  1. I really liked this book too. It's a good book for coping with a diagnosis and the next steps to take. I just finished reading "Healthier without Wheat" by Stephen Wagnen. He covers both Celiac and NCGI in the book. He describes a lot of the medical issues but in laymen's terms. I liked that he acknowledged a lot of the NCGI issues as well as the actual...
  2. I think Candy Corn is gluten free itself, but watch for shared facilities. I was looking at some Brach's candy corn at Halloween and it was processed in a facility that also processed wheat. As for going dairy free, I feel your pain. I think that's harder for me to give up than the gluten. I love cheese. I've been doing "dairy light" recently in preparation...
  3. I think sometimes there is a lack of communication between the kitchen staff and wait staff that contributes to the problem too. And even between management and the staff. We went to one of my favorite local chains for a hamburger a couple of weeks ago because a friend of mine saw on Facebook that they were doing gluten free burgers now. When we got to...
  4. Actually I was going to mention the iron too. I had bad problems with fatigue and the doctor tested my iron and vitamin D levels. I was deficient in both. Supplementing has really helped me get my energy back.
  5. Hang in there. It gets easier over time. And you have a great resource in everyone in this board.
  6. I'd get a new doctor asap. Yours gave you some bad advice. If you truly do have Celiac Disease and continue eating gluten, you're setting yourself up to be at risk for a whole host of autoimmune disorders in the future. Tons of people on this board are dealing with Hashimoto's Disease, Graves Disease, Fibromyalgia, Diabetes etc. as a result of not being...
  7. My dermatologist told me to use Cetaphil a.m. as a moisturizer but when I found out it has gluten, I told him I couldn't use it. He recommended Cerave a.m. moisturizer. I called them a couple of weeks ago and they confirmed they were gluten free. I've been using it for a couple of weeks and haven't had any problems.
  8. I'd add depression, brain fog, fatigue, apathy and hair loss.
  9. I totally agree. My GI was an arrogant idiot more interested in taking my money than helping me. I told him during our initial appointment that I hadn't been eating gluten for 4 weeks. He still ordered a colonoscopy, endoscopy, and biopsy. At that point I hadn't found all the intelligent people on this board who would tell me that it wouldn't do any good...
  10. Blistex is gluten-free. I called the company to ask a couple of months ago.
  11. That's pretty bad. If you're going to get glutened it should at least be by something that tastes good.
  12. I remember reading somewhere (probably on this board) that there are about 200 different symptoms associated with Celiac Disease and Gluten Intolerance. And some people don't have any symptoms at all. They're called "Silent Celiacs." So it's definitely possible for you to have gluten issues.
  13. I'm so sorry you feel attacked. Please don't leave the board because there are really a lot of smart people here with useful info. I don't know about Blue Bell ice cream, but I've been gluten free about the same time as you - 4 months. And I'm still having some crazy reactions. A couple of weeks ago I got violently ill after eating skittles and drinking...
  14. Be patient. The hair takes a while to grow back. I can tell you that one from personal experience
  15. Katrala, I apologize for my typo. Usually I'm a better speller than that and I certainly didn't mean to offend anyone with Asperger's Syndrome or Autism. My point with the comparison is that at this time Asperger's is considered part of a spectrum of Autism, which acknowledges that there are people with varying degrees of issues, from mild symptoms that...
  16. You also have to be careful about if the chicken is marinated in anything, like soy sauce. Many marinades and sauces contain gluten.
  17. I've been on anti-depressants for years, long before I found out about the gluten intolerance. For me I still get the symptoms of depression, especially if I've been glutened. The anti-depressants don't stop it totally. What they do help with is my coping skills. My episodes aren't as bad and don't last as long. My moods are more even. I still get angry...
  18. That would be a depressing thought - having to give up good cider on tap. I agree with kareng, see if they'll serve it in a (gasp) carry out cup. Either that or go for the bottled, if they have it. And once you figure it out, drink one for me I miss my good cider. The only thing you can find in my city is Woodchuck. If I'm lucky, I'll occasionally...
  19. Chick fil a is another good alternative to KFC. They use dedicated fryers for their french fries and offer grilled chicken. I usually get their chargrilled chicken salad. Also, Hardees offers a low carb thickburger that comes on two slices of lettuce instead of a bun. But their fries are a no no.
  20. I haven't bought a whole lot of gluten-free products, but here are the ones I like: My Yay Products: Rice and Corn Chex - Love eating real cereal at real prices King Arthur gluten-free flour mix Lays Stax - Again eating sorta real food at real prices Betty Crocker gluten-free Chocolate Chip and Cake Mixes - I had a anaphylatic reaction (not gluten...
  21. You can use it in with any kind of sauce. There are quite a few jarred spaghetti sauces that are gluten-free. I bought some Prego, I think, that says gluten-free on the label. I also like flaked quinoa in place of oatmeal for breakfast. And I'll cook the whole quinoa in my rice cooker occasionally and use it in place of regular rice but I agree with...
  22. I feel your pain. My best friend has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and also has thyroid issues. She's always exhausted and her muscles constantly ache. She has poor memory and brain fog. Plus, I believe she has gluten ataxia. And she's had gastro problems for years related to panic attacks. In short, she has a lot of symptoms of a classic Celiac...
  23. I disagree with this. Personally, I think Celiac Disease is one part of Gluten Intolerance spectrum. To use an analogy, I think it compares to Asberger's Disease being part of the Autism spectrum. It frustrates me that doctors don't take Celiac Disease seriously, and they don't even begin to have a clue about gluten intolerance, which is just as serious...
  24. That's just crazy. The endocsopy costs way more. The blood test is as simple as having a lab tech draw blood and send it off. Mine was done in my GP's office. The endoscopy requires you to go to a hospital or an outpatient facility, have anesthesia, and at least one nurse as well as the GI doctor present. I just had all this done in August/September...
  25. I'm so sorry your mom doesn't understand. Have you explained to her that you'll be sick for more than a day if you eat gluten? Explain exactly what happens, in all the gory detail. Tell her how long it takes you to recover. Maybe she'll get the point then. You also might want to mention to her that by eating gluten both you and your sister are putting...
