  1. That sounds so yummy! The only 3 fats I use to cook with are butter, olive oil and lard. (I only use lard for pie crusts but you can't beat the porky crunch and I still get a good flake even gluten free.) I think next time I go though I'll leave him home so I can spend more time browsing. We don't have any Trader Joes here, but that's fine by me. With Costco...
  2. I don't have any issues with my usual brands, the big one being Ben & Jerry's. Their website (if I remember correctly) says that while they don't have a list of gluten free flavors they will clearly list allergens on the labels. I haven't had any reactions to it yet. I do specifically remember though that they said ingredients will change occasionally...
  3. I suppose I should have shared what works for me to help me get through the first day or two. (Which is particularly on my mind this morning since I got to wake up in the wee hours of the morning feeling sort of like a gutted fish.) While I've cut back on my dairy intake significantly, I've found that milk helps a lot. I probably drink about a gallon over...
  4. It's only been 5 months gluten free for me so I doubt I have any useful insight. I was diagnosed with endometriosis 13 years ago although I'm certain that it had a serious impact on me since my early teens. Since going gluten free in January I haven't had any relief of my symptoms associated with my period. As a matter of fact I'd say it's worse, even if...
  5. I do take CC seriously although unlike you I react quickly and violently when it happens. Eating out is a risk, every time and I simply accept that risk. I've found that it's "safe" for me to go to Wendy's for fries, frostys and chicken salads. I go about twice a month and haven't had any issues yet. Honestly though, I don't go anywhere near places that don...
  6. I finally talked (nagged) my husband into a Costco membership and picked up a 3 pound bag of fresh spinach. I'm not sure what I'll have with it but I'm definitely having a huge bowl of fried spinach. And tomorrow. And the next day.
  7. The cutting boards will need to be replaced. Plastic ones are fine to use, but since they get scored when you use them you'll want to keep gluten and gluten free ones separate. I wouldn't be afraid to keep and use any undamaged plastic, especially if it is Tupperware. I won't use what anyone else in my house uses though because they microwave in the containers...
  8. It doesn't seem far fetched for it to be diet related since it happened after a diet change. Maybe it's not, but hey sometimes all we can do is shoot in the dark. Sometimes finding a way to laugh at something that isn't actually funny helps me get perspective or just plain feel better. If it helps you de-stress, just imagine how many shades of red he...
  9. I think we'd all be at her house for dinner every night!
  10. I have always had success with ginger ale (a good brand, not cheap crap) and bitters over ice. It usually calms my stomach enough to get a little something in me. Since discovering cream of rice cereal I find that is a great go-to if I don't feel well enough to eat. It hardly comes any more mild than that. I keep a few containers of baby food applesauce on...
  11. I noticed after about a month that my GI symptoms had more or less cleared up. I also realized I could think again. I never told my doctor that I felt like the whole world was surreal or that I felt detatched from it because I didn't want to end up in a psych ward somewhere. Anyway, that's what got better. I have noticed as time goes on I have more days...
  12. I live minutes away from New Grains and 3 weeks from today, can go vote to determine whether or not Hatch should be the next Republican candidate for senator or if he should be replaced so this is a story that certainly hits home for me on more than just the celiac issue. Congress as a whole isn't doing enough, if anything but singling out one guy over the...
  13. Not a conversation I could picture having with my dad. On the other hand, I could totally talk to my mom about it. Is that an option? Depends on the relationship there I guess, for some people it would still be really weird.
  14. I don't use handsoap because I have long had reactions to some dyes and perfumes. Instead I simply wash my hands without using soap and follow up with sanitizer. I'll share a link I found about it, but basically if it's only germs an not dirt to worry about you're probably safer with sanitizer. (Because morning talk/news shows are super scientific.) Open...
  15. This made me laugh. I'm not normal for a whole lot of reasons, but this isn't one I'd considered. Although I have been known to throw out the occasional very sarcasitc and biting "I'm special" in regards to my health issues which now includes celiac. It's hard to be different, and that part of this hasn't gotten easier with time. As a matter of fact...
  16. There are (in theory) big changes coming with the next income tax filing season. As of the most recent though, we sort of get a tax break. If your medical expenses exceed 7.5% of your income you can deduct the portion that exceeds that amount by itemizing. (So if your income is $100,000 you can't deduct the first $7500 but everything over that can be deducted...

    ARCHIVED Periods

If you are sharing peanut butter or jam with someone who is a gluten eater, or if they are leftover from your gluten filled days it is quite possible they have crumbs in them. I for one can not resist the temptation to double dip.
  18. I know that this is old, but since it was brought up here I'll post here. I was intrigued by the idea that Cheetos are all made without gluten but only certain ones are gluten free. I jumped over to their website and saw this confirmed. In the listing, all are listed as "made without gluten ingredients" but only the naturals ones are "gluten free." This led...

    ARCHIVED Periods

After going gluten free my periods have stopped being regular. Until I changed my diet I could predict the timing within hours every month. Now it's every 2 1/2 to 5 weeks which is driving me up a wall. They're still as awful as they always were but nowhere as bad as yours. I don't really have any advice, just a sympathetic shoulder to cry on and to let you...
  20. I can also say the cravings aren't so bad after a while. I got a phone call about a week after having emergency surgery to have my gallbladder removed, which also involved an endoscopy. Happy as a clam on a Friday afternoon some girl says to me "we got your biopsy results back, it was positive for celiac." I was like biopsy? celiac? What the hell is going...
  21. It's possible that since it's been such a short time that a blood test would come up positive, and some doctors may confirm with that. A negative though means nothing, many people (including me) come up false negative. Since you feel better gluten free your doctor should consider that evidence, but clearly has no interest in doing so. A different doctor may...
  22. I guess I just sort of assumed it was gluten free breaded fish if there was confusion about where the gluten came from. But yes, if it was not gluten free it is almost certainly the fish making you sick. (My husband found and brought me some packaged breaded fish that is gluten free, so it is out there.)
  23. I know this isn't what you want to hear, but throw that organic/natural idea right out the window. It just isn't happening on a budget. Buying things like pre-packaged mashed potatoes will be a drain you don't need on your budget. I pick up 10 pound bags of potatoes for $2.59 and I imagine you can probably find a similarly low price. For fruits and veggies...
  24. I immediately stopped all use of cast iron pans with my diagnosis. The whole point of cast iron is that the pan becomes seasoned and it's entirely possible that it was a source of cc for you. Then again, it's also perfectly likely that it was a reaction to some other food.
  25. I think I'll come to your house for dinner. Sounds like breakfast and dessert all wrapped up in one.
