steroids for the rash... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Labeling Vent
pricklypear1971 replied to moose07's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sorry. Yeah, I've noticed those labels in stuff I can't figure out are gluten-free or not (natural flavorings, lots of chemical names) - no gluten-free on the label or other disclosure. Freaks me out to the point I ignore them. And then they put the wrong cans in the wrong spot - so if the label says gluten-free it may be referring to something else... -

ARCHIVED So Confused About My Skin Condition. Could It Be Dh?
pricklypear1971 replied to ugoglenncoco's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Most of the research I've seen is in Japan....where they got majorly "wheated" after WWII when they began importing wheat from the U. S. under some agreement.... Anyhow, the train of thought isn't that it isn't there (and that it's so new) but that they aren't testing for it with the right tests, and it's thought to be a Western disease. There is archaeological... -

http://megannskitchen.blogspot.com/2011/09/nuts-about-chocolate-cupcakes-gluten-free.html?m=1 I don't know why the board is truncating links...but that's what's happening. If it won't go to it the recipe is called Nuts About Chocolate Cupcakes - or search "gluten-free" on the blog. I'll try it later on the computer.maybe it won't truncate it. I'm... -
ARCHIVED So Confused About My Skin Condition. Could It Be Dh?
pricklypear1971 replied to ugoglenncoco's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
You are "challenged" trying to pursue a Celiac/DH dx because of your ethnicity. They are looking at some entirely different genes and antibodies in Japan for Celiac/DH, for example. If different antibodies and genes are being activated that can make it hard for you to be tested. My advice is to search around PubMed for info on testing in Asian populations... -
ARCHIVED My Poor Son :(
pricklypear1971 replied to Mama2SandJ's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Kids notoriously test negative. Especially a 2 year old. They also could have run incomplete panels... The list goes on. Read through threads in this section for more stories just like yours. I'd suggest testing for all, except if you've been gluten-free that will invalidate testing. I'd find a good doctor who is willing to work with you, run vitamin panels... -
ARCHIVED To Sals, Or Not To Sals!
pricklypear1971 replied to dani nero's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
It could be that the longer you're off gluten the more you can take. Thats what happened with me. In the beginning certain sals set me off horribly - colorings, MSG, just odd things - coconut to a degree. Too many almonds.... Then, after a while, after my rash healed I was ok with most sals. I have noticed I can't get them ON my rash - I was using almond... -
ARCHIVED Toddler With Suspected Celiac
pricklypear1971 replied to Sesara's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yes, I would suggest testing for you, and sooner rather than later, because it may be impossible for you to back on gluten later if you go gluten-free with your son - and while it may not be important to you (a dx vs. knowing you are better gluten-free) it may be very important for your son and the new baby. And other family members.,. Are they going... -

The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
pricklypear1971 replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Well, tonight we're headed to dinner at my FIL's. I'm packing baked beans for all (mine are in a seperate container), and I'm taking a leftover hamburger patty/bun and fixins from Wed. to eat in place of grilled stuff they're making - along with fruit salad (found some great berries today!). And I made some great little flour less chocolate cupcakes today... -
ARCHIVED Toddler With Suspected Celiac
pricklypear1971 replied to Sesara's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
When I've heard about doctors considering a low normal iga suspicious its generally within 10% - which would be apx. 50 for their normal range. He's still higher than that, but not much. It would make me wonder, and request igg tests. -
ARCHIVED Toddler With Suspected Celiac
pricklypear1971 replied to Sesara's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Great job looking up all of that. His Celiac panel was not at all thorough. For a doctor that suspects Celiac, it should have been more thorough. And while his total iga was normal, it's low normal - in the area where some may say he's almost iga deficient - so iga Celiac tests wouldn't work for him. -
ARCHIVED Taste Of The Wild Recall
pricklypear1971 replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
FYI, according to Pet Club here in Tucson the affected facility was in the Carolina's - the food this Pet Club sells comes from CA and wasn't part of the recall. So, that explains why we aren't dead (since the dog spreads it all over the house and I'd tossed the bag). -

ARCHIVED Seasonal Allergies Better?!?!?
pricklypear1971 replied to BabsV's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes, when I got glutened in Dec. my allergies took a big dive - I was miserable and went back on Claritin (half dose every other day). It helped a lot. My doctor said its an immunosuppressant so that's probably one reason it helped so much....and the allergy part.... -
