  1. Hi Mark, welcome to the forum! If you're not absolutely 100% gluten free, and you happen to NOT get any better - you still won't know. So I'd say it's better to go all the way, give it your best shot, and see what happens. Convincing others isn't really a problem if you're convinced yourself. How to convince yourself... I guess it might come...
  2. Six months? Yikes. Thanks for the encouragement though. I don't really eat a lot of sweets really, but I love raisins and dates and fruit in general. Hopefully that is something I can add back in after a while. Munching on some celery Pauliina
  3. I put this in "coping..." because I really just need some encouragement. I have a yeast infection that won't go away, white coating on my tongue, and anything with sugar will give me horrible stomach rumbles, gas and bloating. Yippee! Anyway, I don't really need advice, just a little sympathy would be nice. I've been completely sugar free...
  4. I've never heard anyone over here claiming that a regular beer like Amstel would be gluten free. That's really odd. Pauliina
  5. You don't seem to eat a lot of vegetables, is there a reason for that? It's the easiest way to get a lot of variety in your diet, veggies are gluten and milk free and won't mess up your blood sugar. I usually eat veg & meat or fish for both lunch and dinner - don't even feel the need for a snack. Pauliina
  6. The tips of the vili don't absorb lactose - they make an enzyme that breaks the lactose into more simple sugars that are absorbable. So I could imagine (this is just my theory though) that even if there wasn't major damage, it could be that the vili had stopped making the enzyme. And now that they aren't bothered by evil gluten anymore, they have started...
  7. It could something else of course, but that could also just be a tightness somewhere along the line that runs from the front of the shoulder and along the inside of the arm. A tight muscle that blocks a nerve or bloodflow could give you a numb finger. How does it feel if you stretch your arm out to the side, completely horizontal, and a bit back? You...
  8. Are you taking B vitamins? That is the main thing that helps me with gluten depression - I'm not depressed other than when I'm glutened, so I'm not on any medication. When I get glutened I take a vit. B complex, a fairly big dose, and it really really helps. Pauliina
  9. I just wanted to add that I really don't think it's as bad as the author makes it seem! It's just like anywhere - you need to know the labeling laws and you need to do your research. When a manufacturer uses wheat derived ingredients that are "gluten free", yes they can call the product gluten free but they ALSO have to say on the label it contains wheat...
  10. Armettta is right. You need to keep eating gluten to be tested. But I also wanted to add that an elimination diet is also a diagnostic tool if you go about it in a methodical way. So don't discount your diet experiments. Did you notice anything different while being gluten free, versus being dairy free, etc.? You could think of keeping a food journal where...
  11. You could consider gene testing to see what kind of combination of genes you and your family has. It might be that your of a type that doesn't get "classic" celiac. There's growing recognition that there are other kinds of gluten intolerances, they just haven't been reseached enough yet. Bottom line is anyway that you know that you need to be on the...
  12. Just a thought but could the original poster mean they had a blood test GENE test? That one would always be positive for a celiac gene even if you hadn't developed celiac. To the original poster: celiac doesn't happen overnight. It developes. So yes, it could be that first you have an inconclusive biopsy where nothing much is to be seen, and a few...
  13. That describes me, exactly! I'm happy to be self-employed so I can set my own hours, I never make appointments before noon if I can help it. Interestingly, whenever I get a really good stretch of time without glutenings, meaning I'm feeling my healthiest and best, I only need six-seven hours of sleep, I sleep like a log (not a baby!) and wake up without...
  14. Sorry you got glutened Nini! Hope you feel better sooner rather than later... Pauliina

    ARCHIVED Help!

Welcome! Glucose syrup can be made of wheat, and it's a kind of tricky question. In theory there's no gluten left in it after the way it's made, and many celiacs can tolerate it, but then again, many don't (like me for instance). I'd say avoid it until you are more familiar with the diet, do some research and reading for yourself and make an...
  16. I had just read you post about the job offer, Lynne, before leaving for the dojo, and I just had to do something! It was a very special evening. I'm a bit sore today, but thankful that I'm sore, you know? Pauliina
  17. I'm lucky to be able to train hard again, and I realize that can be painful to read about. But tonight's training was dedicated to all of you who cannot do the things they want anymore. So one of the things I do is aikido. The founder of aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, passed away on April 26th in 1969, and many aikido clubs do a special training session on...
  18. ...and in Europe, it might or it might not be, so you need to check, or if not sure, avoid it. Just thought I'd add that in case people come over on holidays... Pauliina

  20. I don't know if you guys would have the nerve to whip out a jar of baby food in front of other people, but that's what i sometimes pack for lunch... Not that I'm college anymore, but sometimes i have long days . Pauliina
  21. My husband wipes his mouth well after eating anyway, and I don't dare to kiss him right after a meal, but about an hour after usually. So far, no accidents. If he rinses his mouth with water it's ok, at least in our experience. Caveat: For really passionate eating up of each other I do require brushing of teeth. But for just a little kiss mouth closed the...
  22. I'm glad you had some good news about your grandpa. I'll keep you and your family in my thoughts. It seems to me that an awful lot of people have written here about first feeling much better and then having a downswing again after two-three months into the diet. Hopefully you'll swing back up again after a while. Pauliina
  23. I get the depression, too, and it's definitely more than a feeling of frustration about being glutened, because often the depression or irritability hits before I know I've been glutened, it's often my first symptom! And B vit. helps me, too. Although lately I've been getting it in the form of smoked salmon&green veg. instead of a pill, when I get glutened...
  24. A friend of mine swears by dipping a tampon in the yoghurt and inserting it as a means of getting the yoghurt where it needs to go... Pauliina
  25. Well you can always try the gluten free diet and see how you feel. You don't need a doctors prescription to eat gluten free you know. If you decide to try it, make sure you are completely gluten free for a significant time (several months) before you decide it isn't working for you. People don't always feel better immediately on the diet, it can take some...
