  1. I have a reaction to mushrooms, but it's not a gluten reaction. I'm finding the my system doesn't react well to certain foods, especially those with histamine, so I attribute it to that, not any sort of gluten. The mushrooms give me a headache.

    ARCHIVED Dim Sum

I think Dim Sum is really a triple threat to the Celiac. First the dumpling part is made of wheat. Secondly, even if you can find some 100% rice dumplings, they're likely going to be fried in the same fryer as the wheat ones. Third, the soy sauce is very likely to have wheat, unless they carry tamari soy sauce. I adored Dim Sum prior to my diagnosis, but...
  3. The nausea pressure point is on your wrist. Hold the underside, where your veins are. Like you, I'll get nauseous but know I'm not going to throw up, so I'll hold the pressure point and it helps some. It's the same theory behind those motion sickness bands that they sell at the drug store. When I was pregnant, I spent about 3 months holding the pressure...
  4. Thanks. I love books but can't afford to buy them all the time, so I make good use of our local library, especially now that I can download e-books and audio books.
  5. Have to agree with this. I spoke to a nutritionist over the phone when I was first diagnosed and I knew more about what I could and couldn't eat than she did. She just referred me to a bunch of web sites. There are a ton of great gluten-free blogs out there with recipes and survival tips. If you have a question about whether something is gluten free...
  6. I've always been eaten alive by mosquito bites but one thing I've noticed since going gluten-free is that I'll be bitten one day and the actual bites won't show up for a day or two. We have a cabin we go to on Saturdays and I'll put on a ton of bug spray. Even still, I know they're biting me. But the actual bites won't show up or start itching until I...
  7. My son has light blue eyes and has a lot of problems with sunlight and glare. He's the "cool" 6 year old who is always wearing sunglasses Anyway, his eye doctor said for him it was a case of the black rim around this iris not being as deep as most people's are, which causes his issues with the sun. He said that was more common in people with blue eyes...
  8. I've never had a problem with Lays or Ruffles. In fact, I was eating Ruffles last night with no problems.
  9. It really depends on the situation and who I'm talking to as to how much detail I go in to. If it's a casual acquaintance, I'll just say "No thank you" when I'm offered stuff. If they keep insisting, I'll say I'm on a medically restricted diet or that I'm allergic. (Even though I'm not allergic, sometimes it's the easiest explanation.) If it's someone...
  10. After reading the song earlier in the post I keep getting Taylor Swift's We are Never Ever Getting Back Together running through my head but with new words: We will forever, ever be on this diet...
  11. I have a friend at church that is Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerant. She has been tested twice for Celiac and has come up negative both times. And her mother is a diagnosed Celiac, so her risk of having the disease is high. Despite two negative blood tests (after gluten challenges), she's decided she may not be officially at Celiac, but she cannot eat gluten...
  12. If it makes you feel any better, when I mentioned not eating gluten once, I had a nurse tell me, "Oh, I am so sick of hearing about that fad diet." I had to respond, "I have Celiac Disease and this is not a fad diet to me." You would think a nurse would understand a little better than the general public.
  13. I started to need cheaters before going gluten-free. But after starting on my gluten-free diet, I don't need them any more. My eye doctor said my near vision is 20/40. It's one of the perks of being gluten-free for me.
  14. Me too. In fact this is how I got my last glutening. I was out on our pontoon with DH and grabbed a bottle out of the cupholder, thinking it was my Angry Orchard when it was hubby's Abita. Luckily I realized after 1 sip but the damage was already done.
  15. I haven't been taking either probiotics or digestive enzymes. I'd love to hear some recommendations on those too.
  16. Thanks for the help everyone. And for not being scared off by my post Looks like I will be giving up the dairy. I've known for a while that I should but I think I've been resisting because my favorite foods all have dairy - chocolate, yogurt, cheese, etc. It's been much easier for me to give up the wheat than it will be to give up the dairy. Oh well...
  17. Sorry for handing out too much information here, but I really don't know who else to ask on this one. I'm recovering from my last glutening, which was about 4 weeks ago. One thing I've noticed late in my recovery cycle is that my stools get really crazy. The first week after being glutened I get the usual "Big D." Then the next week or two they're normal...
  18. My Kroger is kind of crazy - they'll have some brands of gluten-free flour sitting right next to the regular flour in the baking section and other brands are in the organic section. They have an aisle that says gluten free, and most of the products are but I've caught one on there that was made in a facility that also processes wheat. I don't consider that...
  19. When I make them at home they're just sugar, cinnamon and a little egg white. Could it be from some sort of cross contamination where someone touched gluten and then the pecans?
  20. Yeah, this is a frustration for me too. I've had two personal issues with this. We have a weekly dinner at church. The few times I go to it, I bring my own food. One person asked me why one night and I explained that I was eating gluten free. Another lady overheard and said, "I'm so sick of hearing people talk about eating gluten free. It's such a trendy...
  21. Yeah, when people say to me that they couldn't live without eating wheat I tell them I would rather be a Celiac without wheat than to have Lupus, which is where I was headed before going gluten free.
  22. Good point about the B vitamins. When I complained to my doctor about the problem she ran a full blood panel and noticed that my iron was low, as well as Vitamin D. Fixing those problems seemed to help too. OP - have you had blood work done lately? You might want to look for vitamin deficiencies. Correcting those may help without the need for mediciation...
  23. "I'm not an expert on liquor I barely know what half the things are in the store but the owner seemed to have a lot of gluten-free customers and said many report getting sick with certain wines or "wine like drinks" (he said anything made in a day and not aged isn't wine haha referring to my arbor mist question) and he saw some consistency in the complaints...
  24. Yes, the two are definitely linked - at least in my body. My worst symptom after being glutened is the lingering depression. When I first went gluten free it only lasted a week or two. Now, after two years of being gluten-free, I'm depressed for about 4-5 weeks afterward. I already take an anti-depressant (Prozac), so this is getting depressed despite...
  25. Just wanted to return and report on our trip to Krakow. I was a bit nervous because it's the first time I've travelled internationally since my diagnosis. I packed a bunch of food in my carry-on - Go Picnics, Jif-to-Go cups, rice crackers, Lays Stax. No one at security had any issues with it. We flew Lufthansa. I had pre-ordered gluten-free meals...
