  1. In my purse there's always Lara or Kind Bars. Also small packets of tamari soy sauce. At work I stash more bars, lays stax, Progresso Corn Chowder or Clam Chowder, Amy's gluten-free Frozen Entrees, Nutella (to spread on apples, or just eat by the spoonful!), and a box of Chex. At home I stash most of the above, plus hummus and carrots, and dried...
  2. Yeah, I was going to pack some GoPicnics and a bunch of Larabars and Kind Bars. Plus I was going to lurk on the "Favorite Emergency Food" thread to get some ideas of a few other things.
  3. Thanks IrishHeart, I just sent her a PM.
  4. Okay, now I don't feel so paranoid for wanting to get a doctor's note. Thanks for your help everyone. I'm going to call the doctor's office and get one just to have on-hand. Better safe than sorry.
  5. We are going to stay in Krakow and have been planning on going to the salt mines. My husband saw them last time he was there and said they were a must see. My must see thing is Auschwitz. Not a pleasant tour, but I feel compelled to see it, especially since we'll be so close. And I want to see the Schindler Museum. Other than that, I'm game for visiting...
  6. Hi all, I used to post here quite a bit but have been off the boards for a while. I have a question. I am leaving for Poland in about a month. It will be the first time I've travelled overseas since my diagnosis. I am flying Lufthansa and have ordered my gluten free meal. I also plan on packing some snacks to carry on the plane. Do you think I should...
  7. I second getting your ANA retested. My level was high at the beginning of last year. I went on the gluten free diet in July and was diagnosed in August. When my bloodwork was run again at the end of the year my levels had dropped within range. I'm not 100% sure it was because of the gluten-free diet, but I can't point to anything else that may have contributed...
  8. Thanks Lisa. I appreciate the help.
  9. The "you're too young for this" comments drive me crazy. A friend of mine's 15 year old son is sick with Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer. Usually only 60 year old men get this disease. But he still has it. So, what are the doctors going to say to him? "You can't have chemo because you're too young to get this disease." Luckily he has excellent, non-stupid...
  10. hexon - sorry you had to deal with him too. I'm searching for a good gi with Celiac experience to "have in my back pocket", so to speak. If you know of any good ones, please let me know. Didn't mean to hijack the thread
  11. Will your son eat soup? Progresso has a bunch of gluten-free soups that are labelled on either the front or back of the can. some of the ones I eat are the clam chowder (I think it's the New England - check because some versions of their chowder do have gluten), corn chowder, lentil and chicken and wild rice.
  12. Yes, please post any recommendations. I'll be headed to Spain in 2013 and would love the info too.
  13. I also like gluten free flour garden. As someone who works in marketing, I can see a lot of potential in that. You could even branch out into gluten free cookie bouquets.
  14. One time I went to Changs I had the same reaction to the broccoli beef. For me I didn't have any other symptoms of being glutened, so I really think it was something else in the dish I had a reaction to. We went there the other night and got a new server. She was very sweet and actually did know quite a bit about Celiac Disease. But something funny happened...
  15. Dr. Mary Margaret Hurley in Germantown is awesome. She really takes the time to listen. She will also order just about any test I request without giving me a hard time. She'll also test you for a lot more than just iron and Vitamin D. You do have to wait for her a bit sometimes because she does take the time with you. The other doctor in her group, Dr...
  16. Progresso has 2 soups that are gluten and dairy free - the lentil and I think the second one is chicken and rice. Just wanted to let you know that in case you decided to give up the dairy.
  17. I use Neutrogena Naturals face wash. It's available at most drug stores and is gluten free. Burts Bees lip shimmers are also gluten free (although not all BB products are. Their shampoos have gluten.) Blistex is gluten free. I also use Garnier hair gel. I can't remember the name but it says that it's made with 98% natural ingredients on the front....
  18. A lot of Celestial Seasonings teas are gluten free. They're very good about labeling their teas clearly.
  19. I totally agree. I actually usually tell people in restaurants, "I have Celiac Disease. I am severely allergic to wheat, barley, oats & rye and if I eat anything with those ingredients I will become very sick." Technically I know what I'm saying is wrong. I'm not allergic, and I can eat gluten free oats, but this seems the safest way to get my point...
  20. This is a tough one for me too. Hubby wanted to order Chinese last night and I told him I couldn't because I wouldn't risk eating anything. So I ended up eating leftover soup instead of beef with broccoli and eggrolls. I did eat at one local restaurant that had steamed veggies and meat and it was okay. I didn't get glutened. I had brought my own...
  21. One thing I do is keep a list of places I've eaten on my i-pad and what I ordered, so that I can know when I go back what to get and what to avoid. Of course, I have to check and make sure ingredients haven't changed since the last time I ate there, but the list helps me remember what's worked for me in the past. Yesterday I went to eat at a local restaurant...
  22. I hate to get too personal, but could it be your age? When after we turned 40, both my husband and I noticed a big deterioration in our vision. My eye doctor said it was very common around that age, which is when a lot of people start needing reading glasses. But I have noticed that my vision has improved since going gluten free and I don't need...
  23. I'm sort of self-diagnosed. I tested positive on the bloodwork but negative on the biopsy. But my biopsy was flawed because I hadn't been eating gluten 6 weeks prior (and because my doctor was an arrogant twit...but that's a whole other story). My GI said I wasn't a Celiac because of the biopsy & coloscopy, but I say I am because of my bloodwork and...
  24. The recipes don't contain any rye or seminola. And they don't mention anything about Celiac Disease or the gluten free diet. My concern is that both the seminola and rye are specifically listed under the heading "Gluten Free Ingredients" and they're not gluten free. So I consider the information to be misleading. There was a section before the gluten...
  25. Don't forget to make sure your supplements are gluten free.
