ARCHIVED Celiacs Disease And A Freshman In College
happygirl replied to morrisgirl's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Morrisgirl, I'm no longer a teenager, I'm in my mid twenties, but I wanted to welcome you to the board! I was in graduate school when I was diagnosed, so I can "somewhat" relate. Celiac (without a "s") Disease is being recognized more and more, so maybe there are some other students with Celiac at your school. Might be worth asking a dietician... -
ARCHIVED Easy Meals To Be Frozen
happygirl replied to es2443's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I freeze any and all foods---pretty much anything normal that you can think of!! -
ARCHIVED Outback Steakhouse Or Applebee's
happygirl replied to angel-jd1's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Jessica, I sure hope someone posts----they sound delicious! I used to work at Applebee's, and they were made from scratch, which is rare for them (they would come in early and do the prep...peeling about a million potatoes!) But I never made them myself L -
After being glutened by them every time, I gave them up! Too high of a risk for cross contamination for me, apparently.

ARCHIVED Struggling For A Diagnosis
happygirl replied to aussiegirl17's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Aussiegirl, Unforunately, your story is all too common. Experiences like yours have brought so many to this board---because they received incorrect medical advice, wrong testing/procedures, and neglect. I am sorry that you had to go through all of that---it is so frustrating. Your doctor was correct in telling you to eat gluten for an extended amount... -
Bev, Your doc is correct....from what I know at least! You can have high levels of IgG that can cause problems, or it can go back over to IgMs, meaning current infection. But very high IgGs can cause problems (it apparently, is one of mine) by being somewhat "heightened" versus being fully re-activated (IgM). (Can you tell I'm in the middle of this?!...

ARCHIVED I Think We Are Missing Something
happygirl replied to bassgirls's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yes, you can be allergic to wheat and have Celiac. Electra-by definition, if she has DH, she HAS Celiac. -
I never got better after mono...I believe it 'triggered' my Celiac/Celiac symptoms. CMV is cytomeglavirus. It can also be a cause of mono. I was lucky enough to have both EBV and CMV. Same thing with the IgM and IgG.

ARCHIVED Celiac's & Type I Diabetes
happygirl replied to Peacock93's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Nanc, Welcome to the board! I am happy you have found us. This board is a great resource and full of a lot of information and support. In general---its hard to say how long it takes. Some people see an immediate difference (less bathroom problems) but it takes them awhile to regain their full health back. Others don't see any differences for awhile... -
ARCHIVED Colonoscopy Vs. Endoscopy?
happygirl replied to GeoffCJ's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
An endoscopy goes PAST the stomach. It goes into the small intestine, which is why it is used to take biopsies for Celiac. A colonoscopy is great to check for other things: Crohn's, Ulcerative colitis, microscopic colitis, cancer/polyps, etc. but it is not the appropriate test for Celiac. -
Bev, I have struggled with mono/EBV issues since before my celiac disease dx. Do you have a copy of your test results? They should have run the IgM and IgG for EBV, and, potentially, CMV (which can also be involved in mono). If your IgM is positive, that is an indicator that you have a current active infection. Once you have had EBV/mono, you will always...

ARCHIVED Think Good Thoughts For Jereseyangel (patti)
happygirl replied to Mtndog's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Because Patti has so many food sensitivities, she made all of her own food and froze it, to have it ready for the hospital stay. She didn't trust the hospital, as it is hard to avoid all that she is currently avoiding. So in terms of food-she should be ok!!!! -

ARCHIVED "this Product Was Processed In A Facility That Processes Wheat"
happygirl replied to AliceW's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Alice, I think its a combination of the CYA (we have actually had this convo before, so I know there are many who agree with that) and the fact that it really could be an issue. I am an extremely sensitive Celiac, and I am notorious for reacting to things when others haven't In my 2.5 years of eating gluten free, I only know of two products that... -
Wow, elonwy, thank you for sharing! It is encouraging to read a post like yours. Sometimes it can be hard to be gluten free, and your post I think lifts ALL of our spirits that there are kind people like that out there. Plus, the fact that he is fond of you makes us like him even more :) Having that support and true concern makes a world of difference...

ARCHIVED Is Sushi Rice Gluten Free?
happygirl replied to Anonymousgurl's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
peace- distilled vinegar, apple cider vinegar, etc is safe. it is usually only malt vinegar, and like Tiffany mentioned, lower quality balsamic or flavored vinegars that aren't. but white vinegar, and rice vinegar, are safe, and the American Dietetic Association has stated so. Laura -

ARCHIVED Not Diagnosed By Doctor; But On Diet Anyway...
happygirl replied to betterbelly's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Welcome to the board! We are happy to have you here! It is perfectly safe to not eat gluten. Don't worry I had some issues with my testing. A doctor and I went head to head on it. He wanted to put me back on gluten (and I react violently and honestly would rather be tortured for 3 months than eat gluten!) and when it came down to it, he admitted... -
ARCHIVED Biopsy And Blood Tests Results On 22 Month Old
happygirl replied to sadiesmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Amy, the tTG test is usually the most indicative of Celiac. However, the fact that your daughter has symptoms and one positive blood test is highly indicative of a problem with gluten. In general, blood testing with young children for Celiac is not very accurate, so I don't think you can necessarily rule it out if its negative. I had the same problem... -
Matt, Check out the book that I have listed in my signature. You can get it from any large book store chain, online or they can order it. It is written by one of the most respected Celiac physicians AND researchers (important to me!) from Columbia University. First, it is just a great book. Second, it has a whole section about what to do when you aren...

ARCHIVED Mayonaise And Ketchup
happygirl replied to Daisy Duke's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Lisa, I will do that! I find it frustrating when companies are apparently trying to do well....but do more harm than good. Their information flies in the face of the American Dietetic Association, all of the Celiac awareness groups, and nutritionists, dieticians, Celiac authors, food labeling laws, .... the list goes on and on, hence my concern . Although...
